Official Super Rugby 2016 Thread

I have to ask though aren't we damaging our rugby by not having all the franchises play against NZ?

BIL is a big stormers fan but Ive had to keep reminding him that they haven't really been tested this season.

Now this game comes up and they get slaughtered

But they also had some poor kicks, the one Crusaders try was directly as a consequence of a poor Lions kick.

That was the try where the ball bounced on some finger tips first.

I'm not even sure that it was a try, I think that a Crusader last touched it when it was going forward (for the Crusaders).
 
Stormers concede 60 in a playoff game at Newlands. Sharks lost 41-0. If you wondered whether SA rugby should follow Lions, there you have it

What worries me is how many springboks were in that tight five of the stormers.

Yip. The mind set change John Mitchell spoke of. How SA rugby let a resource like that get away is beyond astounding. Both the Sharks and the Stormers considered him but neither would give him the 5 year contract he wanted so he went to the U.S.

And yet you look at the Lions - many "rejects" from other teams; fearless in their approach and simply playing good rugby. One might say it's the coaching; but I honestly think it's the mindset of our local players. They just are not strong enough mentally once other sides match up to them physically. And let's be frank - I think SA rugby has been played for years by all others saying how "physical" they are.

Every rugby player these days is a physical monster - South Africans are NOT stronger than their opponents in any way. We just need to play properly.

A couple of those tries the Stormers let in - eish.

Yep - because our players were scared of his tough mindset. And it's exactly that toughness we need.
 
The conference system needs to go.

SA gets 3 of 5 teams in to the playoffs only to discover that 2 of them are way out of their depth. From a Springbok perspective it is not good waiting 3/4 months to learn just how far behind New Zealand the core of the national side is.

I also feel that local derbies are watered down in this system. One or two derbies a year is something to look forward. Playing your local rival every second weekend takes the shine off.

Agree that the conference system sucks but to be fair the Sharks, they where within 5 points in all of their games against New Zealand opposition that they lost They also won two games against NZ opposition (one very close).
 
Also agree in a way it is not fair to not match against the NZ teams.... just wondering what the mood are in Aus, I mean they had an even worst superugby season.
Is NZ teams just that far ahead as I felt any of the three NZ teams in the semis could have won the sa teams, bar Lions ofc
 
Entertainment value watching SA teams are very low, and have been for a while now.

On a good day, the NZ teams would beat the Lions team. Except maybe for the Blues, the NZ teams are far ahead of all the teams. The Crusaders have been inconsistent, and also busy with a rebuild. The Canes, Chiefs and Highlanders are quality though. The Stormers imo were fortunate to reach the quarters, due to the silly format of the competition. Not playing a NZ team at all is just silly, and then to play that Chiefs team just over whelmed them.

In saying that, the Lions have been really good. The Stormers made a massive mistake hiring Fleck, and the Sharks and Bulls will really have to go back to the drawing board.

Funny old game, because looking at all the stats, most favoured the Crusaders. But the Lions scored the points which mattered
