Official Afrihost Q&A Thread

SA has the worst consumers on the planet. You can feed them schit and they will be happy ;)

Geezuz i know, we all got so excited by hearing 200gb now it's 30gb and people are actually defending it. Maybe i should start offering 1gb uncapped shaped and throttled accounts i would make some serious money :D.

if mweb had a voice on myBB, would be great to see how much they would throttle you. Was a big AH fan, dont know so much anymore. 30gb is nothing and i am not even downloading any torrents or movies etc.

I guess we have to wait and see.

Had Mweb on the phone at around 4pm - they say it definitely isn't close to 30GB.

i just hit 105gig on my mweb account:P and running full speed still (and no its no illegal, im mirroring the gentoo portage locally for fun)

Dude that's just sick :s How many GB's for the whole mirror?

Err read threads much? its called the mweb Q&A thread. :)

Let me explain to you in little words. It is one of those clauses that they add to a contract that they don't expect anyone to follow but it lets them target specific individuals when it suits them. Thats a cop out in my book. It's just an escape clause.

ou obviously have never met a lawyer, you just explained to a T, exactly why these clauses have been added.

there is a very obvious difference between shaping excessive usage and throttling an uncapped account to one quarter of its line speed after a mere 60gb usage. 60gb is not excessive on a 4Mb line, not by any stretch of any imagination. What happened to "200 gigabytes" and then "hundreds of gigabytes"? And it is not just certain protocols that will be heavily shaped, but the entire line throttled. There was nothing in the FAQ or product description about throttling the line speed.

well i'm going into "really dont give a @#$% mode" on this i have got 2 lines 4mb lines so i'll just run the wife on the afrihost account then reinstate my 4mb axxess express fible account ,
after a "long" weekend of remote ssh en winscp and constant "timeouts" , im getting a little g@tvol, its one thing if your account slows down it another when you test a second account on that same line and it functions correctly.

i do admit that Gian and the team are doing what they can to improve there new "baby" and will prove that they will improve dramaticly on this new front , as a wug leader i know how demanding ppl can be.

But is also true that when you let a few data hungery SA Guy/Girl loose on an "uncapped" account shaped or not , they will push it to that max as i did on my first uncapped experiance ( only 903GB ^^ will never forget that month )

Gian & Team please keep up the good work and hopefully some i'll close my axxess acount and move to one of your account for all my doings but for now i'll let the wife play with her new AH toy.

Let me start of by saying that I'm HUGE fan of Afrihost, and solute them for EVERYTHING they have done to get us here....uncapped products everywhere. Face it, if it weren't for their R29 per GIG...uncapped products would be upon us now.

Kudos to Gian for his honesty

But i believe your problem lies here....

Initially you will be getting our standard service. (i.e.
certain ports are shaped somewhat and web and email are
prioritised.)

After you have moved 30 GBs you will be moved into a
different category whereby certain ports will be shaped
more aggressively. However, web and email will still be
prioritised.

After moving a total of 60 GBs you will be moved into a
different category where your line speed is throttled to
1024 kbps per second and certain shaping protocols are in
place.

After moving a total of 90 GBs then you will be moved
into a category where you will be throttled to 512 kbps.
Certain shaping protocols will also be in place here.

After moving a total of 120 GBs you will be moved into a
category where your line will be throttled to 386 kbps.
Certain shaping protocols will also be in place here.

After moving a total of 150 GBs you will be moved into a
category where you are throttled to 128 kbps.

You will never be capped.

The problem with this method is your experience will degrade as the month goes by. Like previous posters say, i pay R413 + R131:mad: per month for 4MB service....and with a degrading service as the month go by is seriously NOT LEDGEND...wait for it....ARY...;)

I for one like to go youtube or movies.com, watch a few vids, in decent quality once every few days. This alone would amount to 30GIG....especially if you stream IPL from youtube....then you go well over that. I believe that alot of users are getting punished for others "abuse".

I think you guys should bring back the 100 or 200GIG FUP.....and if you hit this soft cap...then do the throttling/shaping....

Also, if you guys decide going this route, you HAVE to change the name of the account, do not call it UNCAPPED....

I still think paying R499 for 100GIG data....R4.99 per GIG isn't bad

P.S With 8/10/12MB ADSL on the cards, the current situation will get even worse

How will this work for 384kb users? Do we also get our speeds slowed after a certain usage amount?

Honest question:

What are you doing that requires more then 50GB on average for an average user on a monthly basis.

Really happy everything has been cleared up.I'll still be staying with Afrihost as i only download about 23Gb's a month, and thats more than enought to satisfy my needs, plus its alot cheaper than the 20Gb account i had with them :)

Get a suitable business account.

Ok, if you have nothing constructive to add except your own opinion, please don't voice it.

That was but one simple example of the types of data usage I have in my house. My house itself uses bandwidth with things being monitored and that data being pushed up to a server I host elsewhere so that I can access it from anywhere.

Do you want to pay for the account so that I can do all of these types of things? hmmmm.. I thought not.

Only if you throttle to almost modem speeds! :)

you obviously have never met a lawyer, you just explained to a T, exactly why these clauses have been added.

If any of you wonder why ISP's take so long to answer, it is simply because they need a lawyer 24/7 to advise them on the legal impact of what they say. This is because of all the omg I run to ASA now threads and comments...

Here are a few things...

1) HD content streaming
2) Audio streaming
3) Monitoring systems
4) Work related database stuff as well as personal database related stuff
5) Media Center aggregating (not series and movies downloading, but meta data etc etc etc)
6) Pushing photos onto the net.

Thats just a small portion of the stuff that happens in my house.

Will you pay for it? Then I will be glad to. The promise was for people not abusing with 100's of GB's (that insinuates 200 or more). This was not the case. I average 4GB per day - some days I will 100MB others I will do 18GB - depends on what I am working on. I do not require prioritized traffic, I do not require torrent access, I do not do massive wasteful usage. So tell me why should I have a business account and not the one that promised to deliver to my exact needs?

Don't how how to tell you this, you use volume for business, can you guess what the business account caters for?
