Official On Digital Media launch date confirmed

The aspect ratio that they initially broadcast in will be paramount for me...

HD is good no doubt, BUT if ODM broadcast the channels in their native 16:9 aspect ratio and the content is good, I might just switch.

Thinking

Personally, I think ODM will do pretty well if their channel line up is decent. The low end of the market is under-served. They don't mind waiting a few years for shows, because all they've had is SABC 1/2/3 and etv. I don't think too many DSTV Premium Subcribers will switch to ODM. They might downgrade to DSTV Compact or Select, but they ain't gonna move.

Unfortunately their target market are well known for defaulting ( on payment)

SABC = waste of time and effort -- ANYTHING is going to be better than that -- they took away the few programs I used to watch so basically there is NOTHING on the TV to watch at the moment.

I am smelling a sort of Neotelism -- if they want to succeed this way they should just run ALL the Arab channells ;)

I suspect I will go and get DVD's from the library.

NOT going to get rip-off DSTV -- rather spend more on the Webz :)

Please correct "realigned from MultiChoice’s 5 degrees East "

should be "from MultiChoice's 68.5 degrees East to 5 degrees East " (actually 4.8)

they got nothing usefull to say ... therefore ill reply with nothing useful :P

decoders have to be cross compatible.. there is no way or reason for spending cash on investing in new operators infrastructure if it can not be reused.

let see what Thursday brings.....

It will be interesting to see what is included in 'niche' sport, that might just be the clincher for me.

I woulda liked them to start off by aiming muuuuch higher. Give us an HD PVR offering right of the bat for R250-350 a month. I reckon that will make Premuim Mutlichoice subscribers jump ship.

Its multichoice that is dropping the ball on that one... not ODM

yeah like lacrosse, curling, underwater hockey whoo whooo... bring itr on..

on the other hand .. if they considering things that are main stream in USA like basketball, athletics, ice hockey, baseball etc...

If they offer something like Sci-Fi I'll be the first to subscribe. Just hope they don't disappoint.

Multi-Dish Setup

I assume that this is too big a difference to cover both transmissions via ONE dish ?

Does this mean TWO dishes and a multifeed "splitter-box" ???? ( It also looks like ODM are advising you to go to a bigger dish anyway )
IF
One would like to have access to both ODM AND DSTV

I will probably swap as I am not sports mad, mind you once we have decent affordable high speed Internet that is uncapped I will just use www.tvcatchup.com and pay R50 for the service to make out my IP address is in the UK; over 50 channels there and if your laptop computer has an HDMI connection just tie it into your wide screen TV. Once people realize how easy it is to do then just watch these DSTV prices drop.

Niche Sport :\ Seems like i have to stick with DSTV for quite a while longer. Can't understand why they can't just buy Setanta sports signal and broadcast that. I understand multichoice hold the rights to broadcast stuff, but surely its time that two broadcasters can now show the same content ?

+1

No mention on any HD content :(

I wish these guys would learn... Half the planet is buying HD compatible TV's... How about broadcasting some bladdy content...

The same could be said for DStv. I really can't be bothered to pay for a HD decoder until they actually expand their HD channel offering. I'll stick to watching my BD movies for now.

Good luck, I hope ODM the best...

BTW From the 400 range of decoders, it seems like it might just be a damm ugly elephant in the room :p

PS: Bid for Rugby/Cricket/F1/Soccer licenses :D

WOW... some of those are really ugly... some dont look too bad, the DSR4660 HD look alright :D

Hope ODM offers some sport (just Rugby, Cricket and F1) and some other decent channels, wouldnt mind changing then... Been at home for a 2 weeks now and watched almost every show on DSTV, its all repeating again! Please ODM, take note, we dont want as many repeats as DSTV!
