Official Samsung Galaxy Note (N7000) Thread

Thanks Mike, Rob and Zakdoc.

I was wondering how to make a backup before rooting in case something goes wrong with the root process, but I guess I'll take the root plunge first anyway!

I do make backups using CWM for Nandroid backup and Titanium Backup for apps on my S2; but in the absence of a mini sd card in the Note, I guess I'll have to move the backup files to PC before flashing a new ROM. How tiresome. :)

Can I flash a new custom ICS ROM (not Touchwiz ICS) straight from a rooted GB ROM? I guess I (pedantically so) need confirmation that I indeed need to flash something else first (Abyssmod red pill ICS repack or whatever). I really want to try the 'Stunner' ICS ROM.

Yes, from AbyssNote Redpill you can flash away. Just be sure to wipe data, cache and dalvik when going between different ROMs.
If upgrading a current ROM then just cache and dalvik will suffice.

I just use google drive... With a good wifi connection its painless... I hate schleping with a USB cable etc... :D

For a full nandroid backup? Wow, you have an awesome wifi connection. 10mbps? Uncapped, obviously! I have 1mbps uncapped, and I think I will back up to Google Drive as well...sometime...thanks!

Ouch. What happened?
Regardless, glad you are sorted :)

I think it all boils down to know your limitations. Some ppl are made to only use their phones and some ppl with a little bit of savvy can play around. Tried the play around-thing, but without the necessary savvy and it was only by luck that I'm still using the note this morning.

Where do you stay? I am happy to flash it to CM9 for you if you like? It is a pretty quick process.
CM9 over stock is leaps and bounds ahead of stock. In fact most ROMS are way better than stock.

I succesfully flashed Stunner. Even though I don't have a SD card, I don't need to move any backup to the PC, as a full wipe doesn't touch the 'internal SD card' as well.

The phone runs SO much better (like Mike said about custom ROM's).

Mike, what's the difference between CM9 and Stunner for you?

Wag, I also had a big scare! I tried to flash back to Gingerbread from Stunner without using the Abyssnote kernel, and I had already done a full wipe, and it didn't want to. The phone didn't want to boot at all! I was pooing bricks, I tell you!

I flashed chainfires 'root' stock firmware using Odin on PC (one of the few ways to get root without increasing flash counter, incidentally) and *phew* it loaded.

I now know that, with the Note, when changing any ROM (in my opinion) to always use he Abyssnote Kernel. I don't know if that sounds intimidating, as it did to me, but now I understand it and its juat an easy extra step in the usual process.

If you're in Durban, I can also help you...

Mike
I was hoping for this offer, I'm staying in Montana, Pretoria and I think you are in JHB. Whenever you have time I will take the phone to you.
Send you a pm with my details

It is much "lighter" and feels a LOT smoother. Stunner however is still an awesome ROM.

CM9 has updates every night which also takes care of my need to constantly flash :) :) I download the latest nightly every 3 days or so.

I see! Thanks.

Im having the same problem like a few other users have had, i have no data connection (im on the mtn network). stock ics rom
Things i have done
1. Got settings OTA (*123*13#) - received the settings and it doesnt Work
2. Edited the apn settings (mnc and mmc 655 and 10 also tried 01) as suggested on another forum saved it and the apn settings disappear, also tried just pushing the back button and it then doesnt save.
3. tried manually typing the settings in, still no joy
4. phoned MTN LOL they havent heard of mnc and mmc - so no luck there.
5. Also loaded different modem drivers, well actually have tried all - still no data connection.
So is anyone on MTN and got there data connection working, if so please detail all the settings, or even better if you could attach the backup of a APN backup, i can then just use that and restore that on my phone.

Thats normal IMO. I charge mine all night, I haven't used it yet this morning and its on 87% right now. Thats 4 hours on standby.

No dude. That not right I don't think. On stand by my Note hardly loses anything. I am on a custom ROM though and custom roms are generally tweaked for much better battery life over stock.
I will do some testing and report back.

thanks. I also thought this was crazy.... my previous phone... iphone 4 would loss like 1 - 5% overnight in standby...

edit:

on another note getting my otg cable today...

/shrugs

I'm running CheckROM. I had the same with stock.

Ive been thinking about doing the ICS thing, but Ive been waiting for the official one. Suppose I should just do it, but changing roms for me is a mission.
