Nokia N82 or Samsung Omnia

Omnia - my initial impressions after a day or 2

OK, had the Omnia for 48 hrs now. Haven't read the manual yet and these are my initial impressions. Apparently u have to download the manual from the net? Played around with the phone on the weekend, but didnt get to play with it today at all as I have had no spare time. It's gonna be a painful learning process getting to grips with this phone, but hopefully I will get there. I should JRTFM (read the manual :)).

Had to make a couple of calls to my voicemail (for calls I missed) which was irritating as it locks the keypad by default, and for voicemail u kinda need the keys to be active as well as on louspeaker, so first u gotta put on loudspeaker once u have unlocked it, then unlock it again to access the keypad!

Pro: Lots of space, am finding it plays most xvid by with the Touch player already.
Con: Find it a mission to browse my movies/mp3z, it's confusing cause I'm not sure offhand what is the best way to open movies/mp3z.

Con: Am finding the menu interface confusing and inconsistent at times. Very irritating. They (Samsung) have masked WinMo to some extent, but at times its bare WinMo. This incongruency is whats causing me confusion! And I'm an IT guy! My colleagues both have had WinMo phones for ages now, and tell me it's just a matter of getting used to. They thought the phone was cool, but the girlie stylus is total doffness. Am gonna see if I can survive without it, and use the mousepad rather. It spoils the slimness of the phone. REALLY NEED A SCREEN PROTECTOR!!! The factory applied plastic cover looks k@k as its not evenly applied and has bubbles and piece of lint in one place :D Omnia guys, plz answer some burning questions in the OMnia Tips/Tricks thread :p

So far the pics I have taken indoors look k@k. When the flash is used the pics are overexposed. When it isn't used, the pics are blurry (though it's probably our indoors dog that moves too quickly) or grainy. Outdoor pics of the outside (slow older dog) are decent though :)

Con: Really sucks that the Today screen is not very customisable. It is customisable, but stupidly so. I mean, if using 'SAmsung Today 2' layout, there are 3 ways to make a phone call (hard key and 2 soft keys), 4 if u count the one by default in the Start menu. Thankfully that one u can change!!

Hopefully the experience will improve once I know the ins and outs of the phone. However, after 48hrs with a Nokia, I would probably have less to complain about! The N96 is out now on MTN for R359 per month on Anytime 200 :(

UPDATE:It's getting better. There is a lot of nifty stuff u can do with WinMo, but it's not always apparent I suppose. I still havent read the manual tho :) Hopefully Samsung makes some improvements soon to the interface, as the lack of 'Samsung added interface' customisation is irritating.

The LED flash is way too strong. I hope they fix this with a software/driver update soon. In flashlight mode, it is hectically powerful!!!

UPDATE2:Am surviving without the stylus, and will try to find finger/thumb friendly applications where possible. Have my 'eyeliner' attached to my car keys just in case i do need it, which i haven't in the last 2 days. :p
Further update 18 Nov: Haven't had to use the stylus since i attached it to my key ring, 2 weeks ago.

My colleague has an HTC Diamond, and I must say, the interface on there seems to be much more polished, from the 1 minute I fiddled with it. Didn't want to fiddle too much, u know, a phone is a personal thing and all :p

Update3:The data connection seems to die from time to time and then i need to reset it. Could be my browsers acting up, i dunno. Pretty irritating. Must still load Opera Mini and see how that fares. [edit]Eventually I figured out how to kill the data connection without a reset because otherwise IE would just hang and hang trying to use the GPRS. Lately, the connection kills itself and then the phone just reconnects when needed.[/edit]

Update4: Negatives of the Omnia in one kind of rant post, for the benefit of ppl expecting a solid phone, think again...

Update5 18 Nov: Positive initial impressions of the Garmin GPS. http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showpost.php?p=2288783&postcount=395
I STILL haven't read the Omnia manual yet, and I don't know if I ever will now. Too lazy and busy!

On the Omnia, very simple to do. Takes about 3-4 taps to get to Wireless Manager and switchin WLAN on (if you didnt make it a shortcut of some sort, in which case it'll b quicker). If the phone doesnt find internet connection on the WLAN, it connects through GPRS. ezpz
How do I make sure that it is using Wifi (if present or connected) when browsing the web?

Anyone have a link for Opera Mini for the Omnia? Isnt listed under supported phones on the Opera site.

And is there a damn way to customise the Samsung Today screens?

These q's should be in the OMnia tips/tricks thread but nobody seems to be at home :(

Ryan, popped back on here to say I was wondering where the updates were but I see you did them on an existing post hence no appearance in "new posts".

Interesting to here your first impressions on the Omnia. I have to state up front that I have a distinct advantage with the N82 in that I came from the N95 so the interface is totally familiar to me. Bearing this in mind I have to say that I have not had any regrets about my choice.

Everything is as expected with the N82 as it too is an S60v3 device. The things I have been impressed with are:

Xenon flash - no need to state this really as it is obvious but this flash works a charm. I take indoor image of a moving baby and every time I end up with a clear picture. If anything sometimes I need to switch it off just because it blinds everyone! :) I have to say I used to get a problem with quick moving objects blurring with my Samsung D900 and I was hoping this was something the make had sorted out... it used to be impossible to take photos of kids or animals with it.

Memory - coming from 64mb RAM with very little free on the N95 to 128mb RAM with about 80mb free has been a joy. I no longer have to juggle applications to ensure the phone does not freeze! I can open what I please and not worry about the phone hanging!

Applications
- I was already aware of the S60V3 apps out in the market but due to renewed interest with a new phone I have discovered more that I love and wonder how I got by without them. Decide you would like something on your phone, search the net for it and in all likelihood it exists out there! SkyQuikey needs special mention here... no more opening my phone book or searching for applications... press the keys that correspond to the letters in the contacts/application name, not three times for c mind you, just once each, and within three presses the name in on my screen and ready to open with one more press!

Screen - there was a lot of talk about this screen being "small". I can tell you that I have not once thought I miss my bigger N95 screen. The N82 is more than ample. Even when using Garmin and having the phone standing in my clock recess in my car I have absolutely no problem sneaking a peak at the screen and being able to see all I need to.

As mentioned before, still the only thing I could probably gripe about, if I was looking for one, it is the keypad. It is far far far from un-useable but also far from ideal. I suppose it is a trade off between them not taking up much space and being useable. Bigger keys would be easier to use but you would have to lose something else. I have not yet had a problem pressing the wrong numeric key but have on more than one occasion pressed the centre of the D-pad when trying to press a direction. Bear in mind I too have the silicon cover on so not sure if this makes it a little more difficult to use.

So all in all happy with the N82... I have not had many "oohs" and "aaahs" based on appearance but after showing some of the phone's capabilities I get plenty! :)

Cool Lancelot. I'll envy you with your reliable camera :)
I guess I'll add to my old post if i have other updates, just to keep it all in one place.

One thing is, being on MTN, so far at work (a couple of clients) and at home, the signal and call quality is not as good as Vodacom.

hahaha... That's classic... Next time get 2 slow outside dogs or get the N82...

:eek:linky please:D Oh not to worry I found it...

Don't delay, Opera mini really works well...

Yeah, I have heard talk of that Ryan but so far I have not had problems. I have seen my phone switch from 3G to E (Edge) on the display every so often but I have not really noted any actual issues.

An N82 update from me..... I just loaded speech-to-text recognition software on my N82 and am busy training it!! Have "spoken an sms" to it already and it looks good!! No more keypad for me! ;) The odd mistake so far but it allows you to train it so I expect to resolve those issues! Damn this is hot...

I'm 'typing' this using voice recognition text input on my n82. I just realised you can use it on Internet so I thought I'd test it on my favourite forum. Well 2 sentences in and it's working charm so far. I am having to make the odd correction every now and then but I'm sure in time I will train the software better. It is the British version so I am sure it battles with my south African accent. Anyway, that's enough showing off for now. :-)

You kidding?!!! That is so convenient!!! So you can dictate smses? You say British app so I assume it's a 3rd party app and not out the box?

No, not out the box... it is called VoiceSignal VoiceMode v2.0.28 for S60v3. There is a British version and an American version. I chose British as I thought it would spell better and understand me better! :)

It is convenient but I want to see if the usability improves. I "trained" it by reading about 200 phrases into it to start in a totally silent room and what I have found is that it then battles when driving to pick up what I am saying. I suppose it is understandable with the wind noise. In fact I tested it and pressed the green button to record voice and never said anything and the software typed "who", obviously as a result of the wind noise! ;)

hehe... Yeah I found it 10 euro, bargain, that is a clever piece of software... Damn this software is not compatible with the N95... mmm, the US edition is though...

Two posts up Smooth.... :)

Just a word of caution guys, do a bit of research as the app does send an mms every so often to the app creators to "help them improve the product". I turned off my mms access point to overcome this, not ideal but when I need to send an mms (which is not that often) I turn it back on!

Well I haven't loaded the software as yet as everytime I attempted to pay for it (about 6 or 7 times) I got an error message, check the details you have entered... etc etc... I eventually gave up. Then just out of curiosity I check my online bank statement and there's over R500 worth of pending transactions. It's an account I use only for onlilne shopping and this was the only attempted purchase today so I guess I'll have to make a trip to the bank in the am... Bit of a nuisance really... The transactions have been processed despite the error message I kept receiving and I didn't progress to the down load software stage!!!! Disappointing...

Oh dear, that is not nice! What browser as a matter of interest. I have found some issues recently with things like forms and payments not working nicely with FF3.

Just to throw a spanner in the works here, I decided to go with a Nokia N78 instead of either of these two phones because of the FM transmitter. The camera on the N82 didn't sell me over because, well, I have a perfectly good digital camera that goes around wherever I go and this 3.2 is fine for the odd pic I might have to take. And I just felt the N82 was pretty damn ugly. The Omnia I played with for a while but didn't like how slow the thing was. The auto screen shifting takes about 2 seconds before it registers and actually does anything.

Anyways, this N78 is pretty decent looking, the keypad is fine for my use and I haven't had an issue with hitting the wrong keys like some reviewers have had and the overall quality of the phone has impressed me. The only issues are that that the battery cover is pretty flimsy and the camera has no lens cover. But regardless, I've had it for a day and am happy with it. Will post more if anything happens to change my opinion. Just thought considering the N78 and N82 are pretty similar, I might as well throw this in for good measure...

Cool DJ, we should really have a Nokia thread on here. They all use Symbian so swapping comments about different phones will still be useful even if we don't have the exact same phone.

I'm not unhappy with the Omnia per se, but it's not the easiest phone to get used to. If i had to choose again, I would probably go N82 as there are some things irritating with the Omnia that aren't deal breakers, but I do notice. And Lancelot with his fancy voice recognition software is not helping the situation ;)

Get the N96. Wish I waited 2 months extra to get this. Instead I got the HTC Diamond Touch... Anyone wanna trade lol
