yup, got a G3 and Im really happy with it.
one thing that allowed me to upgrade so soon, was that I kicked Cell C to the curb. Im done with their *** data coverage.
paid up my Cell C contract and took out a new Vodacom one

I would just never let my phone get to 10% battery. It's cutting too close for me. I get shivers just looking at that screenshot.

I'm quite keen to find out how you rate the build quality, display accuracy and in-hand feel of the G2. I'm mulling getting this to replace my Nexus, as the One M8 is a bit out of my reach at the moment.

Go to a few shops, one of them is bound to have a display unit. Cell C in Bayside mall has/had a display model.

I'm altogether impressed with the G2. Well, except that it arrived with a discoloration on the screen (possibly from shipping) and is currently in for repairs, so I'm back to the S4 till I get it back. But between the G2 and the S4 there really is no comparison for me. The S4 feels flimsy, slow and off-colour. The G2 I gather is basically a Nexus5 without the flaws of the Nexus5 (poor camera and battery life). But I'm considering ditching the iPad Mini retina when I get my G2 back as I'm enjoying the whole reading while walking thing so much.
So... highlights are really the hand-feel, which is hefty in a good way (as opposed to S4 which I'd describe as flimsy) and nicely contoured. Double tap to wake and close is great. The screen is much better on whites than the S4, which makes an enormous difference for reading on. I had some impression the S4 had fixed its off-whites but it's awful.
(Also, as johnzoidberg said, battery life is absolutely stellar. I can't do 2 days on ANY phone but 1 day of full use is easily achievable.)

Up here in JHB, everyone only has the G3 or the G Flex, sadly.
Thanks for the feedback. I'm quite familiar with the S4's feel and display issues (the SO has one), and am not keen to jump into that boat again. I was also spoiled by the much better than expected quality of the Nexus 5.
I've found the S5 to suffer from the same "flimsiness" as the S4, even if the display is rather good when set on cinema mode.
The battery life does seem more than impressive, and I felt that the Nexus 5 had great battery life for my usage pattern (1-2 days without charge was easily achievable). So the G2 will fare a bit better for me, then.
I guess that my biggest concern, really, is the LG UI- I hate Touchwiz, quite keenly in fact. How does the LG UI stack up to it?

I'm not going to lie, the G2 stock firmware is not great. However... it is very easy to install the G3's ROM (I'm using the Cloudy ROM) and it is a huge improvement. I am a hardcore Cyanogenmod fan and after installing the G3 rom I feel no need to change it.

Probably. The Cresta Cell C (which actually had a G2 stand not too long ago) was located right across from the iStore.
Thanks for the perspective. I'm a hardcore AOSP fan, so CM-style is right up my alley. But, I've been hankering after an actual OEM skin that is both usable and visually unobtrusive. From what I've read on the G3, it's strongest point is actually the software. Good to know that it runs on the G2 no hassle.
One final question- because I'm pretty much sold on the G2 now: is the SA variant the D802, and has anyone purchased it from the Orange Store? I'd like to know which variant they import, I'm assuming that it's the D802. I've queried this with them, just awaiting a response from them.

The LG UI is better than Touchwiz. The icons are horrible but they give a lot of scope for customisation. I actually stayed with the stock launcher simply because you can't get knock to sleep on other launchers. It's also quite fast. I will still root it and put Cloudy3 on there sooner or later.

I had a look at the CloudyG3 ROM. Looks pretty solid.
That sucks that KnockOff doesn't work with other launchers, but Unicon should help me theme the icons on the stock launcher, then.

I can confirm that it works on Nova Launcher, as well as CM 11 ROM

Awesome, means I can keep using the Google Now Launcher. What about KnockCode?
Knock Code works on the G3 roms. Can't remember if it is on the stock KitKat ROM though...
Bear in mind that the launchers that work with knock off have it coded in. Not all have support for it.
