Meaning they are out of the CL but still play on weekdays - hopefully lowering their moral and still leaving them tired for wkend EPL fixtures...:D

They will also play on Thursday's leaving them with a day or two less recovery time.
But they do have a big squad full of quality.

At least qualification is still in united's hands even though first place is not.

Well yesterday's game was weird. Played the best attacking football we have in any game post-City defeat and yet 2 stupid defensive blunders cost us the win. Don't know if the upped tempo and better team morale was due to Young returning but we definitely looked sharper.

Have to work on tightening up our midfield though, at times Carrick and Flethcer could hardly control the midfield and were nowhere to help distribute the ball.

Its a step in the right direction and with Rooney returning lets hope its a renewal of our early season form.

Carrick and Fletcher are too similar. You need a Scholes type to scrap in the midfield with one of them alongside for distribution. Fletcher is a far better player than Carrick imho and rarely misses a pass. But he needs a fighter beside him, and it's not Carrick.

I actually totally agree with you. Fletcher seems to be the better player of the two and he should be placed with someone else. Having them both just kills us in the middle of the park.

I would've thought of it the other way. Scholes was the distributor who would always play top notch passes. He'd rarely defend and if he did, he'd give away a free kick with his horrendous tackling. Look when Keane played for us, Scholes would push up and leave a big hole in the midfield which Keane was more than happy to fill.

If Cleverley is going to be the next Scholes, then we need a top notch Defensive Mid. I was hoping Fletcher would turn into that and while he's decent, he's just not the exact type of player we need.

When he was younger and playing as an attacking midfielder, Scholes was brilliant going forward and that's his natural game. Then Keane played deep and allowed Scholes to be creative. But in his last couple of seasons, Scholes became the ball winner in midfield and played more of the Keane role patrolling the centre of the park and collecting the ball from the back.

And this is where Fletcher comes into his own, when he's got a mongrel to feed him from the back and play alongside him fighting in the centre of the park. Because he's never a ball winner and is more creative when play revolves around him with his short pass and move game. He needs the ball at his feet knowing his back is covered.

I reckon Park would do well in the defensive midfield role, but Fletcher is needed to take Utd forward and get them on the front foot. Now when things aren't going right, Fletcher is having to play too deep and Utd aren't getting the midfield under control, as we saw last night.

He'll be surplus though when Cleverley plays. Cleverley is more creative than Fletcher and younger so SAF will build the midfield around Cleverley. That's why I expect Pogba to step up hopefully soon. He's a beast and is a natural defensive mid.

I'd imagine there's room for a more creative player alongside Fletcher but I haven't seen enough of Cleverley to judge.

I would say though that I see Fletcher at the centre of SAFs plans for a few years yet. But there's a balance issue that has to be addressed first.

but can he (Pogba) pass? Carrick has one BIG advantage over Fletcher atm - his passes are defense splitting Whilst Fletcher is more of a ball winner Carrick breaks up play and makes that crucial interceptions. If only Carrick would be more active in the midfield i.e has Park's ability to run all over the place

Yes he can, and very well actually. Not to mention the guy is only 18 years old. He's not gonna be the perfect footballer yet.

But he's big and solid, the perfect build for a CDM and it's his natural position.

I agree that Carrick is the better passer, but Fletcher is the more active player in midfield. They both have their pro,s but both have their cons as well.

I expect the midfield for the future to be Cleverley and Pogba. Cleverley the creative player who sets up the forwards and plays those little 1 2's, and Pogba who will be backing him up, who can also unleash long passes downfield and take long range shots.

Then the future is looking good :)

but right now the way United is playing it's really nail biting stuff, you never know if they will win or not :(
The match against City showed how crappy we are so far

Wayne Rooney and Nemanja Vidic are set to return for Manchester United for their meeting with Newcastle at Old Trafford. Rooney missed Tuesday night's draw with Benfica with a hip injury sustained last week at Swansea whilst Vidic was ruled out through suspension.

Provisional squad: De Gea, Lindegaard, Rafael, Smalling, Fabio, Jones, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evans, Evra, Nani, Valencia, Gibson, Carrick, Fletcher, Park, Giggs, Young, Rooney, Hernandez, Berbatov.

Linesman are clearly Newcastle supporters? If that was a penamlty, then I must be Stevie Wonder. Ferdinand got a perfect touch on that. Yet again poor referring ruining football.

United play the best football in weeks, and draw :/

Props to Krul, made some top class saves.

Don't worry he'll be demoted. Can't get away with that against Man Utd @ Old Trafford

Yeah, Krul was amazing. I got so irritated with our players though. How many chances did they **** up?

Alot. Young had 2 golden chances to score, Hernandez had a few, hell even Vidic had one or two. But yeah Krul's goalkeeping combined with Simpson's goal line clearance did it for Newcastle.

The penalty was so retarded though. Not a single Newcastle player was appealing (not even Ben Arfa) and the linesman (who was right there) is like "No that's a penalty." I think even Newcastle were surprised.
