Official Afrihost Q&A Thread

So monkey you don't think 60gb will be enough so you want to downgrade to 3gb?

I am not sure i quite understand the logic involved there. You will get a refund.

Going to Mweb/axxess , 3Gb is for gaming ;-)

I like Afrihosts capped accounts, always had great latency and speed with them.

Hey, now that I think about it, doesn't Rendier have 120TB of storage at his house? Can't he put that online so that we don't have to download the same stuff over and over again from intl servers?

Gotta love how people automatically assume anyone using more than 60GBs is downloading illegal stuff.

Itunes / youtube / streaming music / legal torrents / updates for games (wow) / STEAM games (last one I DLed was 10 gigs) can EASILY break 60 gigs a month.
So everyone please get off the ILLEGAL DOWNLOADS idea.
I was one of the guys that thought the 200g AUP was totally fair on a 4 meg line and close to the rest of the world.

AH started changing the rules and adding throttle after they have signed a bunch of people up and thats no cool. Thats all I am saying. I am not downloading the interwebs.

So how do i go about changing package?
Can't do it on the website :-/.

And i agree with the comment above. Steam games eat bandwidth O_O

THIS IS SOO HEAVY OF YOU AFRIHOST!!!

I mean consumers PAY for an advertised speed of 4096kbps on uncapped and then they decrease your speed just because you make use of the reason we got uncapped at the first place.

And no, I'm not talking about News servers and Torrents - That I can understand that there's a reason being shaped - 10000 users all downloading at 420kb/s will put a strain on the networks but then atleast dont shape too much. Just enough to prevent a network strain.

But the point is, you are taking things too far. 4mbps users can’t even stream Youtube videos properly; International Radio/Audio streaming buffering and just horrible overall browsing experience.

Now they say get an additional capped account for gaming to improve latency, but WHY buy a capped product if you already pay for an uncapped service??????
The reason I actually want uncapped is not to touch my router settings / username (switching local-international / shaped-unshaped accounts). It’s just a pure hassle!!!

WHY CANT WE IN SOUTH AFRICA HAVE A PROPER AFFORDABLE INTERNET SERVICE WITHOUT CATCHES AND LIMITS??

Thank You

Well said 60 gig limit is stupid if it was 80 gig or 100 gig i would be fine with it but i will see how it goes on the first month then i will deiced what i want to do.

This is definately now false advertising in my opinion.

The product is (in my case) sold as a 4mbit/s uncapped service... Reducing my line speed to 128kbit/s hardly equivalates to 4mbit/s. I'm just going to say I'm very, very dissapointed. This was the first, and the last time, I will ever use AfriHost. If this is how you go about changing things left, right, and center while leaving your customers in the dark - I don't want to be part of it, regardless of how good/bad your packages are.

Glad I cancelled, signed up with MWEB, and -extremely- happy. They are delivering EXACTLY what they are claiming...

PS: Given how this now actually works - why bother selling uncapped services at different speeds? Surely, they will all eventually get reduced to the same speed.... One uncapped account for all

Gian,

Not that I support throttling, but if you are going to introduce it, you should have put more thought into it. Rather have a rolling daily or weekly threshold. As things stand April on Afrihost Uncapped is going to look like this:

In Week 1, Light and regular users will suffer because heavy downloaders will not be throttled and the pipe will be heavily congested.
In Week 2, Light and regular users will be suffering less. Heavy users will be getting throttled. The pipe will be moderately congested.
In Week 3, Light users will be fine. Regular users will be getting throttled. Heavy users will be heavily throttled. The pipe will be underutilized.
In Week 4, Light users will be fine. Regular users will be heavily throttled. Heavy users will strangled. The pipe will be hugely underutilized.

Does this make sense to you? To me it seems like a formula for ticking off the maximum number of users for the maximum amount of time. And not very bright at all.

Makes sense.

Well I'm definitely flaming some crybabies...

Look at it this way:

Afrihost has been the trend-setter over the past couple of months. - I dare you to contradict me?
Axxess=s Express accounts were also ground-breaking to a certain extent - for the super-high-end user...

Now:

1 - Either MWEB has been able to buy a part of Seacom/whatever for an amount cheaper than Afrihost (IS) can. OR
2 - MWEB is more efficient than Afrihost (meaning a smaller amount of staff per customer, better admin-skills etc etc) OR
3 - Afrihost wants to make abnormal profit, more than MWEB is making. (The R29/GB deal contradicts that IMO)
4 - Afrihost has a more demanding user-base than the current MWEB base, thus deeming them to throttle accounts earlier than MWEB has to.
5 - MWEB is really awesome, more efficient, and can under-cut all other ISP's in SA, and they are simply the foshizzle... (The past 10 years suggest the opposite. taking nothing away from their awesome offerings of last week...)

If it's #5, I'll eat my words and apologize to the moaners.

BUT: I think it's #4, and the hibernating "normal" users are yet to awaken... Once they do, MWEB will HAVE to instill limits like Afrihost... So the hogs should capitalize as long as they can.

I see Afrihost and to a certain extent WA's viewpoint of the SA situation, and think that while the current move is definitely ground-breaking in SA,it will need to be phased in gradually, and solutions should be developed for the super-high-end users...

For 95% of ADSL users in SA, 30GB is theoretically uncapped... And the current step forward is for them, not (and I flame again), the either- addicted pr0n-aholics or -downloaders of illegal content... (You can only download so much Linux-distro's...)

I rest my case, plz cry further, as a lot of us are rather liking the comic relief...

second decent comment in this entire thread.

Your ignorance is staggering - this will be my last response to you as you have clearly decided to completely ignore everything that has been said before this in the forum. Good luck with that mindset in the workplace.

Simple lesson i have learnt by dealing with people like you. Never argue with an idiot they drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

You and xrapidx should buy each other a box of tissues :D Move on and go to mweb.

I have a 5gb account with telkom and used roughly 10gb with afrihost each month. This has cost me so far roughly R450pm. Now I pay R497 for 60gb. I cant really complain. Yes, it was wrong of AH to not mention the hidden terms. But Gian has come clean. Respect.

I think we should praise all isp's for moving into the right direction but insetad there is soo much whining.

There are other ways on how to still download torrents with full speed once you have hit 30gb. For eg. I have dedicated box in the US. I pull the torrents to the server (sometime up to 5-8mb per sec.) Then from there I download via http with full speed ;) 30gb-60gb issue sorted. Atleast for me.

Afrihost, keep the good work up. I have faith. Maybe just mention all hidden terms from the beginning.

Guys things will improve bit only once afrihost start signing up thousands of moms and pops. Mweb is living with that luxury at the moment, which means for afrihost to compete they would have to throw millions in the bin every month.

I can live with them trying to keep their business afloat. But they need to address two issues.

1. It should be a daily limit rather than a monthly one. This will mean you can correct speed issues by waiting a day.

2. They need to incentivise users into downloading after hours. We want grace periods or something similar.

I agree that Steam games are heavy (I used 12gb in one day just pulling down the few I own). However, games that weigh ~10gb generally cost between $30 and $50, so if you're pulling 300GB a month in Steam games that's R6'500-R11'000/month in gaming spend.

If you have that much money, you can surely afford a much better internet connection.

Also, yes, it's crap that even on a 4mbps line you still need to wait for streaming service (YT, Grooveshark, etc) to buffer. At this point that's the only thing I'd want Afrihost to sort out - that the first 60GB goes at least at 80% of the advertised speed, most of the time.

And then legal torrents, right. What legal torrents? OS downloads? At 3gb an OS, that's 20/month before you hit your first throttle. Do you reformat and reinstall your PC every day? What do you do with all the windows-only Steam games you spend R6k+ a month on? Are there even that many major OSes out there?

Anime and other unobtainable media (UK/US shows, etc)? Aren't they somewhere in SA already, on faster, local bandwidth? Did you know that the first 4 seasons of Doctor Who (55 episodes) only weighs 20gb? At a 256kbps bitrate, you can stream video for the whole month (all 86400 seconds of every day) and only use 82gb. How could you possibly watch all of that while constantly reformatting your PC with new OSes and fretting about the Steam games you can no longer play?

You have to admit that there aren't really a lot of legitimate reasons to pull hundreds of gigs a month.

To wipe up the laughter tears when you guys start bitching in a month or two when harder restrictions are applied without notice?

I don't know if you've noticed, probably not, because of the reading ability many lack on MyBB - there aren't just two people who are pissed at this.
