I promised I wouldn't say "I told you so..." but I never promised not to rub it in in other ways! :)

If it is any consolation Ryan I reckon it is the same with girlfriends (:)), cars, houses or anything we possess (dare I add country we live in into this mix? :)), and that is that something (somewhere? :)) else always looks more intriguing or better. You sometimes just need to be satisfied with what you have got ... ;)

This thread has been going for a while and I've just skipped it everytime. I'm also due for a upgrade now and don't know what to get.

But the question I have is why do you compare the N82 with the Omnia?? I don't think it's fair. I'd rather say if you want to compare a Nokia device with the Omnia then it should be the N96.

And if people on here think that the N82 is a better option than the Omnia then I definately will go for the N96.

As you state this thread has been going for a while so the N96 was still just a dream at the time of inception! :) Also recent reviews do not seem to rate the N96 as highly strangely enough. I suppose it is because it is not really doing anything new, but also the design gets a bit of a knock. Compare the reviews for the N96 and N82 on GSMArena.

Just saw you are wondering about the DivX support on the Omnia phone.

Here some answers:

- the phone will also play Xvid files
- resolution limitation is 720x480. Videos with this resolution or higher will not play on the phone or via TV-out. Bitrate limitation is 1.5 Mbps at 30 fps.

Agreed. I too have been lusting after the N96 and I too am a little put off it by the some elements of the GSMArena review but it's still the Nokia flagship handset at the mo and it still has far more fire power than an Omnia... The big question is does the N96's performance justify it's premium price tag in particular when compared with the N82. The answer seems to be NO....

thats the thing, the price tag! Thats why i thought MTNs 264pm for the Omnia on Anytime 200 was pretty good deal all things considered. I havent played with the newer Nokias so I cant comment on how it performs against the Omnia. Just seem the value of the Omnia against its price tag is quite good value.

Well, then check the N82s price tag..... besides the touch screen interface (which may not be all that in the long term) the N82 kicks the Omnia's butt (my opinion yes, but feel free to read through this entire thread for other opinions from reviewers!)

Perhaps it's because I haven't played around with any settings on the Omnia, but it doesn't hold a candle to these pics u r showing here. Ur pics r pretty damn impressive!

And having to reset the phone is becoming a daily occurence, when the screen goes black and nothing will wake it up.

I think where the Omnia is failing is that the software that is on it, is not customised to it. Loaded the GMail app, and it doesnt work, kicks me out once logging in. Opera Mini is not an Omnia version and text input and even navigation seems a bit doff.

It's a decent phone, but it can be irritating. WHen the Smartphones Show video review comes out on the Omnia, I don't think it's gonna be pretty :sick:
 
Just to let you know, those are the default settings on the N82... I always just use it with Auto Focus, Auto Flash and what ever else is standard when I switched it on. No tweaking or playing around.

In the, umm how long is it now, one month I think, that I have had the N82 I have only had to restart it twice and in both cases it was because of some software I had installed (one being a premium version of quick office which I later found was known to freeze the phone!), and I have been known to load some "under the counter" and "behind the back" stuff. After installing and running the app the phone would not respond so I would immediately restart it without waiting to see if the phone would sort it out itself.

And Ryan, I must apologise as whenever I post I think it must come cross as me trying to rub it in but I am really just giving my experience of the N82 as you are the Omnia. We need to bear in mind at all times that I moved from an S60v3 device in the N95 to this S60v3 device so that could make a difference...
 
oh well thats it then, i will rather go for my original first choice the Bold or the N82
Only thing is, the N82 doesnt come with the Garmin stuff, what will that cost extra?

You could search the internet... or in fact even these forums for a "cheaper" way

Omnia

The Samsung Omnia tries to hide its underpinnings and trick you into thinking it's an iPhone, and it fails. It's not an awful device: If you're checking off a list of must-have features, such as GPS, Wi-Fi, and long battery life, the Omnia will probably hit almost all of them (3G being the notable exception). Its camera, video playback, and battery performance are all exemplary, and it's not a bad voice phone. But anyone with a feel for good software design should stay away—especially at this price. If you need a device with a touch screen. check out the iPhone 3G, the Samsung Instinct, or the LG Dare, even though the latter two aren't true smartphones. If not, the Nokia N95 8GB is an unlocked multimedia powerhouse.

EDIT : For Dudley, they also review the BB Bold 9000 (not sure if this is the one you were looking at), but this is a strange choice as it does not fit in the same category as the other two at all....

well i have to give the n82 credit for its camera, but i've been told the omnia's are receiving software updates that will make them a little better to manage and work, i'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt and see if its any better by the time i get mine in 2 weeks. I think I can survive with the Omnia for 2 yrs or at least until upgrade time.
So far i've tried Nokia (till the N70 and the BB). My main reason for going Omnia is really to try something different. I also refuse to believe that the camera is so crap, why got to all the effort of putting in a 5MP and its crappy? Just doesnt make sense.

Saying all that, I have to draw some points that the Omnia is a 16GB device!
The deal includes Garmin Maps for life, so u dont have to fork out extra.
Omnia does, push email apparently, so I'm happy about that.
The WIFI and 7.2 HSDPA is really going to be sweet when browsing, and the browser is looking a lot richer to.
I also like the fact that it will play almost any MMedia format

Well, I guess, thats why we all like different things, each one to their own, and really comes down to what you need the phone for. But where credit is due is in the Nokia camera. It is superior, hands down.

yes the Bold is a different type of phone but its MM and browsing capabilities are also suppossed to be pretty good. I also just like the way BB works, its solid and friendly, the BB OS is also just so nice to work on.
For now I'm going to experiment with the Omnia and I will be honest in my evaluation, but i promise to read the manual first:)
 
As an Omnia owner, I have to agree with what PCMag is saying about it.

This was my reasoning too, and I would warn anyone from using the same logic. Sure, the phone might get better with firmware and software updates, but out of the box, it's irritating. Dude, I also had the N70 which was totally crap. Don't judge the N82 by it.

It doesnt make sense but it seems totally crap to me! It's not a 'real' camera like the N82 has the right to claim.

My viewpoint of the Omnia is that it can do everything, but it doesnt necessarily do everything well.

And from Lancelot has been saying, the N82 can also do everything and do them well.

2 of my friends got the Omnia this weekend, and another one is getting it next week.

The 5MB camera with auto focus/smile/face recognition is maybe not as good as the
N82, but it's still amazing!

and pictures in low light conditions are not bad at all.
