I have Norton installed as my anti-virus protection, but I find the general consensus on forums such as MyBB, is that Norton is far from being the best virus scanner around.

I've had a few virus attack attempts, and a few firewall intrusions coming through the past few months, but fortunately Norton has picked them up (to the best of my knowledge).

I know I'll be shot down by forumites for using Norton, but can anyone recommend a good virus scanner and firewall besides Bit Defender, which IMO is no good?

Free: Avast
Paid: NOD 32 or Kaspersky

Common does Avast ever clean anything? All it does is give some coool warning with the voice thing going on but hteres no option to clean the file.

Using Avast 4.8 pro - seems better than some others - detects everything so far and not had any issues since changing from McAfee a few years back.

Thanks for the input!

Done some digging, and it looks like BitDefender, Kaspersky and Nod32 are generally rated the best. BitDefender being the cheapest.

My Top 3:
1) Panda my fav.. Very good protection.
2) Nod32, Nice easy layout and don't use to much resources.
3) Bitdefender is also good, but there is a bunch of stuff on it which I hate.

combine any of these 3 with MalwareBytes anti-malware and you are pretty safe against most nasties on the net.

You can safely try NOD32. I haven't tried it myself, as I do not use M$, but The_Techie is the leading expert around here and says that NOD32 is the best.

.i find an effective firewall to be the best remedy.. I have no av on my machine now for over 2 years.. Aginentum is the one i use..
That and a good ghost of my c drive every month or so.. Then if by chance i do get hit i just wig back to the previous ghost..
I find there is no better av than knowing what should and should not be running.. I have a great blockpost list which i update fairly often with sites i read about etc.. But yeah.. Firewalls do it all for you.. Ie.. Don't let the virus on in the first place.. Once its there you're on your way to toast anyhow..
Av's just victimise folk who know little better.. Imo

Got Nod32 - excellent. Also installed Avast and Comodo Firewall on lappie, also very good. With Norton I think the general dislike is the bloatware as well as the ineffectiveness.

Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite.

It's lightweight and does an excellent job. I used to use NOD32 but I stopped using it as it failed to pick up a keylogger that ZA picked up... And yes I updated definitions regularly

ZA is both an effective firewall and anti-virus. My 2c

ESET Smart Security is IMO by far the best, if you have time to setup the firewall to your liking it will be the best. Seeing as most don't bother and simply turn the firewall off.

BitDefender will be my second choice. A little bit more resource demanding, but has excellent cover. Best thing about it is its preventive measures, the behavioral sensor, being able to detect malware by how it behaves. My change

Sophos AV :D Works like a charm, it's fast and reliable and has excellent auto cleanup / remove / quarantine functionality :D It's a bit costly but it works great, also they have a support center in SA that is completely on the ball!
