Obvious and not so Obvious Short cuts..

So I use a whole bunch of shortcuts that I've come across over the years that make life just that little bit easier. Yet everyday someone shows me a short cut I didn't know about..

As such, I'd like this thread to be posts of short cut key strokes that we use that others may or may not know about...

for example:

Safari: Command + clicking on a link = opening link in a new Tab.

In Safari Command + i Will save the website into an email.
In Safari Command + Shift = i Will save the URL into an email.
Exactly the same as going in Safari and going FILE "Mail Contents of Page"

Another one is not much of a shortcut but there are allot of people out there that don't realize the interaction between Safari and the rest of the OS. You can simply drag an image off a webpage that you want to save, either to a folder or simply drag it to iPhoto to be stored forever!

The best thing about shortcuts is defining your own in the Keyboard and mouse pref pane (where any menu item can be made into a shortcut either for a specific application or across the board).

this is not really a shortcut, but... there is an application called launchy that I use. I just hit Ctrl+Space and start typing the application I wish to launch. It auto-completes and gives a list of possible matches. I used to got "Start | Run" quite often, but I rarely use it anymore

Other lesser known shortcuts I use:
Start/Windows Key + E opens Windows Explorer
Start/Windows Key + M Minimises all windows
Start/Windows Key + D Shows the desktop
Start/Windows Key + F Opens the Search (Find) dialogue
Start/Windows Key + R Opens the Run dialogue
Start/Windows Key + L Locks the desktop

ROFL! These are all Windows Shortucts... You use "Launchy" We have spotlight built in standard

Yip! Nothing in the subject or post about mac... and remember, safari is available for windows now and the macs can also run Windows!

Even if you were talking about Safari for Windows, non of your shortcuts are valid...

Okay let's get this thread kicked-off. Me personal favourites:

1. Command + Spacebar = Spotlight Search

2. F11 = Show Desktop

3. F12 = Dashboard

In iTunes:

Option + Command + Forward/Back button = Track through song.

And how could I forget the famous quit shortcut :

Command + Q

I don't know if you guys use Command + Shift + 4 to do a screen capture?

One step further is once you are in Screen Capture mode press Spacebar to invoke a "Camera Hotspot" Capture. Pretty cool

The one I use quite often is in any cocoa app, hover your mouse cursor over a word and press ctrl-apple-d to look up the word in the dictionary.

You can set it to go there if you like.

Another thing you can change with screen capture is the file type - I prefer jpg instead of the default png. If you want to change it go to terminal and enter:

defaults write com.apple.screencapture type jpg

of course you can change the jpg to pdf and tif if you prefer.
