Official Thread: Samsung Galaxy S (I9000)

Anyone know how much I would have to pay in on a Talk 500 contract via Autopage (no, don't shoot me regarding my choice of SP :o)? via Vodacom directly?

Go directly through Vodacom and skip the R150 "admin fee". They should deliver the next working day if you order in the morning... I think the pay-in shouldn't be more than R500, seeing as I'm on Talk 120 and had a pay-in of just below R1400.

i got an mtn one... took me like half an hour to get right :/

but got into recovery mode on the phone :)

Some people have reported that heating up the phone (in the oven, or sun) has temporarily enabled the 3 button combo on phones which had the feature factory disabled, no joke :-). Otherwise use adb

I wonder why Samsung made it so difficult to get into Recovery with (certain batches of) this phone? Other Android phones are dead easy to reboot into recovery...

Because they don't want people to install all of those inofficial firmwares and possibly brick their phone in the process :-)

It's a bug. They should be fixing it with firmware updates via Kies. Just hope the update doesn't fail or you have to take the phone in to get it working again.

Haha! 2 opposite replies to the same question... :) I kinda figured its a bug, from all my scouring of XDA the past couple of days.

Anyone managed to scratch or scuff their screen yet?

Looks like I did, somehow. Can see a few very tiny scratches when I get the light reflecting at a certain angle, in the sun. Nothing worth caring about since they're so hard to see. Right now I can't find them.
I guess wiping the screen with my shirt could be the cause? I've been doing that with my glasses for years and they have no visible scratches though.

Maybe they're not scratches but some marks that are very tough to get rid of, I'm not sure.

I'm now running what is apparently the official Froyo firmware :D It's not available to the general public yet. September 23rd is when they plan to start releasing it according to some news sites, branded firmwares may take longer though.

Think I may have done the same. Very faint speckled colours effect. Almost like when there's a bit of moisture on the phone. Slight, but I'm the kind of person that will be irritated just knowing it's there even if I can't see it.

No scatches whatsoever. Used the phone for 6 weeks without a screen protector and am using one now.

How is the new firmware? Any issues picked up yet?

i have a non-branded phone, so can i get it on 23rd?

also, i put some MKV files on my sgs, but when i use the video player, there is no sound and there are no subtitiles. I have rock player, the free one, but it wont play now, i think the trial has expired.

Seems like a good improvement. I'm running it without any lag fixes or performance tweaks for now to see how it goes. Performance is much better. Still seems to be a bit of lag now and then but it's minor now. I'll run it like this without any lag fixes for a while so I can better judge if the lag fixes are still worth using.
Apparently without lagfixes it still isn't quite as smooth as the Snapdragon phones with Android 2.2, based on comments I've read.

I see some complaints that you can't reply to Exchange email, your phone will send a blank message. It doesn't affect me personally but I think Samsung better fix this before they release it.

Adobe Flash now runs just fine. In the previous 2.2 firmware it could cause lag and a very low framerate, but now it can even play videos on desktop sites smoothly.
You can also play videos straight off the Youtube mobile site, this appears to be using HTML5 instead of Flash. Unlike Flash the playback controls are usable on a phone here. I hope most sites replace Flash with HTML5 for video playback because it's so much better on a phone than Flash.

@The Philosopher: Well it's not set in stone so prepare to wait longer. But I'm sure you'll have it by the end of the month.

Edit: Ok so I just went ahead and installed the lag fix using the "One Click Lag Fix" app on the market again. Also used it to set the disk scheduler to "deadline", not sure how much that helps. Phone is now blazing fast :D
Samsung are still too incompetent to swap their filesystem for a faster one so it's still worth installing a lagfix for a major improvement.

Which one are you using and how good/how expensive is it? I want to import SGP for myself and a friend. Read good things about them.
