Official June tests thread

Wow! I'm so glad that Heyneke picked players on form. I'm so happy for players like Lappies, Willie and other youngsters who deserve to be there but I honestly thought would not be picked.

Very exciting squad!

If Willie gets a cap would he be the first Griquas Springbok?

Now Heyneke must resist the brain fart to play Kirchner and just go with Willie at fullback

And please play Arno Botha and Lappies. Forget about Coetzee, Alberts and Louw.

Love the double header concept!! Will definitely be going...

Couple of players just returning from injury included which is surprising, Bismarck, Alberts, Basson, Eben, Zane (lemon). Even Hougie can consider himself a little lucky (selected maybe for his versatility). I see he's selected Willie as a wing/fullback, Lambie flyhalf/fullback. Tells me he doesn't consider Zane as a banker at 15.

Happy for Lappies, he's deserved it as has Arno Botha!! Neither of those lads will let SA down!! They hardcore, 120% flankers!! Siya been a bit of a spectator this season too, would have gone Brussouw. Where the hell is Schalk?

Trevor? Don't rate him at all, very surprised...

Watched Bakkies playing for Toulouse in the Heineken cup final as well as French Super 14 semi finals. He 's still got it and he would have added huge presents and experience to this squad. Bit disappointed he hasn't been selected tbh... Looking decidedly thin at lock...

Don't think that would be very wise. Alberts and Louw played very well last year and Coetzee wasn't bad either; it would be foolish starting with two uncapped flanks.

Against Italy, Scotland and Samoa he can afford to take a risk or 6...

Locks are concerning. You got Flip who is a walking yellow, Juandre who is great in the lineouts and tight loose but not so great in the close quarters combat. I like cowboys at lock and Juandre's more of a red indian. And then there is DuToit, a promising player but greeeeeen...

Surprised Meyer, who likes bigger players, didn't go for the 2.05m, 125kg Lood De Jager...

Anyway, for Italy, Samoa, Scotland it shouldn't cost us but Rugby Championship is a different proposition...

EDIT: I like that OZ are taking on the Lions before the Rugby Championship. They going to be spent and then some. They don't have the depth to survive injuries to key players in a Lions tour and follow it up with a competitive showing in a competition as brutal as the Rugby Championship... I reckon they'll come 4th out of 4...

I think we all are. The game in SA just about originated in Griqualand West...

Dan Retief recalls the following regarding Swartz and his two tries:

Buddy Swartz, a UCT student whom the Griqua selectors had overlooked until a practice outing against Free State immediately before the Final, scored two spectacular tries, the second by diving straight over the top of a crouching Tonie Roux, almost on the same spot in the right-hand corner; Jannie van Aswegen landed a punch on Johan Spies that rang around the old De Beers Stadium and Peet Smith took over from Piet Visagie and kicked the long-range penalty that made it 11-9 to Griquas.

At the end I sat down on the field, near Buddy’s corner, and waited for the crowd to disperse. Mannetjies Roux had been carried off the field laughing and crying at the same time and an old man with a long beard knelt down in the in-goal area and patted the grass where Swartz had scored: “God die rooinek,” he said, “God die rooinek… nie net een nie, twee… net hier.” Tears streamed out of his eyes and left streaks on his beard; when I left he was still there patting the ground.

ALL BLACKS SQUAD:

Forwards: Dane Coles, Andrew Hore, Keven Mealamu, Wyatt Crockett, Ben Afeaki, Ben Franks, Owen Franks, Tony Woodcock, Brodie Retallick, Luke Romano, Jeremy Thrush, Sam Whitelock, Sam Cane, Steven Luatua, Liam Messam, Kieran Read, Victor Vito, Matt Todd (injury replacement).

Backs: Tawera Kerr-Barlow, Aaron Smith, Piri Weepu, Beauden Barrett, Dan Carter, Aaron Cruden, Ma’a Nonu, Francis Saili, Conrad Smith, Rene Ranger, Israel Dagg, Charles Piutau, Julian Savea, Ben Smith.

6 uncapped players in this group. Thoughts? I'm glad Ranger is there. He's been having a monster season!

Bjorn Basson played for the Springboks in 2010 as a Griquas player.

Really? Why was he playing for the Bulls then, I thought Griquas players only played for the Cheetahs in Super Rugby?
