Official Samsung Galaxy Note (N7000) Thread

Lol... What he means is the next version of Android (Ice Cream Sandwich) will be available soon directly from Samsung. IE: Not custom like we are doing.

User the phone as it is when you get it. When the official ICS comes you just update your phone and remain stock.

It won't be long though and you will be hunting down the how to parts of this thread and XDA :)

Mike...any timeline for stock ICS on MTN?

IMO, they going to hold until the brick bug has been sorted.... probably find they will release ICS 4.0.4.

(Well it would be the smart thing to do) Brick Bug affects stock ICS pushed to clients too... afaik...

It would be nice if there was some way to have a consolidated post with a list of how to's, etc on the first page of the thread. It's a massive ball ache to trawl thru the whole thread to find how to root and what we need to be aware of and be careful of if rooting and going with a custom ROM. Just saying...

Exactly.

Oronte or KingRob, who have the first two postings (or anyone else with postings on the first page) can be kind enough to gather the rooting/ROM'ing info from this thread, and post it into one of their posts on the first page, by 'editing' the post.

Furthermore, whenever a new thread is opened for a phone, I suggest that a few posts be made to 'reserve' it for important info everyone will be looking for. Obviously by the person who opens the thread. Don't open a long-term thread if you are not willing to be active and maintain the first posts with the required rooting etc info, in my opinion. Rooting, ROM flashing, known problems and solutions, all nice n tidy. That's what developers at XDA do, they 'reserve' a few posts by making basic posts, which they can just edit later if need be.

But you can really also just do that with the first post.

Just my 2c's. :p

Rooting

I agree with previous comments it would be nice having the "How to" section on the 1st page. Im seriously considering rooting and have been reading up on xda, its jus confusing with so many roms. Anyone have a simple guide to share:D

Each of the guides here are mainly links to XDA. All I am seeing with these requests is a duplication of XDA?

For rooting, a quick search at xda will reveal the answers. The OP is also generally clear enough and if followed correctly should be fine.

To figure out what the best ROMs are, just scan for the threads with the most activity. Read the last 3 to 5 pages for any problems you may not want in your choice, then go for it.

+1

I agree with Mike too, there are a number of very good threads on xda and link threads are generally stickied at the top of the forums with all available roms. That said if someone wants to do this I'd be happy to quote you in my first post.

I know I have spent many hours (when I should be um, working) going through the many forums and threads which exist out there trying to get on top of a particular issue with regard to ROMS, rooting, flashing (!?) and the like to the extent that I sometimes feel quite overwhelmed and confused. Usually though I do find something in the form of a guide which is accessible and which I can follow. Thus do have sympathy for the people wanting a "How to".... Anyway have gone from GB to ICS and yesterday updated to the latest RocketROM - a rom which I have had for the last week or two and enjoying a lot (it does have the S-pen functionality which for me is important).

Some feedback on that AOKP rom: I had yet another wakelock initially but that seems to have fixed itself. Now getting quite stellar battery life.

And this with over an hour of voice calls, and WiFi being on the whole day.

Now the question is.... Does one go buy a Note now, or do you wait for the Note 2, which is rumoured to be available between October and December this year...? According some reports, it will look like the S3, shape wise, and sport a 1.7Ghz Exynos 5250 CPU, 2GB RAM, an increase screen at 5.5inch and of course, the updated TW Launcher as found on the S3.... I really wonder, as there's nothing wrong with my S2, so I don't mind waiting, but I so badly want a Note.....

Simple fact of Life, there always has and always will be something better. Also consider the fact that when it Launches there will still be about 2 months before SA gets it and chances are it will come in at a pretty hefty price, definitely more than the current Note and the Note series was not very quick on price drops.

Well, keep in mind that SA was one of the first markets that got the Note (we got it the same week as the first, Germany), but I would expect it to be available around November or December, if you can wait, then do. I would also want the new Note (assuming higher screen resolution and either larger screen or smaller body) buy it would be hard to justify, the current Note is still the best phone currently available for me and there's nothing I really want it to do that it can't.

Yes, wait.
And then the Galaxy S4 rumours will start when the Note 2 gets here, so you'll wait for that too.

Ad infinitum.

I think if you go Note, you can't possibly go S2/3/4/5/6......

I was impatient in April, contract was up, There was no date for the S3 or One X ... So I took the Note... I'm so happy with mine that I bought the wife a note as well! All other phones look like dinky little toys now ;)
lol ... so wifes contract is up in Feb next year, she can get the note 2 :) (she had a Nokia N8 - I warned her about it ... what a waste of money that was)
