Nuke Windows XP by 2012, says Gartner

"In various Gartner polls and surveys, 80 per cent of respondents report skipping Windows Vista."

Vista was just cr*p. they should rather nuke that instead.

WTF is Gartner and why do they think their opinions are so ground breaking? Obviously if Windows XP is being phased out by 2014, big businesses should have a plan in place..Nothing profound there. Any reasonable IT person could figure that one out. Gartner also said that we do not want Skype. Look what a success skype has been. Like I said...WTF is Gartner and why should their opinions count?

Gartner are completely useless. You pay hundred of thousands to subscribe to their service....for what!! Bunch of crooks!

Windows XP will be phased out when people are ready to move on, no sooner. Gartner or not. Perhaps some will move prematurely because of this announcement, perhaps it will help some make the move more timely. At the end of the day... what's the big deal? Perhaps people will move when their PC's loaded with XP fail and they replace them with PCs that come with OEM copies of 7. Rofl @ noise about nothing.

Bwahahaha.

Lots of people and small biz will still be running XP for a long time... untill malware will make it practically impossible.

Then they'll have to decide between Linux and Windows9...

Does Gartner work for Microsoft? Nothing wrong with my XP at home or work. And I see no reason to change. If it ain't broke, why fix it?

we are still using server 2003 and xp pro machines.. why change when all is running perfectly? The only difference i can see is just spending a lot of money...

Windows Vista has put me off ever upgrading to another Micro$oft operating system!

I have expensive hardware (business related) that will not run under Vista and one therefore must assume Windows 7 also!

Having read the specifications of Windows 7 all will get is my external hardware not working (no it can't be upgraded - all manufactures of this hardware support XP only) and some very pretty screens! The latter I can download from numerous site to make XP look as pretty as Windows 7 - I'm happy to stay with XP and let Bill Gates go hungry!!

I agree! I'm a strong believer or new hardware/new OS... I keeping my current setup for as long as possible.

Agreed. When I need to upgrade I'll probably do the same with my OS ;)

Gartner says I must go and spend R36 000 over 12 machines excluding down-time to fix something that works fine.

Gartner can kiss my ...

The fewer people run XP the less malware there will be written for it.

Gartner isn't talking to Joe Public, they're talking to organisations with typically thousands of machines and applications that may not work on Win7 etc. so planning an upgrade isn't so simple, and their announcements are aimed at managers who aren't necessarily technical for medium-term planning purposes. Their work is obviously useful to their target market, I'm quite sure they don't care about your opinions given that you're not part of their target market.

Aah, so perhaps Gartner is just being M$' commercial voice?
