Official Thread: Samsung Galaxy S (I9000)

Eish.. I've got a huge problem. My home button stopped working. Does anyone know if there is a fix? or is it a hardware fault?

and is there a way to load the official vodacom firmware?

Anyone here running the speedmod kernel on stock (kies) JPX? Any increase in performance? And does it keep the stock samsung feel or does it change it?

I see stock JPX has 339mb ram available :D

Did you download it?

Yes, I am running K11B 500hz on top of stock JPX (via Kies). It is very smooth but battery life is taking a bit of a hammering with Wireless enabled, although reception appears to be better than raw JPX. I think I preferred JPO with K9, it was just as smooth, and battery life was better. K11B is still in test.

JPX by itself is great and has virtually no lag, and am kind of sorry I put SpeedMod on top now. Either I will revert or use the 256hz version when I have the time and HardCore does another release. Not sure yet.

Have the usb mount issue (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9804784&postcount=5741), so can't currently write to the external card from the PC as it is mounted as read-only, but there is a fix for that which I haven't applied yet.

SpeedMod does not change appearance in any way, it is purely a performance booster.

The GPS on the Galaxy S is really so terrible :-/.

Comparing it to the N8 it makes the map book look like a better option.

Wasted my money on Co-Pilot for nothing. Oh well.

Sorry this is confusing. If the GPS on the Samsung is bad then surely you would get some other software to do the job. However you did by the sounds of it (CoPilot) but you still don't like it. How can you blame the Samsung because you don't like CoPilot?

Unless I've completely missed your point and if so please re-point it out for me.

I think the problem with SGS Gps is with the hardware driver which means that any software will not work very well with it. I know later versions of firmware such as JPU and JPX according to reports get a accurate fix quicker and work much better than older firmware. So if The_Unnamed is still on an old firmware that might be why is seems terrible. I don't use my phone's GPS much myself.

I installed Doc's JPX 5.1 with voodoo kernel and lagfix disabled yesterday. I see V6 is out already though there are few changes.
JPX is otherwise very fast and sofar I dont need a lagfix. Some people report over 200 apps without lag on JPX no lagfix.
I installed the clean install using recovery mode over my Darkies 5.6 JPU which was also very fast. However I don't like the theme. Too little color for such a nice screen.
Doc's rom does is just a stripped down stock with some added applications, rooted and a disabled voodoo kernel. It is unthemed so looks like stock though you can apply themes seperately. I just create my own battery icon mod as that is all I wish to change for now.
I am still looking for a way to map the power button as a camera button as it was in Darkies though and a backlight notification mod.

I am still looking for a backlight notification mod.
Why don't you just use NoLED? It works pretty well except that I'd really like an Exchange notification as well as all the others.

As Munch said, Google maps and Co-Pilot both take long to lock on and to accurately keep a fix.
eg, It would skip over to a small road next to the freeway and re-calculate :-/.

I am running JPM at the moment, upgrading to JPU tomorrow and will see how that goes.

Ok well I'm running XXJPX and I have my phone indoors and I immediately get a lock on my location within 200m. So I think it's time to upgrade.

Someone reported an over the air upgrade to XXJPX via Kies by simply doing some registry hack. This seems easier (on the warranty) than flashing.

Why JPU and not JPX? JPX is an official firmware and JPU older leaked?

Kies is not over the air. Also I think the Kies method will only not void your warranty if the local version of firmware is going to be the same(probably). I have seen the kies method fail though on older firmwares(youtube) so not sure it's any safer than other methods. I am sure Kies does something similar to Odin.

Thanks will check it out but I found this and quote the BLN thread:
"Measurements showed, that an ongoing BLN increases battery consumption by 0,18% per hour. The average battery consumption without BLN is 1,04% per hour, so an ongoing BLN results in an overall battery consumption of 1,22% per hour. And by the way: ongoing NoLed results in an overall battery consumption of more than 2,5% per hour."

So seems like you will end up halfing your daily battery life with NoLED if that is true.

Interesting, thanks. But surely that only applies if there is a notification? So the power use would not apply if there isn't a notification? I am using BLN that comes as part of SpeedMod kernal.

Dang, I turn my back for a second and new versions pop up everywhere.

So if someone is running a custom ROM, say Darky's 5.6 JPU, and is looking to update, is it the general consensus that going to stock JPX is better than getting a custom JPX ROM from Doc, or Darky, or someone else?

LOL, that is an impossible question to answer. On the one hand you have people who flash for fun and exploration and are really keen on just looking at the tech, and on the other hand, you will have your average phone users, who just 'want the phone to work'. There will be thousands of people in the middle.

The SGS is an interesting case because a lot of the tech in the base model didn't work as well as it should have, probably most pronounced in the RFS lag issues and GPS areas. So a lot of the non-tech people are finding they can actually do something about it without a huge amount of risk and a lot to gain and have found it very liberating, which is great.

The stock JPX and leaked JPU are both excellent, and actually makes the phone do what is was supposed to do out of the box and fixes the two most important issues, lag and GPS. I cannot comment on Darky's or Doc's ROMS because I haven't used them, that is entirely up to you.

BTW, both of those ROM's are on version 6 now.
