Exactly my question, seeing that is what this thread is for??? Idiots. I'm also curious to the 384 situation? Also, is it available as yet? need to sign up and change my capped option.
 
Seems I will have to put on my flame-retardant suit before I post in this thread.

I can see how some people would be happy with Afrihost's current offering. I can also understand that some people feel they were decieved, those complaints are not entirely without merit.

One of the ways to address this going forward would be for Afrihost to offer two different services. The current offering can stand for those that wish to use 20-30GB but have little shaping during the day. I am one of those interested in this as I am sure many others are.

The second service can be more heavily shaped during the day but lesser so at night with no thresholds or throttling for usage. This seems to be what all the other ISPs are offering and should appease the heavy users.

This would add some complexity to their management sure, but it is one way to avoid the "one size fits all" model which is obviously not to everyones satisfaction.

Just thought I'd try to add something constructive, it is not a question but perhaps an answer posed as a suggestion.
 
I think this is great. Sure many "power" users will be upset, but so what. Most of them are messing up the experience for the rest of us by downloading illegal content anyway. I like the transparency and honesty that Gian and Afrihost display. Let all the complainers go to MWEB and us at Afrihost will enjoy a better Internet experience.

I'm sure that if all Afrihost uncapped users display a mature and responsible attitude in usage then in time Afrihost will find that they can loosen some of the throttling. This seems to me to be a necessary response to the grab-all attitude that has accompanied these cheap uncapped accounts.

So use it responsibly for legal content and we'll all see a better experience!

I'm also interested in the 384k question. Will the 384k accounts be subject to different restrictions?

I think the 4MB restrictions probably apply to the other lines as well - its more about the 4MB connections having the apparent power to do some serious damage.

if i had to go into the 30 -60 gig bracket and shaping gets more restictive will international gaming ports (specifically WOW ) be shaped ???
This is definately a dealbreaker for me .

Anime and other unobtainable media (UK/US shows, etc)? Aren't they somewhere in SA already, on faster, local bandwidth? Did you know that the first 4 seasons of Doctor Who (55 episodes) only weighs 20gb? At a 256kbps bitrate, you can stream video for the whole month (all 86400 seconds of every day) and only use 82gb. How could you possibly watch all of that while constantly reformatting your PC with new OSes and fretting about the Steam games you can no longer play?

You have to admit that there aren't really a lot of legitimate reasons to pull hundreds of gigs a month.

DIRT - got it on steam for 9.99 usd 10+ gigs
Itunes movies DLed one the other day 3 gigs. sometimes more if nice super HD
Legal torrents (wow uses torrents to patch as well) last set of patch I dled was over 8 gigs / Plenty of stuff I use for work and school gets distributaed via torrents like education videos from lynda.com (I also stream here)
AI files / Graphics files for print and web design - I work on countless web projects with people all over the globe. We share files via FTP and those Adobe files can be 1 gig per site EASY. And thats 3 or 4 times a day since there is collaboration.

TO summarize its not about WHAT people are using the bandwidth for. I am all for shaped.
I want my email / websites / work stuff to go fast during work hours.

But uncapped (hundreds of gigs per month then you might get spoken to) TO throttled at 60 gigs is a big step
Heck I am an AH Fanboy - I want them to come right.

Yeah, maybe *you* can legally justify needing 100's of gb a month, but there are many that simply have no excuse.

And I completely agree - I at least want to get everything I pay for during business hours. It's pretty much the only reason I have 4mbps, so I can work from home effectively. Hopefully this sort of throttling will work towards that.

Once upon a time when I was young and stupid I did. Heck I even ran an illegal movie server at work for select employees.... That doesn't justify it. It's illegal! End of story!

I changed my ways a few years back. Perhaps with age came wisdom...I don't know.

Today I do not have a single illegal movie, mp3 or piece of software on my machine. If I can't buy it, I do with out it!
 
Here's a solution - use two accounts - if you absolutely have to get speed, just get a 29 per gig account after your 60 gigs or whatever is up, and tone down a bit. You will still get the best value for money, way better than most things you would have gotten a month ago.

While I agree with the sentiment this line suggests that you are not falling within the accepted user profile for these accounts. These accounts are not for business use. Pay more, get a business uncapped if you're concerned about your work usage, and you won't have to worry about this shaping...

Just need clarity and to steer away from speculation. That's what caused this mess in the first place and continues to stir dissension.
 
if i cancel my account will i still have my client zone log in?or if i want to move back at a later stage i have to re register?

This is another point people miss. The mweb offering for business is over R2k p/m.

Afrihost do not mention "business" anywhere but from what some have posted, they are clearly conducting business over a R400 package and complaining it's not the same as a R2k service :confused:

I think Afrihost put a reasonable system in place, yes it's inferior to Mweb [or Mweb just is not on the ball enough to realise what's hitting them, they might found out in 3 months that everyone has been destroying their revenue] , but hey, it's not like someone is holding a gun to your head.

Brilliant post and so true.

Gian has said they have messed up and apologised; he has offered unconditional refunds to people (who will have then enjoyed many free gigs); he has explained this is a work in progress and still people bring up the same old stories. What more do you want him to do - reasonably that is ??
