OFFICIAL HTC Desire Thread

had the invisible shield on my phone since day one, that was over a year ago. Its started peeling on the edges and has a few "impressions" in it. After using a friends phone without a screen protector it was much smoother and not nearly as sticky, a) do i really need a screen protector? b) Is the invisible shield just a marketing ploy with how scratch resistant it really is? I dont worry what i put in my pocket if my phone is in it.
 
As mentioned in another thread when I took mine off it was like getting a new phone all over again. This was after being pressured to do so by my friend who had done the same and I eventually did and don't regret it one bit! My coworker actually has the desire with a "cheap" screen protector and it actually feels a lot nicer, not as "sticky". I keep my keys and phone in same pocket and the screen is still perfect.

I think you do need one. It's not like the desire has gorilla glass.

I use a cheap R10 one that I change every few months. No complaints. I have used the invisible shield and it is too sticky.

Yeah, also using the invisible shield currently. Not the best. I played around on a naked Desire the other day and it felt a lot more responsive than my protected one...
 
any idead where in Cape Town I can get a cheap invisble shield for my Desire?

I've tried Vangate Mall and Canal Walk - no stock :cry:

The very expensive Invisible Shield? I've said before that as far as I'm concerned you can't beat Gadgetshieldz - same materials, just a lot cheaper. R50 postage included, made in India. You need a credit card but I've used them for years. Application requires a couple of drops of baby shampoo in a small bowl of water and you hardly notice it.
 
I've been plagued with crashing applications for a while now, most notably Peep which I use a lot and is really flaky at the moment, but others too. From an error message recently on another app it may be Java related. Any idea how to fix the Java on my Desire? I'm on 2.2, but no updates are available (MTN unbranded).
 
Last one for tonight. I've also said before that while the GPS map system I use is NDrive, it had one failing in common with a couple of others I tried (Garmin excluded but it's not available on Android) was the lack of a night mode. Basically, the lighting gets reversed, so the background goes dark and the streets go light. Blow me down but on Friday NDrive did it automatically as soon as it started getting dark. I don't use GPS a lot, so that feature might have been there a little while but must have been updated at some time that I'm unaware of. Anyway, it's sweet.

Well only way I can think of is to root and flash a different rom or maybe try a factory reset 1st maybe its something else that is interfering.

All of them that I used had nigh modes, including the free ones like Google navigation, Navdroyd and Osmand+
 
Thanks to the guys at Revolutionary (http://revolutionary.io/) is now possible to root you Desire again if you upgrade to the official 2.3.3 download. Rooted with Revolutionary last night and flashed my Desire to the latest MIUI rom :D Big smiles all the way.

For it's faults, I'd rather stick with the bog-standard Android. I haven't rooted mostly because of the time it would take to research and do, although I must say it's very tempting because of the memory limitations on the phone itself. Uggh to a factory reset, but it may have to come to that. It might be time to test that cloud backup ...

Not too bad. Download the revolutionary program and new HTC usb drivers. (You need to give them your phones serial to get an installation code that you need for the root process.

If you have HTC sync on your pc, uninstall it. Install the downloaded HTC usb drivers.

Connect the phone. (Charge only, debugging mode on)

Run the revo utility. It will ask your to enter the installation code you got earlier, and then reboot your phone. Just be patient untill the phone reboots by itself. There you go! One s-off Desire. SORRY I FORGOT THE FOLLOWING

GO to http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/revolutionary and download the su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip file. Look for the following line to find it:

Does Revolutionary give me root?
No. You will need to flash this zipfile from recovery.


Now get Rom Manager from the market, and use it to download the rom you want to flash (it has links to all the popular roms). Back up your current rom if you want, and flash the newly downloaded rom via the Rom manager menu.

Everything went perfectly for me, so don't ask me what to do if something goes wrong. :o

Found the following guide at http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Desire_(GSM):_Full_Update_Guide : it is for cyanomod but should work others roms as well

Method via ROM Manager
1.Launch RomManager. Optional: Choose the first option in the app, Flash ClockworkMod Recovery to update to the latest version.
2.Select the Download ROM option from the main menu in the ROM Manager.
3.Select the CyanogenMod option, and then choose the latest version of CyanogenMod from the menu. Optional: When you select the latest version of CyanogenMod, check the Google Apps* option.
4.Once the ROM is finished downloading, it asks if you would like to Backup Existing ROM and Wipe Data and Cache.
5.If Superuser prompts for root permissions check to Remember and then Allow.
6.The HTC Desire (GSM) will now reboot into the recovery, wipe data and cache, and then install CyanogenMod. When it's finished installing it will reboot into CyanogenMod.

I'm reaching the end of my current contract and figure its about time I tried a custom ROM.

Which mod would you recommend for v2.3 (2.3.3?)? And do any of the mods have a similar interface to Sense 3.0?
I know a lot of people are using CyanogenMod, but is there others that you guys prefer?
