Nokia N97 from Vodacom

Nokia PC Suite doesn't have Linux support either. This is pretty much the norm with device manufacturers.
 
I read all the feedback, but it seems it is only MTN stocking this phone at this stage. Has anyone been able to (or know of someone) that got their N97 from VodacomSP?
 
Finally got mine today from the local Vodashop. Very impressed so far.
 
Hi

Any N97 owners been able to update the firmware. Used the "over the air" udpdate on the phone, but it says there is no updates available. Current out of the box firmware is v10.0.012.

Yeah updated my firmware last night....but did it via the connect to pc and update method. Update was 110MB odd...but went smoothly...

Tried that as well with the latest software updater app, but it also told me my software is up to date? I still have the backlight/unlock problem.

What is your firmware version after the update (is your handset also a Vodacomsp handset)?

I also did this and got the same answer till I did the software update under "tools" "nokia software updater" and "update manager" in the OKI interface
Version after update is
V11.0.0.021 (dail star hash 0000 star)

MY HANDSET IS MTN

I did mine through the Ovi Application Suite....also updated to version 11.0.0.021 - didnt give me any hassles.

Also on MTN....
 
Anyone know the difference between the standard firmware and the vodafone firmware?

What are the pros and cons of running the vodafone firmware?

I got a call I rejected it, the answer button is 2mm away from the reject button wtf and its touch sensitive hehehehe...

The slide cant slide straight up, it only tilts...
The stylus sucks....:rolleyes::rolleyes:
They gave cheap headsets...

I havent reached the any cool parts of the phone yet...
Ill see what else I discover during the weekend...

To answer a call you just slide your finger on the screen from Left to right.....cant be easier than that surely. Actually it took me two days to figure that one out!:)

I dont even use the stylus.....havnt found it necessary.....even on very small links on a website, my finger clicks them no problem.

I didnt like the phone before the software update, After the Update it was pretty awesome I thought.

Oh my hat....you serious? I had no idea....how funny is that....

Was going to list that as one of my annoyances. My first call I got, the more I tapped answer or even the green button - the more it said unlock keypad first or did not do anything - thought WTF thats a stupid feature...tried activating any key answer, made no difference! Needless to say I missed the first few calls I received....

Now I know!

The ONLY annoyance I have with this phone, now that the answer part is resolved - is the speakerphone. I used the N95 speakerphone ALL THE TIME, was loud and clear....the N97's speakerphone just does not compete! Otherwise, an awesome piece of technology!

Cell phones have always been a status symbol, or did I miss something here? Damn, maybe I shouldn't spend so much money on phones, lol!
 
My feedback for those interested.

I am truely beginning to form a love-hate relationship with this phone - some features I love, others I absoluty hate. It does some things amazingly well, yet it does some of the most basic features so incredibly bad.

Maybe I need more time with it (have only had it for 2 days and I am sure other N97 owners will disagree with me), but as soon as the new phone (and "first touch-screen phone" - in my case) novelty starts wearing off, the reality of living with this phone on a day-to-day basis becomes quite clear.

Don't get me wrong - I really, really like this phone and have been using Nokias exclusively for the past 14 years, yet it seems the reviews were true - Nokia/Symbian has a long way to go when it comes to touch-screen interfaces.

I have no gripes about speed, I also did not expect "Iphone" like user-friendliness - yet, it seems Nokia focussed so hard in putting every possible hardware gadget into this device that it had no time/budget left to focus on the basic day-to-day GUI/cellphone functions. Yes it dails, yes it can SMS, yes it can MMS etc, but simple things like looking up numbers during a call, giving numeric ("press 1 for sales") feedback during calls etc, left me frustrated (if I am prompted one more time to setup my e-mail mid SMS-sending...). Tonight I was prompted that a new version of Nokia Maps was available. After accepting the download I was informed that there was not enough memory to complete the upate process!? This on a phone with 32GB of storage? (Googled it and it seems to be a common problem as certain Nokia apps insists on being crammed into the 10MB "phone" memory?)

I will load the new firmware - maybe the update solves a lot of these issues.

I personally think the N97's biggest initial selling point (the touch screen), is also it's biggest flaw (the Symbian touch interface).

I will not discourage anyone from getting this phone - it is a great device and the good outweighs the bad - if you are a true Nokia fan, you will love it, but I realy hope Nokia keeps those firmware updates comming. Symbian's touch interface still has a very long way to go.


P.S. I agree with a previous poster - the N95 speakers/sound is much louder/clearer than that of the N97 - pitty.

tbh, my experience with touch phones has been frustrating. I tried once to compose a message on an iphone 3g and it drove me nuts. Personally i think apple stuff is overrated. But thats another thread on its own.

in general i think touch screens slow you down. I'll see how my outlook changes once i'm using the n97.
What really hooked me on this phone was the slideout mechanism and qwerty. Other features are all i want too

With iPhone OS 3, you can tilt the iPhone to type in landscape mode.

''Keyboard'' is huge. :)

I still think the black N95 8GB was one of Nokia's best ever.

So true. The N95 is a true legend. Almost 3 years down the line it is still one of the most popular cell phones of all time and will remain be the N-series model to be topped untill a truely worthy successor comes along... ;)

Jammie I think the firmware update will sort a lot of things out for you....I too was quite frustrated before the update....afterwards Im quite happy. Big trick here from me is that there is this little learning curve with this phone. Once I get it its all good.

Comming from the N95 (first version and my best phone till now) I do agree with the speaker issue. I dont really use that feature too much so it doesnt bother me. The headset for me is a lot better than the one I had on the N95.

Last night I loaded some cool apps for this phone
Trimble Geocache Navigator (for Geocaching):D
A compass (making use of the phones onboard compass)
Scientific Calculator
A spirit level (for checking those squiff picture frames:)):D
Stopwatch
Sports tracker:rolleyes:
Google Maps:cool:
Nimbuzz (combines, Skype, messenger, facebook, etc into one app):)

Amoungst other things

My one major gripe at the mo is call quality. I cant determine if its just my phone with a weak signal or problems with the callers phone....
