Pings look fine, it's just general browsing / streaming that's really bad

Our Dedis never had unlimited traffic, they were increased quite substantially a while back though.
Our Shared hosting from Premium and up has unlimited traffic.

I'm reading through a few posts and have picked up that you guys are battling with downloads during the day/ office hours.
Can you please let me know what you're trying to download? Whether it be from torrents, NNTP, HTTP etc etc?

Please also include your ADSL account type within the responses so our Engineers can get a better idea on where to start looking.

4Meg uncapped.

I rate limit downloads to 300KB/s otherwise after hours would have been at full line speeds.

All NNTP but web downloads similar.

Happy with after hours. Not happy business hours.

Is this how we can expect these accounts to run when one is still "5 star", how much more will it degrade as one is down rated?

I logged a ticket. But wanted to make myself heard here too.

Getting about 1 Mbps speeds on my 4 Mbps. Sync is stable at 6 Mbps.
Telkom guest account gets over 5 Mbps.
WA test IS account gets over 5 Mbps.

So what is wrong with my account? I suspect the star system. I have warned that the reason I moved to WA was get move away from the star system which I know causes havoc with my internet. I promised to give it a shot again after being promised that IS performance has improved. I wonder if WA was testing on accounts not subjected to the star rating system such as the test account given to me.

Of course I have the whole month to test the IS account still. So I just hope this is a teething problem. I expect all teething issues to be sorted in a week though. There after I will rate the performance for the remaining 3 weeks. Thing is I know from experience that the star system results in erratic internet performance regardless of your star rating. Im usually on 5 as I generally download less than 100GB per month however I expect full performance as a result.

My problem resolved itself at around 6pm. Not sure if related to the network fix they said they done because I tested after they said the fix was done and speeds were still slow. Maybe my traffic has not yet routed through the fixed network link. However I hope it is not related to relaxed prioritisation kicking in for the start of the weekend. My former experience with IS, after hours and weekends I never had a problem. So I will test again during the week in office hours.

Morning Munch,

Thanks for the update. Please let me know if you still having issues so I can get our engineering guys to investigate.

News Server

Appears to be some problems here ?

I used to use news.wa.co.za which previously worked fine for me
NOT working now !

news.is.co.za
and
news.wa.co.za

both resolve to

news.isdsl.net [196.26.208.250]

I can connect but some how nothing seems to download
or
The news groups are not being updated correctly ?

Looks like the Akamai has also not been fixed ?

Code:
C:\>ping www.cisco.com

Pinging e144.dscb.akamaiedge.net [2.18.112.170] with 32 bytes of data:

news.is.co.za rocks for me, it supports up to 20 concurrent connections, so I almost always max out my line, which is 950kbyte/sec on a 10mbit/sec line on a RedAfrica special.

As for Akamai, Cisco.com is a bad test, they have some strange akamai redirection. Rather try www.ign.com.

C:\Users\Tinuva>ping www.ign.com

I have home uncapped 4MB
Speeds from news server dropped from 450KB/s to 330KB/s
Speedtest.net down speeds decreased from 3.9/0.5MB to 3.26/0.4 MB - http://www.speedtest.net/result/2548082270.png
Dota 2 ping went from 176ms to between 400-1000ms

So Far everything seems slower with insane latency on dota 2.

OK
Tried site you suggest

Code:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]

Looks OK but the strange Akamai routing seems to work OK on Telkom

Tried the News-Server again
Using Grabit
Picks up the newsgroup list OK
Seems to go through the motions of downloading articles but nothing shows in the "Download Speed" window and no new articles are shown in the Articles window ?

Worked fine before the change over

[EDIT]
OK -- I tried importing an NZB
This works fine and is flying along
Just the actual groups that are not updating properly
[/EDIT]

STILL
???????

When using .nzb files, you don't need to grab a group list. Also I find grabit and altbinz works very poor on most news servers, where the latest SABnzbd works great, especially with the way some of the media files are packaged nowadays. Almost always when people have problems with local news servers, it is when they use grabit or altbinz.

As for the Akamai stuff, trust me, 99% of your akamai content will be local, its only a select few sites like the cisco one that is not, and that is when specific to specific akamai clusters.

Hi Zain76,

Can you pm me the following info so I can take this up with out ADSL guys:

Customer Code;
Latest Speedtest; tracert to either local or international/ both
What exactly is the problem i.e: browsing. P2P etc.

Anything else that will assist as well.

Hi Justin.

I have done 9.28GB in march and am still rated 5*.

This last weekend downloads came down at line speed.
This morning once again limited to 150-160KB/s.

Can you please answer if this is expected network performance(if it is that's fine), or if their is a problem with my account. If the latter can you provide feedback from your engineers of their investigation following my PM to you of my account details last week.

Solved !

Thanks -- I gathered as much
Was just checking to see where the problem was ( it is in the group list update )

OK
Call me old fashioned but I like compiled rather than interpreted -- assembler is preferred but C will do in a pinch :)
Using AGENT temporarily -- which does work
Some sort of difference in the way the news server WA were using and the one IS is operating works ?
In process of writing to developer of Grabit -- ver 2 beta ( I like the UI and some other things )

Hi Daveogg,

I have received feedback on this matter and replied to your PM.

I also cannot see a star rating, and my inyternet experience hasnt improved.

http://www.speedtest.net/result/2549321193.png

I sent the details last week, Thrs, probably too soon.

But, have had enough.

I have downgraded from Business 4mb uncapped at R2099 per mth, to Business Uncapped 1mb, at R499 a mth.

I am getting .24 mbps, and just dont think u can fix it.

You have had 18 mths.

The downgrade has been scheduled ..presumably there is a lead time.

I do feel robbed, that I have paid R2k a mth, for that time, and never sniffed at anything over 1mbps, for a few days.

I suppose I should have done more, but, Telkom/Web Africa ping pong/blame game, is no fun.

Will see what speeds I get on the new contract .. it cant be much worse.
