Nokia N82 or Samsung Omnia

OK, so now i kinda decided i want the Omnia. Purely based on the fact that I think i will enjoy the interface more than I will on the N82. I might regret it, but the only way to know will be to try it.

As fate would have it, now that I want the Omnia, it sounds like the MTN warehouse has no stock. I am on 2 waiting lists. And now, to top it off, i know of 2 branches that have N82's lying unwanted in the back room, waiting for a potential loving owner to commit to a 2 year affair with them ;)

So I'm thinking, if i have to wait another week for the Omnia, I might as well wait till the new contract prices come out on 9 November. Hopefully a price reduction is in store? My crappy bruised and battered N70 was stolen last Friday, and now I am using my 4 year old 6820, while not a bad phone, is a dumb-phone :(

Surfing the net is a pain on the N82 (and every other Nokia phone) in the sense that you can only see a tiny bit of a web page at a time, forcing you to scroll up down left right to get to what you want to see.

Yes, I know there is a preview window that pops up to show a "map" of the page you're viewing, but what I want is an Apple-esque solution where I can see and get anywhere in a flash.

Two issues with this post.... one is the assertion that those N82s are unwanted!! :) Second, be careful as prices are known to go up. Especially the Omnia at R500 on the Anytime500. That is a special offer of note so may be lost. But you are going for the Omnia so no loss if the price goes up and you come to your senses! :)

If the N82 does have voice tags, I'll go for the N82 (see my post just before yours)
 
Assuming i want voice tags, how does it work? Do u press a button before giving the voice command? I've had voice dialling on phones before, but never found it that appealing. But I suppose it's much improved and as u guys say, it can run anything.

Lancelot, if i go for the Omnia, it will be the R319 offer, as R500 per month is just too much for me to part with :) Also, obviously those N82's at the branches I visited are unwanted so far, by people that have visited them so far. Of course they could be snapped up any day, even by me :) I am really on the fence here, and currently being drawn towards the Omnia since the N81 experience I found a bit irritating.

I'm not saying the Omnia is a better phone than the N82. I'm just finding it more appealing to my wants and needs (big screen for surfing the net and qwerty -albeit virtual- keyboard).

I am still open to reasons as to why to not choose the Omnia, so don't dispair :p

ok, so they have the omnia and n82 in stock waiting for me to fetch today or tomorrow. I think i am gonna get the omnia... I'm 70% certain.
 
Ryan, you must get the Omnia...you won't regret it, i promise.

Just out of curiosity, why would you consider the N82 over the Omnia?

Well, i realise that there are certain things that the N82 will do better than the Omnia, and that the Omnia (like all phones) is not perfect. And its obviously more expense at R80 more per month. But yeah, hopefully I won't look back if i go for it which i might do after work today :)
 
Ryan, as stated before the N82 can easily run Opera or Opera mini, so if that is the only thing affecting your decision, don't let it!

Anyway, 70% seems like a high number so go for the Omnia if you really want and I just hope I never get to say I told you so.... the great thing is you will never really know unless you own both phones! :)

As for voice dialling/opening apps on the N82, just press and hold the right soft key, tone plays, say name of person or application, matches appear on screen, open/dial them. EDIT : Oh and by the way you can add any standard application you want to add a voice command to under the "voice comm" utility... and you can change the voice command, so if you want gallery to open when you say "images" then just set it that way...

No, it's not that. I'm thinking i will much prefer the way one moves around the screen when surfing on the Omnia. Also the on screen qwerty which i tried on an LG phone, and it was pretty cool and I could type 90% as fast as i could on the E71.

That is a dilemna! R1100~ cheaper over 2 years. There must be some catch, surely? Will comment there...
 
Latest smartphone show 66, in answer to Which Phone To Get, Steve Litchfield touts the N82 for media creation, iPhone for media consumption and Nokia E71/Blackberry Bold/HTC S740 for messaging freaks. Bit of a grey area tho when one's needs fall across different categories.
 
No, Omnia mentioned Ryan?!?! ;)

A phone getting mentioned in a "which phone to get" review nowadays, to me, would already insinuate that it does most things across the board well but is then viewed as the best in the chosen field... in the opinion of the reviewer of course! Not sure a phone would get a mention if it could message brilliantly but not do anything else at all...
 
:) Lance, I beg to differ. IMO, his recommendations apply with a specific purpose in mind. If one falls inbetween 2 categories, it's not as simple as one of the recommended phones making one happy. He says in his review that he falls inbetween 2 of the categories and chops and changes between 2 or 3 phones even! I'd like to buy just one phone, and realise I can't win in every category.
 
I too beg to differ (:)) as stated a phone that wins in one category will not be cr_p in every other category. It would surely not get a look in if it could not do all other chores to a reasonable degree...

I have to admit to not watching the video due to my cap but would I be correct in assuming that for media consumption he would be looking at screen size, audio output etc; for messaging freaks it would be a qwerty keyboard; and media creation the still and video camera?

If this is the case then I still know which option I would opt for....

No, not true. The iPhone is touted as the best for media consumption but has a crappy camera and cannot record video out of the box. His recommendations are helpful, but one has to decide for oneself what features are most important, and make a decision based on that. I'm choosing the Omnia for media consumption (movies and mp3s), emails, mobile office, decent camera. It's a jack of all trades, and just scores a bit higher in the experience I am looking for. Proof of the pudding will be in the eating...

If having a physical qwerty keyboard was a dealbreaker for me, i would go with the E71 or Bold. But it's not and the screens are just tooo small :p

[edit] PLayed with an iPhone tonight, and the responsiveness of the capacitive screen was awesome. Had a look at different features of the phone and it's a nice phone, but not at Vodacom's price.

Fair enough. I got the Omnia today. Haven't looked at the manual yet, am just trying to feel my way around so long. It's not the iPod and it is WinMo, so I've got a bit of a learning curve ahead of me.

Initial impressions of the camera with LED flash is that the pics are overexposed. I'll try to get to grips with the phone and its other features over the weekend and hopefully not be disappointed!
