Nokia Lumia 730

A die-hard Android user myself but I just had to try this Windows Phone thing. A few irritations I found on the 630 (not sure if all issues will be the same on the 730 as most are WP 8.1 related I think)

  1. Phone doesn't get time from network, need to set it manually. Internet and all internet related services doesn't work if time or date is wrong.
  2. Why the hell is the All Settings menu non-alphabetical? Bloody ridiculous!
  3. IE is the default browser and you cannot change it. IE works well but doesn't feature background tabs which sucks donkeyballs. UC Browser is OK but I stupidly removed my SD card where it was installed before uninstalling the app, I'm now battling to re-install it. Surfy is OK but you have a limited amount of tabs you can have open. Opera doesn't work half the time.
  4. There should be more volume settings, ideally splitting the current Ringer + Notifications & Media + Apps into 4 separate ones (at the very least split Media + Apps)
  5. The phone itself operates smooth as silk but it does slow down on the odd occasion (slow to respond). I'm sure the 730 with double the amount of RAM should be sharp(ish).

Will probably find a few more quirks shortly

I think all Android users (present company included) are suckers for punishment... and yes, this includes the need to try other OSes when we are perfectly happy with Android. :p
  1. Phone gets time from network. I never set the time on the 730.
  2. Um, yeah. :/
  3. I have UC on here, but most browsing is done via links (twitter, tapatalk, email etc.). Doesn't help.
  4. I'm okay with the volume setup, so I would call this as subjective.
  5. Yup, I have a friend that has an older WP7 phone with 512MB RAM. I made sure to buy a phone with 1GB.

Something that I will blog about later (about lunch time) is the rather inconsistent back vs home button action. It depends on the app, of course, but the resuming app sometimes resumes at the last point, and sometimes appears to refresh from go. Minor issue, and one I am learning to work around.

It made perfect sense in the days of yore (windows phone 7). The settings list was shorter and everything was listed from most used to least used. With newer versions, it got longer, and longer and longer until it became the ridiculous mess it is now. Thankfully with Windows 10 things are categorised (not in alphabetical order though)

Yeah but the next update coming out for win8.1phone has the settings listed alphabetically.

GDR2? Says who? That update may have been cancelled along with McLaren. So they'll have a preview out for Windows 10 for phone before a 8.1.2 preview?

Was wondering what happened to you yesterday as there was no update. I now see why ... you were too busy having fun on a Windows Phone. Who knew? :-)

BTW, have you installed the Windows Central app? It's a must have, packed with articles for newbies and experienced Windows Phone users alike: http://www.windowsphone.com/en-za/store/app/windows-central/e6c3c78a-4382-e011-986b-78e7d1fa76f8 (Also available on Android!)

Yep, been an avid follower of all the Mobile Nations sites, installed the app in the first 2 days. :)

Well, it's decided. I'm sticking with the 730. Stunning display (with the deepest blacks), one-handed usability, an OS that just works (and flows), and apps that have a certain consistency about them.

My daughter will be very happy to hear this. (She gets to keep using the G2)

I got myself a 930 this weekend. So far loving it. And it's beating the 730 in battery time. Other wise the 730 is keeping pace. Sad thing happened, the fiance dropped her 730 on tar road. Screen got cracked. So now I am thinking of possibly replacing the screen... it's not too bad though.

Nice. Where did you get it? I've been struggling to get one from Cell C.

I'm a client with both Cellc and MTN. Told MTN that I I wanted to end my contract. So they gave me a cut. I'm quite happy with the end price.

Couple of things to take note though, phone is larger (obviously) and very heavy. It is probably the heaviest phone I have ever owned... Thicker as well. But man is it nice to hold. And just like the 730 it works. It's still on the Cyan update though. I ma considering flashing a different rom on it as a test... Not quite sure yet.

Screens are about the same when it comes to clarity and whites. The 730 looked better out of the box with whites. But luckily you can adjust colors. So now they look almost identical. I've tested speed side by side. And while the 930 is clearly faster, it's not like it makes a huge difference. Windows rarely seems to use more than 900mb of memory at a time, which is amazing.

And here I am wanting less settings for volumes.

Put them all in one and give me a simple mute/silent option for the ringer separately and I'm golden.

With the two options now I always end up having to adjust both.

I have said this before, If more fandroids actually give WP a go, Android will no longer be the dominating mobile OS, WP is sitting with something like 3% of the entire mobile market, and look at what they have achieved, If this rises to 20 - 30%, the possibility for the OS is endless.
Android which is the biggest Mobile OS, is the buggiest, slowest, worst optimized piece of crap I have ever worked on. The only reason they remain on their pedestal is because of fandroids telling everyone how fantastic android is, not knowing there is a whole other (better) world out there.
If Android does not pull up their socks, start optimizing the OS, WP will surpass them in due time, leaving Android where BB is now, trust is a easy thing to loose and a very hard thing to win back.

Pretty much yeah. I've been wanting to switch to WP for a long time. Have not regretted it yet.
Anybody know of an app I can use on WP to use as a substitute for my slack web app?

I dunno if Android will lose to WP - but with the new licensing for WP that will hopefully help things along. Look at Blackberry though - they have a great OS, but nobody is interested. If Windows 10 doesn't do it off the bat, WP could go the same way as BB.

Im sure they will lose, Its 2015 and its still a crappy OS, WP runs better on a much much more basic device. That to me is just not acceptable.
I originally thought Samsung was buying BB to get their hands on BB OS, When Samsung brings out devices with WP, that would also be a huge knock to android.
