Official Samsung Galaxy Note (N7000) Thread

Whould you guys recommend the Note over the One X? I just don't want to make a bad mistake. Already did with the Nokia N8 I have. Will not be able to get a tablet aswell so the Note seems great.

Really depends on waht you want it for, my motivation behind it is I wanted a tablet, but back then never had the cash and then saw the note and saw an opportunity to kill 2 birds with 1 stone.
The note offers me features no other phone offers, size being one, the stylus being another and then most importantly the ability to easily work on the move. Generally prefer not to work, but we have 1 massive website client that occasionally needs urgent work down on weekends, the note will open up that option when I am on the move as its mostly little code glitches or things that happen.

Already have an html editor and a few design apps that I grabbed when they were on sale for the note, also the size for reading, I hate paper with a passion so I tend to do all my reading on my phone and trying to read an ebook or most anything really is pretty annoying on my nexus s. TBO if the note did not exist the One X would of been my top choice, but I removed the S3 as a possible option the moment I found out sammy cheeped the hell out of the screen.

The S3 and the Note share the same screen tech.

Now the question is.... Does one go buy a Note now, or do you wait for the Note 2, which is rumoured to be available between October and December this year...? According some reports, it will look like the S3, shape wise, and sport a 1.7Ghz Exynos 5250 CPU, 2GB RAM, an increase screen at 5.5inch and of course, the updated TW Launcher as found on the S3.... I really wonder, as there's nothing wrong with my S2, so I don't mind waiting, but I so badly want a Note.....

Has anyone bought one through FNB and if so, how long did it take to be delivered and has it received the official ICS update yet.

Also, where can one buy decent covers locally - been burned by Expansys before with crazy delivery times.

And finally, root now or wait for brick bug to be resolved?

Brick bug only exists in certain ROMS. Ones based on CM9 our AOSP don't have this issue.
Just flash the Abysnote Redpill kernel if you want to hop around between ROMs and all will be good.

Varies, CM9 in the begining was pretty lousy but its come along way on the nexus a, fewer updates becuse of leas essential bug fixes, now they spend time working on features.

Stock launcher for ICS is horse pucky, stock or custom, your better off qith nova or apex, much smoother and more features.

One thing that bugs the hell out of me is slowdown caused by too little RAM on devices like the original HTC Desire and the original Galaxy Tab (which I'm using in the interim).

Does the Note suffer from similar issues and if so, does flashing a custom ROM with the bloatware removed fix the problem?

It all depends. You have to read the last few pages of each of the threads for roms you are interested in and see what other users have to say.
Personally I prefer CM9 Nightly with the Nova launcher. My phone is silky smooth. I really have no complaints. There are a few roms for the Note that area of really good quality. I prefer the ones without the Sammy bloat. Sheesh, for a company that can make such awesome devices they sure write cr@p software

Slowdowns are not caused by too little ram, its caused by poor ram management. A few tweaks and the rite software smooths out any phone perfectly.

What do you use the s pen for on CM9 ROMS?

I don't. There are apps that support the s-pen but I don't use them. I upgraded to the Note from my GS2 because of the higher resolution and bigger screen. The pen was never part of the decision.

I am running ICS on my old HTC HD2 and it runs very very well. The newer versions of Android handle memory way better than the old versions.

I sold my Desire with the Sandvold ICS beta to a guy with an HD2 running cyanogen. He said ICS was buggy on the HD2.

Truth be told, I was tired of trying to make an old phone run the latest Android and convince myself it was running well. It wasn't.

Time will tell if I run into the same problems with the Note.

Sorry for the noob question, but I heard somewhere that certain ROM will brick your phone if you do anything in Recovery Mode... Do you guys know which ROMS they are referring to...? Custom, Stock... I'm not sure.... I'm getting my Note in the next few days(hopefully) and am planning to root the phone, using the guides on XDA.... But don't want to brick the phone in the first day....

just use the abyss kernel when swapping roms.

Also i use paranoidandroid v0.2 with thor kernel v0.12f it silky smooth as well and when the phone is not being used it deep sleeps like a beast. battery on 10% 23 hours later... with moderate use.

the s-pen works in paranoidandroid, has got all the functions you would have if using stock but it work. Can still draw and take notes.

I found 1 a while back, was pretty terrible but was by far the best and actually used the USB cable, required root though. Wasn't bothered to remember it's name it was that lousy, but it does exist, just not sure if its worth the google search.
