Obvious and not so Obvious Short cuts..

Is there any shortcut able to Show hidden files? For some reason, MacOSX creates a .Trashes file that is hidden on my 2GB SD Card. I can view it in XP but cannot delete it in XP. So i'm thinking the only way to delete that .Trash file is through OSX, but I can't see hidden files?
 
from what I understand, that is a file that the Mac system creates and is unavoidable. You'll probably land up seeing DS_Store and a few others which I cant remember right now, but as far as I know you cannot truly delete them if it is Mac formatted media.

You'd be surprised how many hidden files there are on your desktop alone. :)

Download tinkertool - select "Show hidden and system files" from the finder options.

There are a few apps available that will remove the mac droppings from removable media.

BTW - deleting hidden files might have unwanted side effects so do it at your own peril.

Ok I typed this in the terminal:

defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
killall Finder

bwana, you right - I didn't realise they were so many hidden files all over the place!! Okay I managed to view the hidden .Trash file on the SD Card. My word - it was 1.8GB alone - no wonder I couldn't store any more data onto it. And I was so confused.

Here's my question... You know like in XP, Shift +Delete permanently deletes the file, and does not send it to the Recycle Bin?

How do I permanently delete a file in OSX?
 
I dunno how to do that in the gui (can do in the terminal) but that .Trash on the card will empty if you empty your trash can.
 
*bump* does anyone know how... and for relevance to this thread.. the shortcut of how to maximise a window open? Like right now I have safari open but its 3/4 of the screen and doesnt extend past the dock space.. even if I remove/hide the dock.

Have you tried Zoom in the Window menu? That should at least take it to the bottom of the screen.

EDIT - to clarify zoom toggles between a standard size and a user defined size so if you stretch out a window to fill the screen it should work.

BTW - if you want to add a keystroke shortcut for the Zoom see my first post of the thread. :)
 
After typing a word press (ESC) and it invokes the dictionary/thesaurus for alternate words/spelling
