Can't call my following advice a solution but it is an alternative.
Export all your Windows 7 contacts to VCFs(vCards) and import into the GMail account you are using for your phone. This would then auto-sync(if enabled) all your contacts.

For me my BlackBerry Bold 9000 is like the A10 Warthog ... not pretty, definitely not cute, but extremely effective at doing the things it was designed to do. For me Android (as deployed in Galaxy S) is trying to be everything for everybody (to gain as much market share as quickly as possible), like a V22 Osprey with missiles, a 105mm howitzer, and "go faster" stripes.

Thanks. I managed to import them with KIES. had to select the first contact, scroll down and click last contact while holding ctrl.
 
hmm, I'm currently torn between the HTC Desire and the SGS, is there anywhere I can actually compare 2 demo models physically next to each other?
I'd like to see the SGS' screen in action, heard it's amazing, even though I'm a bit more partial to the Desire due to it's slightly smaller size, the LED flash and the optical trackpad.
The (claimed) better battery life on the SGS makes the decision even harder!

THIS is why i had to get m SGS cash. voda***** wouldnt give me an upgrade. i hate them.
 
So, since I rooted and "lag-fixed" my SGS, I'm ready to take the plunge in flashing a custom or stock ROM on my phone. Any advice on which ROMs to check out? I'm struggling to find decent resources on ROMs for the SGS. There's tons of info on the web for the Desire though... :confused:
 
I had the same issue.

i exported all my contacts in vcf format.
copied them onto my memory card
then went to contacts>menu>more>import/export?import from sd card

and voila

All you really need is XDA-Developers.
 
Well they all have their different purposes. Check out the Huge Info thread in the Android Development section. It’s one of the stickies. On post 6 i think he lists Custom Roms and what each is suited for.
 
I want to root my SGS, but i cant seem to get hold of the update.zip file. Every place i try and get it, the download krawls down till it basically stops. Does someone know where i can get it at a proper speed. Can I do it by booting into recovery mode. is that the best way?

just donwload the Ryanza lagfix, and root it using that program :P

and ya just boot into recovery mode then
 
so ryanza lagfix includes the rooting process. i thought it needs to be rooted before the lag fix. ?
 
i downloaded the lagfix straight to my phone off android market :)

and it takes you through the steps. First you have to root. so you say root, it places that update folder in the right place. Then you boot in recovery and do it... and voila :)
 
okay will try ryanza. i cant seem to get into recovery mod by holding the three buttons. will this stop me?
 
i struggled to get into recovery mode ! but eventually got it right.

While the phone is on, hold the volume +, middle button an the power button... when the phone reboots, let go of the power and just hold volume and middle.

took me a few tries...
