So i paid for my first app the other day and was just wondering do you just use titanium as normal and have any of you guys had problems with paid apps after changing roms. Or once you've paid for an app can you uninstall and reinstall as much as you like?

you can use titanium to back up the app and data. All purchased apps are linked to your google account so you can download and reinstall as many times you wish. I.e.including other roms should you decide to format/wipe your phone. Just use the same google account.

Hey if your using galnet MIUI and getting excessive battery drains from android os and the likes then you should use the clean install method (http://www.galnetmiui.co.uk/content/forum/index.php?topic=875.0) It really makes a difference but you will have to loose your apps and what not for it to work. SMS history and what not you can backup using certain apps (ie sms backup and restore) and they wont lead to any problems.

Does anyone know which modem is best for Virgin Mobile? I'm currently using the standard XXJVK but I'm having problems with it loosing signal easily then using more battery to try reestablish the data link? Could it be an APN issue possibly? The connection does work and goes HSPDA etc but looses connection and then I have to switch off data to actually connect again...

The issue you are experiencing with your data connection seems to be affecting most virgin users. I'm using miui and have been having exactly the same problem and two of my friends using stock is experiencing it as well.

Spoke to a technician at virgin on friday and his advice was to switch
data roaming on. Didn't help.

So please, if you have any luck in sorting out the matter, let me know.

So, guys...

Do you think Ice Cream Sandwich will be coming to the SGS I9000? It is due to be released in October/November.

I don't care about a local release because I don't plan on using that anyway. I just want to know if you know/think that we will be able to get ICS running on our phones...
 
I guess the ROM devs will end up getting an SGS2 firmware ported to the I9000 at some point. I've read that a dual-core processor would be a requirement, so I'm not sure how they're going to pull it off... I'm happy with GB at the moment though - loads of custom ROMs (like MIUI and CM7) make "upgrading" to a newer, stock firmware quite pointless. I'll wait for the first official ICS devices to be released first and maybe just buy one next year.

I'm looking for a nice cover for my SGS. I know there are some bad ones out there I want some suggestions from people that use them first hand. Got any recommendations? I'm not looking for a flip cover / one of those leather ones. Maybe a hard back cover? I really don't know. I cringe every time I drop my precious :(
 
I have used a body glove cover since I got my fone last year. Its a rubber one which covers the back and sides (the type of cover that 90% of covers are!). It provides great grip and very good protection esp against drops coz its quite thick. Cons-it detracts from the sleekness and good looks of the device and makes it feel thicker.

Recently I got a an 'air cover' which is plastic and has all of those tiny little holes in it. It offers virtually no protection against drops. Just prevents scratches to the sides and back of the device. Its so mininalist however that you get to really see the beauty of the phone. People kept asking me if I got a new fone coz it looks quite different.

Its always a trade off between protection and looks/feel of the device.

I have the giant rubber Bodyglove condom on mine as I drop it at least once per day. Frankly I got the phone for its brains not its looks.

I would kill to have Samsung HTC etc release an Android smartphone that is a couple of mm thicker but has 2X-3X the battery inside. I am over super thin.

Your best bet is a flea market if you lucky. Otherwise search bidorbuy, I ordered my cover through one of those and it was worth it for me. Think the person I ordered from was wireless4u? Is a standard cover with a leather feel that flips open and came with a screen protector. Was only like R135 rand or something incl post.

You can go to Ebay and import yourself a nice cover, and other accessories that you can't easily find in SA.
 
Kies 2.0 issue

hi guys, new SGS1 user.
I have an issue with Kies 2.0 (newest updated version) that I hope one of you might be able to help me with.
Kies sees and connects to my phone, no probem, but the "Firmware" section is blank..... as in, there's no mention of what version firmware i have on my phone or any option to update it.
From my handset i see that i have build number FROYO.XWJS5

Any ideas on how I might (painlessly) update my phone to GB through Kies? ....i'm not really keen on Rooting as i'm not that confident in my abilities to not brick my phone :)
 
thanx Gary :) . . . i actually got KIES to work and finally updated my SGS after "spooing" the CSC entry.
I'm on official 2.3.3 now and its working fairly well (albeit a bit boring). I've been doing a lot of reading lately about custom ROMs and I find myself being pulled toward flashing a Darky or MIUI ROM (you guys seem to be having fun with the look and perfomance, and i hate missing out).
Having never messed with flashing anything, do I need to ROOT my phone first? or will using ODIN take care of that during the process?

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated :)

It depends on which ROM you are going for, but a lot of them come rooted after you installed them via Odin, then flashed.

The process is mostly the same for installing them. Most of them require you to be on a certain version before flashing. Like MIUI requires you to be on 2.2 (FroYo) while Darky is 2.3 (I think, haven't used darky for a while now).

Oh, anyone having problems with WhatsApp? My messages are extremely delayed if I don't have WhatsApp open when I'm receiving messages.

It seems as if it doesn't check for messages often enough or doesn't push then through fast enough. Anyone got the same problem or have a fix for this?

I'm on MIUI and Vodacom

as vengence said, a lot of custom roms automatically root your device when you flash via odin/heimdall. One thing to check first is that you can enter download and recovery mode. If u dont know how, or what that is, a quick google search will explain it.

MIUI is a Rom which is flashable from Clockworkmod recovery, so the easiest thing to do is root using the CF root kernel, which automatically installs clockworkmod recovery. then,in order to install MIUI, its as simple as putting a zip file onto your sd card, entering recovery, and clicking a few buttons. You will running MIUI in a few min :)

Im not entirely sure if Darky can also be installed using a flashable zip from CWM, as i have never used it.

But if you need more help/details/links with regards to going from stock to MIUI let me know and i will help.
