brilliant :) ...that's exactly the kind of info i was looking for. Everywhere else i've looked for answers so far has been subtley biased toward whatever ROM that particular site or forum was aligned with.
All i was trying to get at was what the least painfull and most beneficial method of flashing would be. Oh, and don't get me started on the acronyms and Android jargon....jeeez....my last phone was a Sony Ericsson P1i, so all this talk of PIT files and ROMs and Deodex and CWM has been (and continues to be) quite a steep learning curve for me.

I'd really apprecite it if you could point me to where the relevant files are that i'm going to need, so that i can get started right away :)
PS. 3 button recovery and 3 button download both working fine.

PPS. last night i was still pretty much in the dark (pardon the pun) as to which ROM to flash so i started downloading the Darky ROM 10.2 RE version....i just now noticed that the 215MB zip file is sitting on my desktop waiting for me to do something with it...lol.
I'll resist until i hear from you again :)
 
Darky ROM 10.2 RE is the best place to start, in my opinion. It roots your phone for you and the flashing is all done through Odin.

I followed a video tutorial by TotallyDubbed, it should be on the darkyrom forums. It was super simple, just watch the video once or twice before going ahead and doing it, for safety's sake.

From there, it'll make flashing other roms easier. I went from Darky 10.2 RE to MIUI and A: I'm loving the difference, and B: It was dead simple.
 
ok cool....so i can flash back and forth between ROMs to see which one i'm most comfortable with? that sounds good, except for the constant backing up and restoring of contacts, Apps, messages, etc.... doesn't wiping your phone start to become a moerse schlep after a while? I'm just assuming here that the device needs to be wiped before a new ROM can be flashed.....or am i thinkin of a Kernel? . . . .right about now it should become apparent that i have no idea what the difference is :(

I have all my contacts as google contacts and you get sms clients that saves your messages on flash. The apps you have to back up though. Or just reinstall.

ROM - this is basically the software which your device runs on, and includes applications,settings,user interface etc.
Kernel - this is a 'thing' which essentially manages the power and hardware of your device. For example if you want to overclock, get BLN, vodoo colour/sound etc. you will need to flash a kernel which supports this.

All ROMS come packaged with a kernel, so for example when you flash darkys rom, it will automatically flash the kernel which darky has included in the rom. So generally, you dont need to worry about kernels. The CF root kernel i mentioned earlier, is basically a kernel which is almost identical to the stock samsung kernel. When you flash this kernel, it basically gives you root, as well as custom recovery(where you can then flash roms and other kernels from). Thats why i said if you plan on going straight from stock to MIUI, the best option is to flash the CF root kernel, and then all you need to do is get the MIUI zip onto your device, enter the custom recovery, and flash the rom.

Roms can however also be flashed using odin/heimdall - i think darkys needs to be done this way. If you flash darkys, you will also get root, and custom recovery. So if you wana move from darky to miui, you can simply flash the miui zip from recovery.

So it basically comes down to which rom you want to flash first. Darky-follow the video tutorial instructions. Ive never flashed darky so cant help much there.
If you want to go from stock to miui - flash this kernel http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788108 . Instructions are included in the first post of the thread.
Then head over to the MIUI site of your choice - i would recommend miuiandroid.com or miui.us or galnetmiui.co.uk (check out the miui thread in these forums for more info). Download the latest rom zip file, copy it to your internal sd card, enter recovery, select install from zip file, and then navigate to the miui zip file, and flash it. then click reboot. and your fone will restart with miui installed.

In terms of wiping of your data - this generally needs to be done the first time you move from stock to a custom rom. From there onwards, you can make use of titanium backup to backup apps and app data. Contacts and calendar you can sync with google. Sms's can be backed up using certain apps (cant remember which ones - i think gosms can do it).

Last night though, after not hearing from anyone in this thread, i had to give in to the temptation of the Darky side....so by following the tips you gave and video in that thread, i successfully flashed my stock device with Darky’s 10.2 RE :)
I must say it was a very liberating experience for some odd reason…lol….and I also got the feeling that there’s going to be a whole lot more flashing going on in my immediate future.
Everything went as smooth and painless as you said it would, except for my contacts….which I stupidly entrusted to the backup prowess of Kies 2.0 . . . which subsequently can’t connect to my phone, so there’s no way to get the contacts back onto the device……eish.
I’ve kinda “pulled a move” since then so I sort of kinda have some of my contacts, but there a still missing ones for some reason. (I’ll figure it out in time I’m sure).
Everything else is working brilliantly though, with the odd “force quit” of the MyBroadband app and Whatsapp…..not everytime, but enough times to be a potential issue. Also, can’t seem to add my Facebook account to sync with my contacts, it keeps saying “login failure, try again later”

Now about that MIUI ROM :) . . . so you day I can flash it directly from my phone? With having to connect it to my PC and without having to wipe everything again? :) . . . . sounds like a plan.

The force close issues could be resolved by wiping cache and dalvik cache. Perhaps someone with dark experience knows? Best option would be to post in the darky thread on xda.there will be lots of people who will be able to help.
In terms of backing up your contacts, just use Google sync, you'll never have to worry about contacts ever again.

All you need for MIUI is the zip file on your SD card, so you can either download it to your PC and copy it over, or simply download it to your device if you are on wifi or have a data bundle. I'm not too sure what the procedure is on going from darky to MIUI but from what I understand, you need to disable the lagfix if there is one and then flash. But please first double check this over on MIUI forums or darky forums etc. You may need to wipe certain things. But now that you have root, you can use titanium backup to backup your apps.

Also,get into the habit of making a nandroid backup before flashing new roms-checkout that video link in my previous post. So if you do mess something up you can just reload the backup.

Enjoy, the flashing becomes highly addictive!
 
Just finished flashing MIUI :) ....busy setting everything up the way i like it. Definitely looks like its going to be addictive.
I didn't however backup my contacts with Google Sync....i opted for exporting them to the ext SD card and then importing after the flash. Worked like a charm.....except.....i imported an old copy from before i weeded out all the old numbers and names :( ....now i can't find an option to delete all contacts from the contact list so that i can import the correct file. Any suggestions?
 
Hmmm it doesn't look like there's a batch delete option! Seems like you may have to delete one by one :/ MIUI is not perfect lol. First example right there. But its still an amazing rom. Which version have u flashed?
 
Ok, so everything seems to be going well so far.....except maybe for the faster than usual battery drain.

The battery will drain faster than usual over the first few days after installing a new rom. It takes a few charge cycles for the battery to properly re-calibrate itself.

So enjoy the rom and hopefully within a few days it will be as good, if not better than before.
 
Can you guys tell me where is the best place Online or in Joburg to buy a replacement battery?
Do you get batteries bigger than 1500 MaH? (The normal G7 battery)?

Not dodgy at all. I have purchased many items from there.
Just look at sellers ratings and always take insurance.
Also read the items description, some batteries will be fong kong and others will be genuine.

Uh, no thanks. I don't like Auction sites. I'd rather buy from a reputable dealer.
 
Just wondering. I have Darky Rom 10.1 on my SGS at the moment and want to install miui, do I still need to revert to froyo to get it done, or is there a quicker way?
