I'll sign up for this list as well

I Wonder how the EPG is going to work? ODM, please contact Microsoft and make sure you are on the list as a South African supplier.

Glad there is some competition but

Initially ODM will broadcast niche sporting content such as martial arts.

for sportsfans, a statement like that just means they have a long long way to go. Easily 5 years before they even come close to what Supersport can offer.

I'm aiming at keeping my wife off my back with more channels.... the sport just give's me a reason to go to the local driving range and have a couple of drinks, while practicing my long game.

I am excited about their launch:

1. it creates competition to MC, which is sorely needed
2. gives options and variety to programming
3. they will be exploring alternatives MC might have snubbed thinking we don't need
4. gives something to the LSM and they could end up making a ton more profit there

I do hope that the "entrance" costs to their programming does not become prohibitive. I know it's just a decoder and dish, but installation on top of this could hurt.

Then to attract the subscriber who doesn't want to give up MC just yet, does it mean two dishes on the roof to get the programming? We will already have to have a second decoder, which 100% acceptable.

Another big plus as I see it is the ability to use a external hard driver to record and play back programming. Nice! 80 hours on my SD-PVR is sometimes just not enough :)

All the best, ODM!

I'm really pleased to see them separate their offerings into categories which you can then choose from. It will be a pleasure not to have that religious crap being forced into my bouquet. Those who want it can then pay for it.

Can't wait for tomorrow to see what channels they've secured.

I dont believe this is an alternative to DSTV.

I think ODM are tapping that percentage of the population that cannot afford DSTV but at the same time want more then what SABC and ETV have to offer.

Current multichoice subscribers are not going to move across to ODM if they not getting the same or more for a cheaper price (unless they cash strapped), plus the inconvenience of shifting / changing the dish.

Sure, but that's assuming that all DSTV subscribers are on the full bouquet. But a lot of them are actually on the lesser bouquets (DSTV Compact etc.), so for them it would be a good alternative.

See this is something I don't understand. If Multichoice has exlusive licensing for sport is this not anti-competitive? Especially if you are currently a monopoly and it hinders others from coming to market.

I don't know the laws and regulations as such, that's why I am asking. It just seems strange that this is allowed.

I think it's contract based, so when the contract expires all the providers can then bid again.

Something is only anticomptetitive if a monopoly misuses it's market share to prevent competition from entering the market. Since multichoice cannot control the awarding of contracts for sport (they can only bid for the rights like their competition) they cannot be anti competitive.

they can only be found guilty of anticompetitive practices if they use their market dominance to prevent others from doing normal business. e.g if they were to force their local installer/agents network to not carry ODM equipment, it would be anticompetitive.

Or they could have forced UEC from not doing business with ODM because they buy a large % of ther decoder production in SA.

Since the sports contracts have alimited term, after which anyone can bid for them, as long as the bidding process was free and fair, MCA are acting lawfully to have an exclusive contract. In fact, pay tv require exlusivity, otherwise no one would pay for the service.

When can we expect the announcement re channel offerings? 10am today?

I have just received an e-mail from ODM and they will be having a media briefing at 12h00 today to announce the channel line up.
Let us give them our support. This is good for South Africa and hopefully in years to come their service will grow from strength to strenth.
