Nokia N82 or Samsung Omnia

We could easily take this argument further and say that the Omnia loses as it only supports 256K colors (65K effective) while the N82 supports 16M colors. And as stated the Omnia does not have a 22" screen so does this mean it is not a true "multimedia" device either? Where does one draw the line? Is screen size becoming the new mexapixel camera race we had a while back? As for the onboard memory would this mean if I bought a computer with a small hard drive it would not be a multimedia pc? That is what card slots are for... the N82 can have 8Gb no problem!

Anyway.... these arguments are silly.... after a few days I am almost 100% convinced my N82 can do more than your Omnia. Should we get together and have a shoot out?

Not gonna argue about the removable memory, that is a very good point, but out of the box, the omnia wins in that category.

And the omnia is a very good pmp replacement and the nokia isn't.
 
Bar, I have made up my mind... others still are so best you substantiate your arguments if you want to give them information to help with their deciding.

I for one will not be using my cellphone as a replacement for my home theatre system. At best the phone will be used on the odd occasion for the little ones to watch a movie while we are on a long trip for instance. For this purpose the N82 will more than suffice. I watched some of Iron Man on it the other day and it proved itself to be more than sufficient for this need.

Oh yes and of course if I really get fed up with the screen size and there is a TV on hand I can always use the TV-out cable and watch the movie on a bigger screen!

If the movie playing abilities are not good enough then of course you have the NGage app that turns the N82 into a gaming console, well minus the gamepad of course! Now I spent a few minutes earlier playing Gameloft's Brothers In Arms and it was awesome. Have a peek : http://img178.imageshack.us/img178/2995/screenshotsmb4.jpg

I then played around and cropped, brightened, sharpened and changed the colours on a picture. I even played around and "cartoonised" it... all on my N82. Of course, for good measure, the picture was taken in the pitch dark with my N82 using the xenon flash. No problem of course because of the infrared autofocus light!

I then thought let me watch some YouTube videos so I started up the MobiTubia application to facilitate this in the simplest possible means. It allows me to search, play, save favourites all from within the Symbian platform with no need to a browser.

I then for good measure went onto the net and surfed a bit.

Now if that is not a "multimedia" device then I have no idea what is!!! Yes, yours may do some of that too but your claim is that the bigger screen alone defines a multimedia device. I beg to differ!

Oh and by the way, out of the box the N82 allows me to load, and watch, at least two Xvids of 700Mb each I have.... and this is without compressing them more, as after all it is onoly a small screen. I compressed 6 movies onto a two Gb card a week ago and the quality was still perfect for the screen size!!


* I'm not even going to get into the apps available as I am sure you could rattle off a whole bunch too (or could you)....

But how about the recent one I discovered that can be used a baby monitor, or noise detector, by setting it to automatically phone, sms, or mms with a sound clip, a preset number if the noise level is above a certain level.

Or the card reader that allows me to take a photo of a business card and then reads all the information on it (nothing spectacular you may say as OCRs are old hat) but then it manages to decipher this information and enter it into the relevant fields as a new entry in my contacts list!! Cell number goes in the mobile field, fax in fax field, occupation in the correct field etc etc.

I'm telling you this device has no limits!!! Hence the reason people have to mention the small keys as it is the only thing they can find that is the slightest bit wrong!! :)

How do the N82 guys find surfing the net on it? And what browser is best?

Not sure what browser was installed on my cousin's N81, but when moving around the page and holding down the direction key, the pointer would start to move very quickly and then a red outline would appear in the top right to show u where on the page you were zoomed into. Didn't seem to be an option to zoom out per se. I found this irritating.

Also today, I got to play with a friend's LG touchscreen mobile (not sure of the model). Was very responsive (not sure if it was running Win Mo in the background - could not find any evidence of that) and the qwerty on screen keyboard was pretty cool, but I did begin to find myself beginning to realise how cool the iPhone capacitive screen must be as opposed to the resistive screen on the LG or Omnia. I can live with a resistive screen, though i imagine in 2 yrs time all screens might be capacitive if the pricing comes down substantially?

But the Omnia is still a better multimedia phone.
Anyway, not gonna argue anymore...you obviously like your phone and i like mine.

We both chose what we believe is the better phone, and we are not
going to change our minds.

You said why you think the N82 is better and i said why i believe the Omnia is better...as far as i concern the topic is closed.

If anyone have anymore questions regarding the Omnia i'll be happy to reply
but i believe i said everything i have to about the N82.

The N82 comes with a Nokia browser which is fine but for good measure I have also loaded Opera and Opera mini just in case I prefer one to the other. I end up using Opera mini more often due to the lower bandwidth use.

I have heard that the resistive screens are used for a reason. In cold countries you are able to use it with your gloves etc on.

There's a bit of a clicking noise with each press of the buttons, and they're a bit stiff (though I guess this improves off with use). Having the cover showin in Lancelot's photos helps a lot, as it cushions the clicking and somehow seems to make it easier to type, as well as making it softer on your hands. (They keys, being so small, end up leaving little dents in my fingers if I type for a long time without the cover...)

I use Opera Mini as well, depending on what I need, and whether I'm connected to a fast WLAN network. The default browser supports Javascript, AJAX and Flash (though it's a bit of a dodgy Flash that I haven't gotten to work with a few websites), so unless I'm going to a site that absolutely requires any of those to function correctly, I use Opera Mini.

The default web browser does allow you to zoom out, and works similar to Opera Mini. (You press 8 to toggle whether you're zoomed in or looking at the overview.)

SkyeQuiKey is a dream. It's quite pricey though. Jbak Taskman is something else I use, and it's freeware.

I've found that since I updated my firmware to V30.0.019, my phone's been rebooting randomly once or twice a day. Meanwhile, the Music Player has been improved, and the camera image compressor is a lot less aggressive (so the pictures are overall a lot crisper). Weird trade-off...
 
Elyaradine, just to clarify something you mentioned - the clicking buttons. It comes across as a problem or a negative in your post, not sure if this was the intention, but I feel the clicking is a great thing. It leaves you in no doubt that you have pressed the button in question properly. You get some "feedback" from the button.

I'll add, as pointed out by you, that I have not typed without the cover so not sure how thins changes things. I have no doubts that excessive texting will result in sore fingers but this is likely to happen on most phones. Even my touch pad on my laptop hurts my finger tips after extended use.

Yeah, I did intend that keypad thing as a negative. But either way, it does do it, whether you want it to or not.

OK, so with Opera or Opera Mini, does it still use like a red outline mechanism to indicate where on the screen one is focused on? Reason it irritated me was it seemed kinda hard to control, but perhaps it requires practice :)
 
R there any Omnia guys in Cape Town southern suburbs willing to let me check out their Omnia first hand? :D

I have not set up my wifi at home yet.... just woke this morning thinking i need to do it specifically for use on my N82. I'll let you know how it goes if I am not too lazy to do it! :)

Out of interest the N82 comes with a WLAN wizard so I assume it should not be a problem. You can also load Psiloc connect, I have not used it but am lead to believe it finds the "best" network for you without any input from yourself.

Psiloc Connect is an application which will get rid of all your access point problems. Upon installation the application will create a new access point on your phone - Psiloc Connect. Using that access point in any of your applications will let Psiloc Connect handle the connectivity. It will do so by firstly searching the current surroundings for known WLAN networks, a connection will be made though the best available WLAN. If however, there are no WLANs in your vicinity, Psiloc Connect might use 3G/GSM to connect to the Internet.

Speed
Psiloc Connect always makes sure you use the fastest possible Internet connection available.

Save money

On the Omnia, very simple to do. Takes about 3-4 taps to get to Wireless Manager and switchin WLAN on (if you didnt make it a shortcut of some sort, in which case it'll b quicker). If the phone doesnt find internet connection on the WLAN, it connects through GPRS. ezpz
 
Omnia and Voice Tags

:mad:A great phone yes; BUT a bad mistake from Samsung not to include Voice Tags (Voice speed dialing). Does anyone now if there is any third party software that will work on the Omnia which I can use, I cannot use the phone without it (just forget about MS Voice Command - it doesn't work on Omnia). I sold my HTC Touch Diamond to switch to the Omnia - just to discover no Voice Tags, although most previews do not mentioned it.

Please help
