Nokia N82 or Samsung Omnia

Nice cover, better than anything one could use on the N95. I've had issues with every cover I've bought for my N95. Not easy to poach a slide open handset... but what you got there is going to serve you well...
 
Is the screen protected/covered? I can' tell from the pic of the front of your silicon coated N82 :p

I have left the cover that came on the screen but that silicon cover also has a hard plastic cover with cushioned edges that fits over the screen. So in that picture the screen itself is two layers down! :) I'll see how long that lasts... the silicon cover also protects the camera lens as the silver part around the lens seems like it would usually sit on things when the phone is put down but with the silicon cover on it will take the "impact" and not the lens slider etc. I like it... feels cool on the hand too. Remember I out it on straight away so have no idea what the phone feels like without it! ha ha
 
Oh, I'm so jealous! I really like my Omnia, but I guess I wish I could have both :)

I am still loving discovering new things on the Omnia - and the novelty has not worn off. I just tested my battery life and it lasts almost a full 3 days - with playing with it a lot.

I guess you win some and you loose some, hey? Can't have it all :)

Please post more reply's as you're playing with ur "toy". I'd love to hear more about it :)
 
Well some further comments then :)

Firstly, I have been in the process of loading the applications I found useful on my N95 onto my N82. I have been thinking about this and I actually see it as a big plus. Yes, I don't have the fun and novelty of "discovering" new things as the interface is familiar to me but I do have the foresight of knowing what works and what doesn't. All those apps that were actually just for showing off (think light saber, pyPiwo etc) will not be making their way onto my new phone.

RAM - It was something I was aware of but it has really struck me now that I am using the N82 how much more RAM it has compared to the N95. I was forever using handy task man to close apps to free up RAM on the N95 as it often got down to 10Mb but now I loaded Handy Taskman, had a look and I have 90.5Mb of free RAM!

Garmin - Well even though I have 2 year Nokia Maps navigation included, I have become used to the directions given by Garmin so I loaded it. I will still use Nokia maps properly later but I wanted to compare Garmin on this phone to the N95. I had heard grumblings of it not being as useful as the screen was smaller etc etc. Bottom line is that is cr_p! :) Because of the same resolution on the smaller screen Garmin is absolutely crystal clear on the N82 screen and I had no problem seeing it properly in the usual position I placed my N95.

Speed - I know I do not have as many apps loaded yet but I am aware of how much quicker everything seems to happen on the N82. Let's see if it stays this way once I load more and more apps

By the way, definitely do not be put off by the N82s looks... I have been checking it out often and I really cannot see what the big deal is and why people call it ugly! Yes, I do have the silicon cover on but it looks like a phone... not sure when the change came about but it seems to be a sin for a phone to look like a phone nowadays! :) The N82 also feels real good in your hand with the silicon cover on.
 
There's an application called PanoMan which is included with the phone. It has a picture of an anime-looking character so I never bothered opening it because I thought it was some retarded game.

But the other day I figured I may as well see what it is and I was pleasantly surprised! It's actually an application that allows you to take a 360 degree panorama picture!

I've been playing with it quite a bit, but I was a bit confused initially because it kept taking these reference pictures - I thought that these pictures put together would form the final image. But all you have to actually do is move the camera around slowly and it will automatically update the image and take reference pictures if necessary.

With regard to that silicon cover, I'm impressed. It looks great on your phone. :(

I'm frowning because my black N82 looks hot without the cover, but as soon as I put the cover on, it looks... off. *sniffle*

Most covers don't really compliment phones all that much, some do more than others. Remember manufacturers place huge emphasis on ergonomics and aesthetics of their respective hand sets so throwing on a R60 plastic cover isn't going to do the product much justice but I think having a clean phone after a year or 2 of use makes pouching them all the more viable...
 
Sandman, I am in 100% agreement with you on that one. It is the trade off between keeping your phone in good condition and having it look like the manufacturer intended. I have to admit the N82 being candy bar does make it easier to find a cover that compliments it. It is the first time i have used these silicon covers and I have to say I am very impressed. Not quite R60 but R150 is acceptable. I do not doubt that after a while it will look a little grubby but I do not have a problem with buying a new one every six months or so.


Further updates after two days of use.... Guys, do not be fooled into steering clear of this phone because of the "smaller" screen (and i put that in inverted commas as 2.4" is still by no means small!) it is fine (I was going to say perfect but that is a relative term. 22" would be perfect but by no means sensible on a cell phone! :)). I loaded the MobiTubia app yesterday and spent the evening in bed watching surfing videos from youtube on it, and I had absolutely no issues with the screen being too small! As stated before the same number of pixels crammed into the smaller screen makes the picture crystal clear and the speakers on one side means no blocking them when the phone is resting on my chest!

I am not even going to rave about the flash any more as I think we all know that this is superb! So if I am quiet about the camera just accept that I do not feel the need to punt the virtues of it anymore. :)

Let me look for something to complain about so that I do not come across as a fan boy! ha ha. The numbered keys are really not an issue. I am by no means a big typer of sms's, notes etc but it serves my purpose fine. Somebody who types a lot would probably prefer a keyboard though. Oops, sorry still no complaint. Ok, at a push I'd say perhaps the edges of the d-pad for controlling directional presses could be a little bigger. I tend to find myself using the tip of my thumb to control it properly and not press the centre pad. But in saying this I have played games on it already and have only on one occasion fired when I was wanting to turn right! Now bear in mind on my N95 I used to always end up pressing the multimedia menu key and opening that mid game, so the odd stray bullet is actually an improvement! :)

Sorry Ryan.... not making your choice any easier! :) Feel free to ask about concerns and I'll give my hands on view. There is enough of a Symbian fan base out there already so I feel no need to recruit new members like some phone owners, so hopefully you will get a non biased view from me!

Actually, that's one advantage of the black. They raised the edges (or indented the centre button?) on the D-pad, so that it can be used pretty much as a joystick. :) There's only one cover though, and it's shaped for the silver version, so any advantage thereof is negated while using the Capdase cover.
 
N82, or any Symbian owners, have a look at SkyeQuiKey! I just loaded this and it makes life so easy... and for those that moan about the accessibility of applications with Symbian, check it out too.

From the standby screen, press the numbers on the keypad that correspond to the letters (no need to press three times for "C", just press it once) of the application or contact you are looking for. As you press the keys the app brings up all the contacts, apps etc that have those letters in them... usually within three key presses the option you are after will be shown and then launch it or phone it as you desire! :)

How easily does the N82 sync with MS Outlook i.t.o. calendar, tasks, emails, etc... I can't remember if this has been discussed in this thread or if a review has perhaps covered this already.
 
Well PC Suite has a Sync function which is described as "Sync calender items, contacts, emails and notes between the phone and Microsoft Outlook, Outlook express, Lotus...."... so it is easy!! :)
 
I read the N82 comes with 2GB of memory...is that true???
 
I think it's fair to say that the Samsung Omnia is a "proper"
multimedia phone and the N82 isn't.

Sure the N82 can play movies and play mp3's...but with 2GB on memory and a small
screen, the omnia wins in the multimedia category.

Camera, yes the N82 have the xeon flash, however, I am happy with all the pictures
i took with the Omnia's LED flash...
i took about 500 pictures so far , some of them at night and have no complains.

Oh please man :p It's a 2GB removable MicroSD card. You could get 10x8GB cards if you really wanted to. I see no reason how this is a contributing factor to the multimedia capability of a device.
 
Bar, I do not think that argument holds much water... to say a phone wins in the multimedia stakes based on two questionable criteria is dodgy to say the least. just as ea

We could easily take this argument further and say that the Omnia loses as it only supports 256K colors (65K effective) while the N82 supports 16M colors. And as stated the Omnia does not have a 22" screen so does this mean it is not a true "multimedia" device either? Where does one draw the line? Is screen size becoming the new mexapixel camera race we had a while back? As for the onboard memory would this mean if I bought a computer with a small hard drive it would not be a multimedia pc? That is what card slots are for... the N82 can have 8Gb no problem!

Anyway.... these arguments are silly.... after a few days I am almost 100% convinced my N82 can do more than your Omnia. Should we get together and have a shoot out?
 
I played around with a N82 plastic replica in black today, must say a lovely handset but as you alluded to earlier in one of your posts Lancelot, the keys are rather petite!!! I send in excess of 400 smses a month. I'm not sure if those small keys are going to be a hindrance or not? You finding them difficult to work with? Or is simply a case of getting used to them?
 
Sand, I am not finding it difficult but I really do not use the keypad a lot. I am not a big message sender and perhaps send two or three a day, and I have had no problems with that... and remember I have the silicon cover over the keypad too... One thing on the silver version (and again bear in mind the silicon cover I have on) is that the numbers are white so if the backlight is not on (which happens in dark conditions) they can be difficult to see from some angles. Not much contrast with the silver background.

Not sure whether you send them from the road or while next to your computer because f it is the latter then Nokia's PC Suite does have an application which allows you to type sms's and mms's and then send them through your phone.
