Official Thread: Samsung Galaxy S (I9000)

Well I came from a Blackberry & HTC WM6.1 background. This phone is not 10% better or 40% it is in a league of its own, at least 10x better than anything I've used. I was helping a friend use her Blackberry and that screen is so blurry lol. The SGS is like having new eyes, I am ruined, could never go back :D

So, is there anyone on here who's rooted their Vodacom SGS yet? I'm just about ready and want to install RyanZA's lag fix. Downloading OCLF from the Market as we speak...

Ok, downloaded and applied RyanZA's OCLF. Worked flawlessly, despite me not being able to access Recovery mode through the 3-button-press. Was able to do it through adb. Haven't noticed anything strange on my phone yet, except the new "Superuser Permissions" app. Hope all goes well! :)

I don't really find that to be true (unless you were using an 8520) the screen on my 9000 holds up quite well (obviously it's smaller). The SGS screen is nice but it isn't mind-blowing to me, just really bright even on the lowest setting.

Ok, THOUGHT I installed the RyanZA lag fix, but didn't. Had to go through the steps first to install the "RyanZA LagFix v1+" or something and, consquently THOUGHT I bricked my phone... The Vodacom intro video music played and BAM - black screen... for a LONG time. Then all of a sudden the video started playing with no music and the phone booted correctly. RELIEF!

Samsung at Vodaworld wants R6000 (apparently cost + 14%).
Expansys asks R 5400, and
Amazon.co.uk asks +- R4730 (430 pounds).

OK, been running the lag fix now for quite a while. Must say, it does make a HUGE difference in the overall speed of the phone! Everything just *works* instantaneously. No need to wait for screens to open anymore and, best of all, I haven't had an app force-close on me so far! I can recommend running the RyanZA OCLF to pretty much all SGS owners running Android 2.1.

Shouldent there be a Bug Fixes section in this thread for all common bugs on the SGS with current roms.. There will always be bugs on new phones and there is always fixes.. Nothing is perfect!

Cheez, reading all this threads about the SGS i making me sick, i still have to wait 17 more days to upgrade! Aaaahhh feels like forever!!

I am starting to notice these lag thing everyone is talking about. Also I had apps die too, having to force close them. These are irritating but luckily not to common. I just want Froyo now! If you have the RyanZA lag fix, can then just get froyo normally when it comes out ?

I just want mybb to open in full version instead of mobile version :(

Yes, the major updates wipe everything anyway. I've updated firmwares without removing the lagfix.

@Milano: Get the DolphinHD web browser, then get the "Desktop Toggle" addon. It's a pain that Mybb doesn't implement their mobile sites properly and allow you to switch to the desktop site easily. Back when I used my Nokia 5800 I never knew the mobile site even existed because it just sent me to the full site.

With this phone, provided you have the bandwidth, you may as well browse the full version of most sites. The screen makes them comfortable to browse, except the overly bloated sites which can slow things down a bit.

Awesome, thanks ;)

Just remember - it was, of course, made in ZA. ;)

COol, also how do i install apps by putting them on the phone, and also what file name do they have. I have seen .apk or .zip.

Thanks for your work :)
But I hope Samsung will replace their crappy filesystem in the official Froyo update so we wont need it.

Use the "My Files" app, or any other file browser if you have one. Then just open the *.apk file to run the installation. It will be *.apk. If you get a *.zip or something then you'll need to extract it to get the *.apk out.
You can extract the *.zip right on your phone if you install a capable file browser like AndroZip.

I realise I spend way to much time in this thread

Well, no Galaxy S for me.

Vodacom wasnt prepared to give me one apparently because my credit rating wasnt high enough. Nevermind that I have accounts with Telkom and MWeb, as well as a platinum credit card. Apparently its mostly because I just havent built the credit rating up over a long enough time, having only arrived back in SA from the UK in January. Sigh... If they wont I doubt any of the others would either. Looks like I'll be waiting for a bit. Maybe that will be a good thing - maybe I'll end up getting one of the new android phones with a dual core CPU!

although I really was looking forward to having one today, thanks Vodacom for being too risk averse.

I hardly have any credit on my name and i'm getting my i9000 from cellucity, so give them a try. Even MTN had no problems with me not having credit.

Trust me Vodacom wouldn't even give me a Blackberry 8520, for R180PM, but now a couple of months later I already have a HTC Desire and Blackberry 9700, from MTN. My point Vodacom are full of nonsense rather try MTN they tend to be more understanding.

Does anyone know how to sync windows 7 contacts with this phone?
the KIES pc suite only allows you to save one contact at a time, i cant do this with all 100+ contacts, its gonna be time consuming!
