No, not yet. I've read some opinions and there seems to be very little between them. I'm still running Juwe's 4.3.1 with the speedmod kernel. It's brilliant, I've yet to find a bug. There's no BLN support though.
Juwe, is collaborating with the developers of Talon kernel in order to incorporate it into his new rom. I've read good things about that kernel as well, so it seems like it should be a good rom.
 
Galaxy S Time to Root?

I'm on the desire and am a happy custom rom user.

My sister however is on the Galaxy S, and has endless problems with Wifi (Well documented obtaining IP issue).

Also, the phone is super slow, probably because of Samsung's bloatware, which compared to Sense, is pathetic (no offence).

So, what's the best custom Roms out there for the galaxy?

I would say go for Darky's ROM. Cocococo also says that Juwe's rom is quite good
 
I've been on Darky for quite a long time, I started on some 2.1 version and am now running 10.1 (2.3.3). It definately is a very stable rom...

Although, I can't quite seem to make out the advantages of Darky over stock anymore. Once you root, add a voodoo kernel and get BLN you have a brilliant, stable rom as well which is not much different to Darkys
 
So, I flashed the new Juwe rom today. At first I had a few issues, was a bit laggy and had some reboots. But, I flashed the rom again and did a few manual reboots and everything is great now. I agree with Tim though, there's very little in it at the moment.

JVP (2.3.4) stock rom has also been leaked in the last while, so that might be worth a look as well.
 
Ok.

Just in case I don't get the time to root and explore different roms, I'm first going to upgrade to 2.2.

Will the upgrade (official) fix the lag issue? (I'm avoiding reading the whole thread).
 
I'm waiting for the official Gingerbread release... I hope not for too long.
 
I was looking at maybe getting darky rom, when I notice an update for Kies, so I updated and then it said a firmware update was available. It was the Gingerbread update. I bought my Samsung Galaxy S in Malaysia.

Model GT-I9000
Firmware: 2.3.3
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9000DXJV9-CL216763
Build number: GINGERBREAD.DXJV9

I wouldn't get my hopes up if I were you. I am willing to bet that anyone that you are able to get hold of at either vodacom or samsung SA would tell you that the new Android version is froyo.

When the froyo update was supposed to be officially released in SA I went to almost every official service centre in Cape Town and without exception every single one of them was unable to help me (and most of them had absolutely no idea what I was talking about).
 
Why would you bother going through service centres and crap to get an official update? That's more effort than flashing it yourself. It's easy to just flash a UK firmware.
 
Nasty that they can include Gingerbread with the SGS(II) and not make it available for the SGS (i). I suppose if I don't do my own updating I will have quite a bit of waiting to do :cry:

Might as well just flash a custom rom then.
 
Flashed darky 10.1 :) , first flash, battery life is much improved over previous froyo

Coz from what I've read, it's a problem with the file system. So unless the update reformats the onboard storage, it won't fix the lag issue.

Anyhow, next time I'm down south, I'll load a custom rom.

If I remember correctly, from froyo most custom roms reformats to a ext4 filesystem, thus the improvement in this regard.

The original question was whether the official Froyo update would fix the lag issue. Since no data was lost, no formatting took place.

Well the lagfix takes care of that. For example the Voodoo one. But its very easy to install those on the stock rom as well
