I just wish that there was some way to use swype with two fingers in landscape mode. Or a way to say that swype should be used in portrait mode and the IME keyboard in landscape.

Not for me, thanks. I think Swype is totally cool and very usable in landscape, so thanks for the heads up Fudzy. This is going to be a killer app and I wish the guys at Swype all the best. Is this the future of tablet PCs? I think it is. If I was a hardware competitor to Ipad, I'd snap them up now, patent the heck out of their technology and use it in my new (Android?) tablet PC. It's that good.

As usual, when I have a new toy like the Desire, I have lots of questions, most of which I resolve myself. However, I need a bit of advice and maybe this is probably better placed in an MTN forum which I will do now.
The phone likes to go online a lot and will happily use 7-10Mb a day of data a day. I'm on an MTN Anytime 100 package through Nashua, so this will obviously cost me a lot. if I don't do something about it. I will phone them tomorrow to ask about my options, but any help or advice will be gratefully received. Typically, I will get through to a clueless newbie who will fudge his/her way through my questions and I will finish up no wiser. I guess what I want for my my mobile is about 300-500Mb 3G data a month (preferably more) because I want to connect to my home network for certain applications that won't be available at work and which should be kept private. There are ways around corporate restrictions like mounting software on flash drives, but I don't want to go that route, yet.

There will be a changeover period while I extricate myself from the other position, but it needs to be fairly seamless and obviously invisible to my new employer). I might add these are non-competitive industries, just in case you were wondering about conflicts of interest.

what is the most recent date that someone has recieved a HTC Desire from Vodacom? Ive been waiting almost 4 weeks now....

I tried this and it does what it says, I cleared up around 30mb of space on my internal storage. Once a day after installing apps i set my Install Location to 2 and move all of my apps that doesnt have move to SD enabled and revert it back to auto(0) once im done. So far no problems and i have tons of games and apps on my phone currently still have around 40mb available.
No need to root to do this !!! Just dont move any widgets or apps that use run services in the background, when mounting your SD card this could cause some problems.

I got my HTC Desire yesterday and have a few questions. I tried browsing through some of the pages on this thread but there are so many that I could not find the answers.
Firstly, if I root my phone, can I reset to factory settings (hard reset)?
If not, then how do I unroot my phone if this is at all possible?
Secondly, is there anyway of doing the Froyo update on my phone? Could you please tell me how? I have checked for updates on the phone and there is none available (I am with MTN).
And lastly, has anyone else experienced issues with low wireless signal on 2.1?
I would highly appreciate if anyone could help me.

Welcome!
1- If you root your phone and keep the same ROM, then you can factory reset to the original settings for that particular ROM.
2- If you root and flash another ROM, then it overwrites your existing ROM and factory resetting will default the phone to the defaults for that specific ROM.
3- To "Unroot" your phone once rooted can be done by flashing an original HTC Rom.
4- If you root while still on 2.1 and update to 2.2, you will loose the "root" and the ability to root again, unless you "downgrade" your Hboot to 0.82 again, but there are programs out there that claim to be able to root the Desire with the latest HBoot, but I can't say because I haven't used them.
5- The Froyo update can be done without Rooting the phone, there is a link in the first few pages of this thread.
With regards to the signal issue, that is very much related to radio version etc., which you can only upgrade or change once you have rooted, but doing so and it turns out to be an actual problem with the phone hardware itself, could mean that you invalidate your warranty.
I would suggest that you hop over to http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=594 and have a read through all the tutorials there, will help you decide which direction to take with your phone.

Also if I root the phone and then unroot it, will my warranty still be invalid? I mean, will MTN know that I've rooted it previously and therefore my warranty is void?

Frankly, and this is my personal opinion, I would ask why you want to root your phone. It's never easy and takes time. I did some reading on the subject and decided it wasn't worth the effort, unless I really had a good reason. If it's for some functionality you don't feel you get on 2.1 then perhaps look for some easier way to upgrade to 2.2 and then decide. I bought mine cash and the upgrade was available immediately, so Froyo is possibly being held back by MTN for their own reasons (testing, blah, blah). There's probably an easier way around this restriction and at least you keep your phone standard before you start messing with it. I'm on MTN so it's possibly to do with contract phones?

Since getting my Desire I manage all my contacts exclusively in Gmail. When i add new contacts on my phone, i add them a gmail contacts. I load nothing from my phone or facebook etc.
If you want to run all you contacts from Gmail, then clean them up on there, and it will pull the details directly into your desire.

You're a bit late. I've gone over to Swype which is great, but I hear slideit is also good.
how did u get it to work?i've installed swype but just cant activate the keyboard?

activate in settings keyboard and input. Then long press in any input field and select swype as input method. If you see that your swyping doesn't enter a word, you may have to do the same thing and select input method back to the default. Type out any word. And then reselect swype as an input method.
