Official HTC One thread

Full review here : GSMArena

This is what I was talking about. They did a low-light S4 vs HTC One comparison and according to them the S4 is a clear winner. It really boggles the mind though, especially after reading the anandtech review on the HTC One.

Can someone please explain to me why GSMArena and Anandtech are reporting very differernt reviews? Especially on the camera front...

May be biased, or the firmware patch have not been applied yet. I also read this review and they only released the article on the firmware patch update a while later. I think Anandtech reviewed a commercially released phone, where the other reviewed a preview model.

Update:

http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_one_software_update_improves_camera_performance-news-5759.php

Back when we reviewed the HTC One, we were quite pleased with the low-light performance of the camera. However, the daylight performance wasn't quite as good, thanks to the excessive noise in the images.
The issue, of course, was not with the hardware but with the software on the phone. Thankfully, HTC has chosen to fix it in the latest software update, as was discovered by the folks over at HardwareZone.com.
According to their updated review, the HTC One running the newer version of the software provided significantly sharper images than the previous one, especially around the edges. You can see the difference in the image below (more are in the source link).

BTW, WANT ONE!

well if that is true then Im really pissed off. I have always had the utmost respect for gsmarena. I often head straight to them for reviews on a phone to get the full, unbias story.

but honestly, when I read the low-light sections of both reviews I begin to question the validity of gsmarena.

GSMArena low light section

Anandtech low light section

edit : my biggest gripe right now is that gsmarena dont mention what shutter speed/ISO the pics are in their section of the low light review. Did they use Auto mode? Night mode? It makes a hell of a difference you know...

Just reading the way GSMArena rated the camera was exceedingly biased. Basing everything on resolution, not overall quality.

At equal resolutions, the HTC One kicks even the Lumia and iPhone 5's butts:

I had given up on GSMArena's reviews a long time ago.

I don’t actually get reviews with preview models; there will always be software or hardware issues, but it provides perspective. How many current phones improved after official update releases, nearly all I would say? In the case with flagships, I would really appreciate reviews with commercially available products, in this case the SG4 were also a preview model in regard with the GSMArena review.

I will wait for the final shootout reviews:

Xperia Z vs. One vs. Galaxy 4

Also would like to see some current less known flagships compared to them, like the ZTE Grand S, Huawei Ascend D2 etc.
I am currently waiting on the availability to import an Asus PadFone Infinity.

again, they are shooting in auto format on the HTC One. In low light conditions, it makes sense to adjust all phones to the relative night mode setting, no?

The slower shutter speed and decreased ISO makes a massive difference in the quality of the photo.

I do agree with you, but it is still a more objective review. I did enjoy the thoroughness of the Anandtech review though.

I read Anandtech for the s3/onex and it was as scientific as reviews get. So I'm inclined to go with them, even though my first port of call is gsm. It won't be anymore

Ok so im going through a lot of stuff on the net, comparing sites, and the more I read this GSMArena review the more I think this oke has a different phone, or he is just bias as hell!

The HTC One snaps photos in night mode faster than the Galaxy S4, but they are dark, noisy and there's not a lot of fine detail to be had. On the up side, colors are more accurate.

Brian on Anandtech observed that when shooting with night mode ON, his results were actually a lot better, better light and a lot less noise. This was attributed to the slower shutter speed, which allowed the ISO to be much lower (less noise) of what it was on full auto.

I mean really...

Yes, but GSMArena did the very first review and I’m sure they had a preview model without the firmware patch applied. Also Anandtech I think were the only reviewer with a patched model.

When will the HTC One be released in SA? There is already pre orders for the S4. But I want the One.

Ok , lets say that is true. How can such a big review site (whom a lot of people utilise to decide what phone they going to buy) keep up old, out of date, images on their comparison screen. So what if they cant get their hands on a new production model? They should at least take down the photo's in the meantime until they can ammend the review...

I know they did a follow-up article, but it doesnt quite cut it in my view.

The question is who provided GSMArena with the model and why were not all problems solved for review purposes? Only HTC themselves can be blamed.

Anandtech just did a thorough review, that's all. Places like CNET corroborated Anandtech's measured camera performance.

I lost faith in GSMArena since figuring out that their audio comparisons are rather useless to the consumer.

That's not true. GSMArena's metrics for measurement overly reliant on the megapixel count of photos. Look at the main areas of criticism towards the One's camera:

As you can see, the difference is night and day. There's just not enough resolution in HTC One photos for fine detail and the high amount of noise sure doesn't help. Also defects like over-sharpening halos and purple fringing become pretty obvious. The contrast is punched up a bit too high, and colors are off.

With the software patch, and a better metric for comparison, the HTC One comes off far better.

Shoe! That AnandTech review is the most detailed review i have ever seen in my life!
Once again this phone just seems to tick all the right boxes for me.
Cant wait to get it.

I know this, that is why I posted the GSMArena HTC article on the firmware update:

http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_one_software_update_improves_camera_performance-news-5759.php

I relate to this that everybody reviewed the smartphones in true nature and unbiased and that the HTC One would have performed as per the Anandtech review in the GSMArena review should the patch been applied or made use of a commercially available HTC One. But like I previously said, the GSMArena review could have been biased; most Android fanatics praise and worship the Galaxy line and this is seen throughout many reviews.

Fair enough, however I merely disagreed with the assertion that HTC were to blame for a rather biased approach from GSMArena.

Hello HTC

Whats's going on. Why is there no information on a date when the phone will be available in SA? There are a lots of people waiting for it and with the S4 coming as well, that no communication policy could backfire on HTC.

Naja ... maybe HTC is doing so well that they don't need any more sales.
