Official Afrihost Q&A Thread

Guys, send the word "Help" to 32541 and an Afrihost consultant will phone you back. They person I dealt with didn't seem to be aware of the issue and has told me he will contact me shortly once he finds out. Hopefully this will help us get to the bottom of it.

Scratch that, the support guys I spoke to are equally useless and simply linked me to the Afrihost page that explains their throttling (lies)

Well only used 5Gb so far this month and I did notice there was some speed issues yesterday and day before but seems fine now.

I really wish Gian would say something. I've cancelled my uncapped with them but still have a prepaid and 1GB account. This silence and speculation is making me very uneasy.

A simple and honest post to let us know what is going on would be a great help to stop us from worrying and wondering.

Why??? He only sold us a lot of lies! All because he wanted AH to be on top and now they losing subscribers by the day.... MWeb here I come!

Thanks for the XLS spreadsheet, made for some interesting reading. I am a little confused though, does the first throttling threshold kick in at 30GB or 60GB?

My 4mb line was fine for the first 4 days of this month (I had downloaded 5GB by then) and was horribly restricted to 5kbps thereafter. When I called AH to complain my line speed jumped back up to 450kbps...... for a few days and now I only get 350kbps after downloading an additional 15GB....

If I can get an answer to this it may sway me to move to Mweb then....

I've had the same issue, so I contacted Afrihost about it. After 30gb, my HTTP downloads were suffering, and the support tech couldn't explain why. They were able to fix it temporarily, but it collapsed back to sub-1mbps after midnight. I'm guessing that there's something at fault with their throttling limits - because you're only supposed to be throttled after 60GB.

I've looked here, and at the official MWEB Q&A Thread, and I'm hoping someone from the MWEB boat can clarify this:

From what I've been reading, MWEB operates on their own network (and isn't entirely bound by IS), actually responds to MyBB posts, and so far, hasn't suffered from authentication errors, dropped connections, or widescale, draconian throttling (at least not at the same frequency as Afrihost) - and this is after doing well over 60GB in 4mbps downloads. Their 4mbps offering is only marginally more expensive (R539 - R497 == R42), and apparently they've cleaned up their signup process.

If any of that's false, let me know, because I'm seriously considering switching to MWEB at the end of this month. As much as I can understand the pressures Afrihost are facing, it really doesn't excuse a sub-quality product.

Sounds about right - I'm only on the 512 free account, so can't really comment on 4MB speeds... although, being the ever pessimist, I think if the IS based ISPs don't manage to clean-up their acts, and eventually throw in their towels - MWEB might then apply some limitations (after they've won)

I sent a email querying my current download speed of 8kb/s... this is my reply....

" Hi there

Trust you are well :)

Thank you for the mail. I see that you have already moved
20GB on your 384kbps DSL account. On the current account
once you have moved more than 10GB you start getting
throttled. So you have been throttled twice already
which will explain the line speed you are experiencing.
Hope this answers your question.

Thank you and take care :)
Have a great day & please feel free to let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Warm regards.

Shakeel "

That is absolutely pathetic! They are saying the first throttling happens at 10gig!!

It is not an uncapped account, it is a progressively throttled account, and it should be advertised as such.

i'm on 43gb and utorrent is useless..browsing is barely there...
going to mweb in may...

AH turning to to be DC!

never would have upgraded if the AuP was what it is now..

when i signed, it was 200gb limit not 30 gb...

Good grief, their terms and conditions are changing by the hour.

Throttled at 10GB. Yowser, it's getting "better and better". LOL @ uncapped.

Just spoke to Afrihost support engineer. IS is having major issues on their backbone. He will contact me back as soon as he has more info.

Surely you guys must have thought something was wrong when they went from 200gb down to 60 then 30 now 10 LOL

Wow crazy stuff, 10gb's!!!!!!!!! No man that is flippin criminal. Next week 1gb? Then what throttled from the start?

I am a 384k user, and I only went from 10Gb to uncapped after 1 April, so I have two bars on my connectivity indicator, but I paid my R290 for the month, and have used 8.5Gb so far, so waiting to see what happens when I get to 10GB. If I get throttled then that is useless to me. I do not need 100Gb or 200GB. I need 20-25GB a month (half play half work), and it looks like I am going to be frustrated. I am playing fair but Afrihost are not. Why is their issues with a 200GB downloader now going to affect the rest of us who are not abusing the system.

OR is 10GB, down from 200GB now considered abuse?!? I kept my mouth shut when many were complaining about 200GB limits, and even the 30GB limit was fine with me. But 10GB!
The name "uncapped" must seriously now be dropped. It is totally misleading. They can not even bring up "Fair Usage Policies" now, because they are the ones being completely unfair.
This account is now running much like the original IS packages where when you reached a cap, you were throttled.

I was looking through a FAQ of theirs just this afternoon, and it said there were no throttling plans for 384 and 512k users at this stage. Did they implement this new policy at their Saturday afternoon meeting? Surely if a company is going to change it's T&C it should do this for already paid up subscribers at the beginning of the month? There should be protection for clients who have handed over money for at the beginning of a payment period that they will get the service they have paid for as stipulated in the T&C.

Surely there is some consumer laws being broken here?
