Official Samsung Galaxy Note (N7000) Thread

hay just got a Galaxy Note and kies says there is an update but as we all know and love kies, its fails miserably. Is there any other way to get the update without rooting or going to service centre ?

You can download the update and use Odin to flash it. Updated to the official German ROM this way when it came out.
Not sure if Kies can update from a downloaded file. Never use it.
 
Well, money and an S2 changed hands this afternoon and now I've somehow ended the day as a Note owner :whistle:

So I wonder if anyone can give me a quick hand here. The Note has got King Droid S3 v2.0 on it and the kernel is franco 3.0.15, and as nice as it is, I'd like to flash a stock ICS ROM but I'm not really sure where I am at the moment. I flashed a few ROMS on my S2, but I only ever rooted once and that was a CF kernel, so if I want to flash a stock ICS, do I just flash as normal and keep the franco kernel?

I'm reading about this brick thing as well and just installed the apk a few pages back and apparently the phone I have is a known problem. So now I'm a bit worried about changing anything.

But the question is, if I get the latest UK ICS from sammobile, do I just flash with Odin or would I need to reroot first? I did all of my reading before on CF and trust the guy totally. This franco kernal I have no idea about.

Any advice gratefully accepted :)

You are already custom so the process is easy now.

Get Abysnote redpill and CM9 from XDA. Flash Abysnote. Reboot back into recovery, full wipe, flash CM9. DONE.

Using the above method you won't need to worry about the brick bug.

Thanks Mike. If I flash Abyssnote kernal will the King Droid ROM I have on at the moment still be ok?

I ask because can't download a ROM until tomorrow but I just got this kernel 'AbyssNote kernel 4.2 Final RedPill Touch Original Logo' from xda and would like to flash it now using CWM.

I'm still trying to grasp what's going on here, but if I flash the Abyssnote kernal, can I basically load any ROM ontop of it including the UK stock ICS 4.0.3?

You can continue to use the ROM as long as it is GB based as Abyssnote is a GB kernel.

The Abyssnote kernel makes it safe to go from one ROM to another. Before flashing a new ROM flash Abyssnote first, reboot into recovery, then flash new ROM. You won't encounter the brick bug if you stick to this method.

You don't however needAbyssnote if going from one CM9 or AOSP ROM to another.

I'll get CM9 tomorrow and do them both together then.

Physical screen panel yes, technology NO. They both may use a Super AMOLED screen, but the galaxy note has the full set of sub-pixels, whereas the S3 only has 2 sub-pixels (not a full set). This is quite obvious when you look at the S3, everything is very blue.

Not only is it extremely blue, but it's not nearly bright enough

afaik its just the GB update to 2.3.6.... no official ICS yet for SA.
 
Ok, so I've got the latest CM9 and I've got the Abyssnote redpill kernel mentioned above. I'm ready to go when I get some spare time a bit later today.

One thing confusing me a bit is that the Abyssnote kernel is a GB kernel, but the CM9 ROM is ICS 4.0.4? All this talk of brick bug and don't flash ICS isn't relevant here?

You know, I did the same with my S2. You read so much in the first couple of days that the information starts to go round in circles :)

Lol... Don't stress dude. You are good to go.

1. Flash Abyssnote.
2. Reboot back into recovery. Wipe dalvik and factory reset.
3. Flash CM9.

If you want to keep apps use Titanium Backup but sure you know this already based on S2 experience.

Also flash GApps if you want play store, gmail, etc..

Looks very nice and really smooth. This ones a keeper I reckon if I can find a digital clock somewhere :D

Thanks for your help Mike. I had a bit of S2 remorse this morning but I'm really loving this Note already. I'd finished messing around with the S2 and had stuck on LPQ and Go Launcher, but now I'm enjoying this fooling around.

Better get some work done in the meantime :whistle:

Grab Nova Launcher from the Play Store. Best on the market.

I also struggled a bit when I got my Note. I sold my S2 the same day I got my Note. Suffered major regret for about a week. After that week there was no turning back. Started to love the extra size.
My wife upgraded from her BB Bold to an S2. Feels like such a toy now :)
 
The Note doesnt have a full set of sub pixels, its the exact same tech as the SGS3 display, if anything the SGS3 will be safer, as it has a higher PPI than the Note so you less likely to notice any jagged edges. The SGS3 also has a better quality panel than the Note, which loves to clip blacks and greys..:)
 
The Note is a great piece of tech, and the large display and S-Pen has its uses, that said the OneX offers better single handed use, with a better display and CPU. The draw backs are the lack of memory card expansion on the OneX, and the much smaller battery. On the software side while both run ics, the Stock Galaxy Note ICS lags behind the OneXs Sense 4.0 in terms of ics function and look ..of course you can over look that if you plan on using custom roms as they close the gap.. on your tablet issue, while the note is big, it doesn't replace my tablet.. :)

Here's a link where its explained http://www.oled-info.com/pentile its kinda hard to explain, but in summary all it means is that if you have perfect vision and hold your phone like 10cm from your face you may notice slightly jagged edges on some text, this was shown on phones like the Galaxy S1, the Omnia 7, HTC desire and the Motorola Razr. The Galaxy Note also uses this tech, and more recently the S3. In real world terms the difference is small if ever noticeable.. the only Amoled display that doesn't use this is the Galaxy S2, hence its called a Super Amoled PLUS where the Note and S3 are just Super Amoled HD ..

So conclusion: don't worry about it unless you need the crispest screen EVER.. in which case rather get a OneX or IPhone:) :cool:
 
Oh and on why the S3 is safer... the screen is smaller, so the pixels are closer together, more dense, and because of that you less likely to notice any of those jagged edges the Note may have:)

Cool, good to know, I have noticed slight jaggedness on my S2, and now that you mention it, I will be checking it out on my Note when it arrives....
