Official Afrihost Q&A Thread

Yeah it's times like this i wish ACTA would hurry along, and our culture of freeloaders will be forced off the internet. I refuse to believe that anything legal is being done with 1TB usage a month (Comcast capped US users at 250gb, remember? And those buggers use Hulu and Youtube like nobody's business.)

Personally, I do think that throttling is unfair. If it says 4096 on the box, then that's what should be in the box. If what's in the box is stages of throttling, then that should be clearly advertised, otherwise, it's all just pretenses. That being said, I completely get the fact that there are a big bunch of abusers out there, and we're not yet at a stage where all the new fiber links into the country are fully operational, so these measures do make sense.

But still, even a soft cap of 60GB is quite high, if you're using the service for what it's intended. Maybe Afrihost can work out a way to reward more conservative users, by pushing the soft cap up to 70 or 80GB, if you don't repeatedly rape the network - but that'll all be based on usage response in the next few months.

And bottom line, we're in Africa. I know how everyone loves to rag on all the ISPs for the limited offerings, and Telkom for the slow speeds, but come on guys - we live in a country where slaughtering animals by hand is still considered a right of passage, where our president has something like 6 wives, and it's actually still ok to force little boys to go up to the mountain for initiation. It's a whole different landscape over here, and it'll reflect in everything - including the way our local internet access is run.

Not happy about the news

Just One Question.

Is this all part of the 100% Guarantee  well did offera refund ...so yes.

Want us to fall in love with Afrihost again  Im sure there just might be better things to come but dont hold your breath

So why is my CAPPED, PREPAID so SLOW

Here is my LOCAL speedtest

INTERNATIONAL:

on my PREPAID, CAPPED 384K line with AFRIHOST. PLEASE FIX THIS FIRST then address the UNCAPPED problems. I can't check gmail without having connection failures and no YouTube.

I used to get better pings, batter latency and better speeds (sometimes 42kB/s) with Afrihost 384K capped prepaid offer. I am now burning my remaining GB and moving back to TELKOMISP--yes, might as well sleep with the devil I know.

Just for interest's sake:

If you have a 4Mbps account and you are downloading well seeded torrents (meaning you use full speed available to you) this is what your April will look like:

Your 1st cap will kick in at 20:48 on April 1 (assuming you start counting from midnight)
Your 2nd cap will kick in at 08:01 on April 5
Your 3rd cap will start 06:27 on April 12
Your 4th cap will start at 12:23 on April 21 and by April 30th you will have managed to download 130.26GB

I see that the best speed I ever get on well seeded torrents is about 420kB/s and I assumed that the same reduction would apply as your speeds got reduced.

Assuming you reduce your speed of downloads to 1mbps from the beginning of the month you will get even less, only 127GBs total for the month ...

I started with Afrihost on a capped 3Gb account on a 384kb line. Not having issues there, and only really need extra Gigs when the latest Ubuntu distro is released.

Reading through most of this thread, the issue is people wanting to download the internet. AH's uncapped product was never, afaik, advertised as unthrottled. Admittedly they should have mentioned the throttling from the beginning, which would have prevented almost all the complaints I have seen. That is the only mistake I see that AH made here.

Call me a fanboy if you like, but I will stay with them for the foreseeable future. As with any new product, there will always be teething problems. A good analogy is when a new aircraft is built, the first few buyers are essentially beta testers, and assist the manufacturer in ironing out any issues that may crop up. Buyers of the same aircraft five years later won't have as many issues, as they have been sorted out already.

As this is a tech forum, maybe a better analogy is the release of an OS, either from MS or Ubuntu. The first releases have issues, but after a month or so of updates, the OS is generally stable.

That said, no one was forced to take up AH's uncapped offering 5 seconds after it was released, and besides them not clarifying the whole throttling thing, I don't see the issue with it. Move to another ISP if AH don't meet your requirements, geez, and stop crying like babies.... I thought this forum had an 18+ age restriction.

Yep, since and just prior to them introducing "uncapped", my connections have been erratic to, constant refreshes and struggling to work with gmail. There is more to this than meets the eye. Some albeit have been lucky, that's all!

0.32mbps == 327kbps. What exactly is the problem?

Download speed is : 327/8*1024 = 41856bytes/ps = 40.8Kbytes/ps download speed <----if that is a 4Meg line - it is sub par....

Once you've all moved, we hopefully end up being able to use about 100GB of data/month, which would keep me very happy, as it's about R5/GB.

Your ignorance is staggering - this will be my last response to you as you have clearly decided to completely ignore everything that has been said before this in the forum. Good luck with that mindset in the workplace.

Simple lesson i have learnt by dealing with people like you. Never argue with an idiot they drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

The definition is "Fanboi" - also a bit of a hypocrite.

He's been groomed to bend over and take it by SA companies.

Gian's email to all afrihost users on the 24th March:

Is this a truly uncapped service? Are there
any catches? Can I really use as much as I want?

Unless you literally move hundreds of GBs per month
this service will be uncapped for you with no catches
for you

The vast majority of our Uncapped clients will be able
to use as much as they want.

One of pitbullz clones throwing a hissy

Actually I was in agreement with the AUP. I know why its needed and I was totally fine with it.
I emailed Afrihost about it and Oscar is looking into it.

I don't like it when people change the rules so often to suit them it ends up confusing the rest of the players / users.
Its not really fair.
Thats all and I am ticked off.

So sorry but no clone and no pitbull.

Except that it's a 384k line, as per his original post. Meaning that it's performing pretty much exactly as it should.

The losers downloading torrents is messing it up for the rest of us. Go get your illegal ***** somewhere else, or better yet, stop complaining for being capped when you are downloading illegal software/movies or as some guys state it "the whole internet"
It clearly stated that if you are planning on downloading 24/7 this is not the product for you. Afrihost should block all ports that torrent programs run on, that would be great. I got uncapped so that whenever I want to download new beta software from MS I can, and never have to worry that a 4GB beta download would screw me for the rest of the month. I thought I would be using between 30-60 GB a month, now it seems I will be throttled because of all you losers. Thanks, hope you all die!

1) The 4 items in my torrent que are LEGAL for me to download.
2) My computer isnt downloading anything during the day - I am at the office.
3) hoping people die - really?

Quick question, if i downgrade my Uncapped back to me 3Gb capped account now, will i get the money refunded for April?
I don't want a refund for march as i did use the bandwidth they provided, just don't think 60Gb will be enough :-/. (sounds greedy but now that i have uncapped i have found uses for my bandwidth)
