ODM TopTV Review

My fix-it list would include: prioritizing the procurement of more current entertainment, working on airing those missing channels pronto, fixing their schedules (both the TV guide and ensuring that the right shows are on the correct channels) and hey presto ... you’ve got a decent offer that’s worthy of giving DStv a run for its money.

After all these years DSTV are still unable to syncronize their TV guide and what is actually show. Programs and times are often wrong. Lets Top TV can get it right.

Tonight we had some semi heavy rain in brackenfell area and I lost TopTV reception for some 20 odd minutes. When I say lost I mean no picture with the odd second or 2 coming through every 5 minutes or so. Apparently someone close by also lost reception on DSTV, but not for nearly the same length of time. This is probably why 80cm dishes are a requirement, but even still I lost reception.

I received a proper installation from SATS R US, so I will monitor it and see what my options are.

As for content it is already worth the R249 compared to DSTV compact at just R20 less. If this is the start, I am excited to see what will be on offer by year end.

Hi , is it possible to share with us the content ? I am looking at this as a option but want to see the actual content first.

Thanks

What I want to know is are the adverts twice the volume of the program you are watching? DSTV drives me insane with this. If Top TV can get this right I will move just because of that!

I personally find a lot of the adverts but they all seem to be of shows coming on TOP-TV

I haven't been able to discover just what radio channels (as opposed to music) are available. Anybody know? I'm particularly keen on the domestic BBC radio channels (BBC Radios 1 through to 7) -- not the World Service which is what we get in the DSTV bouquet.

SSHD, DiscHD, MnetHD + Uncapped. What more do you want in life?

I canceled my DSTV HD in January. The quality on the HD channels seemed to deteriorate and the price you pay does not justify the [-]repeated[/-] content! Just bought myself a TTV decoder and will be giving them a chance after all its not like DSTV set the bar very high.

Hi

You can find a schedule for 80% of the current offering online- see links below

www.onastra.co.za - all links to the channels are outlined here including Silver (looks great) Showtime, Natura and Fox Retro etc etc-another great way to learn about the channels is to do a Wikipedia search on the international ones

You'll notice your TopTV dish is aimed much higher than the DStv one. This means your signal follows a much shorter path through the clouds to Sirius 4 than on Intel 7/10. That's the reason why your signal last's longer for TopTV.

I want everyone to have faith give them until end of the year and you won't be sorry. Trust me they've enough financial back-up they need Ses Sirius are majority share holder of ODM/TopTv, just the problem it takes time to bid for new channel a lengthy process that doesn't happen over night - Just remember if you go to ses sirius website and few channels you won't see a lot of English Channels.

I don't know hey, the quality of the shows and movies worries me

I am also a bit worried that they may be under estimating the sophistication of the South African TV viewer. Regardless of LSM level, South Africans are generally used to watching shows that are quality-ish and relatively new.

I feel that the Fox channels are totally inadequate and are missing their mark. They do not come up to standard and are basically a mash of shows. No real thought or understanding of what it is the SA viewer really wants has gone into compiling these channels. Fox Entertainment is too muddled and the promise of Fox FX looks set to disappoint. It is definitely NOT Fox FX that is broadcast in the UK. As for Silver and Showtime, they are shockingly weak in their offering. Their movies are of a very low grade. They are seriously underestimating the SA viewer. Bsically insulting. They have the Most work to do to get their act together.

I do believe that for a start, TopTV has done a fantastic job. They will have to look very hard and deep very soon at their program offering if they want to grow and keep viewers. They will definitely have to approach FOX and get them to realise that their channels need LOTS of work to be attractive to the choosy SA viewer.

It is all about quality. Regardless of the age of the tv series or movie, it must be palatable. There is some good stuff I have never seen like Underbelly coming up that I will watch, but rehashing old SABC shows like relic hunter for pay tv subscribers is presumptuous. Please TopTv do not insult us. No more old SABC shows.

But I will still support TopTV. I believe they will get things right and increase their channel offering. The documentaries and music channels are good. It is definitely value for money and better than SABC. It just needs some tweeking.

Competition Rules.

Toptv hasnt even been active a full month, multichoice has had years to fix their problems, and they had many problems. give toptv a few months to work through the flaws. user feedback is what they need now to perfect their product.

Ok where the hell do i start like every1 else yes they starting out so the benefit of the doubt is TopTV's with not so up to date content. But 1stly lets start with the initial launch which was at the end of the month which coincided with a winter rush for a a Makro lcd tv frenzy. They could have sold much more but as makro pointed out they didn't have any info as to installation procedures so had to hold back decoder sales. They didn't bother havin a live link set up in makro as for potential customers to actually see what on offer. So where marketing is concerned it is appalling think about it with makro havin a feeding frenzy on low priced lcd tv's im sure ppl would have taken decoders as well and being mnth end go figure.

Now for my personal Top**** i bought my Top**** decoder 10th May phoned the call centre the 12th, had to phone thrice before i didn't get an engage tone. I did eventually get through after 25 plus min's i went through the process with call centre agent. Got sms stating various installers to contact which i did. Installer was quite good said could only accomodate me on the 13 May, they however phoned me the 12th to notify me they can do it the 12th :-)

Well well installer came did a spendid job hooking drilling wiring etc etc, I asked about activation which is sms activated like was told by call centre and salesman at Makro and was warned it could take 30min to about hence about 2hrs max.

So it is exactly 24hrs still NO, NADA, ZILCH, ZERO, VOKOL Top**** showing on my tv funny when i woke up i phoned the call centre but at 8H02 the call centre gave off and engaged tone phoned at 9h10 still engaged ph at 9H40 still engage hence this is a call centre, at 10H10 finally got through but was on hold for 20 odd mins eventually gave up. Phoned at 13H40 engaged tone again at 14H03 still engaged at 14H40 u got it.

Gave up phoned at 15H40 was waiting for 22min and was eventually prompted to leave a message which i am hoping will be returned in this century still. When i tried at 17H10,17H20,17H27,17H45 it was back on the engaged tone.

So i guess i bought into having myself a nice dish, decoder and a free 20mtr cabling all as a conversation piece for those inquisitive friends wanting to know whether i got Top**** or Dstv

Early adopter pain. I would like to say thank you for feeling the pain so that I don't have to in 6 months time when I sign up ;)
