Old-school shaving

I tried that. Worked well on some parts of the face, and not so good on other parts. Biggest issue was that the growth was uneven after that, i.e. some parts would grow faster and darker than others, and that just looked freakin' weird. Went for a couple of sessions, but decided to drop it after I had more skin issues than what it was worth.

I sharpened my 13cm Victorinox blade like this the other day and it is super sharp now. I then also found half a tile at work (looks like granite with a very smooth but not gloss surface) which I use to do the final sharpening/polishing of the blade edge. Works like a dream. And I am very happy as now I don't have to spend $$$ on sharpening stones....

Thanks, I've used ceramics for knives before but doubt it would be good for a straight razor. Would hate to screw up the cutting edge by trying it out :D
 
If you guys are in Jhb, I know a shop that sells some of the best old school shaving creams money can buy, Truefitt & Hill. Its expensive initially, but if you use a brush you can use minimal cream and make it last. Place is called Croft & Co. and it is in Parkhurst.

sure i enjoy a nice patient shave of perfection, but mostly during the morning rush, its the easiest way to get out of the house looking half decent!

LOL! Granted, I used to be like that too. But do yourself a favor and treat yourself to a proper wet shave at a traditional barber.

You'll get it... ;-)
 
I'm not sure what the big deal is about these double edged blades. I used them for years but only because they were dirt cheap and they elicited a certain sense of nostalgia. TBH the inexpensive disposables work just as well.

^ this ... use the fairly inexpensive disposables and they work well ... but would not mind trying to find something better ... so will give these double edged blades a shot at some point :)
 
Bought 5 packs of 5 supermax DE blades at clicks for just less than R55. Try that with cartridge blades.
 
I have never been able to get as close and smooth a shave with a disposable one than with either a DE or straight razor. Also, the quality of the shave is only part of it. wet shaving isn't for everyone, and if you see shaving is merely a chore that needs to get done, then you are better of not going anywhere near a DE or straight razor (though, you can still make good time with either with a little practice).

Personally the whole process of wet shaving is more meditative than anything else. It gives me an hour or clearing my head and to do some serious introspection. For that hour I don't have to worry about anything or anyone else, it's just me time. A lot of people don't get that.

But that's just me :-)

Totally agree, the price of the blades is as ridiculously cheap as those cartridges are ridiculously expensive. In fact the cartridge prices are the very reason I switched to DE blades in the first place.

I haven't used a straight razor but with all honesty there is no difference for me between my DE or disposable razors. I still lather up with the brush either way and I get a smooth shave every time.

That said I may have plenty of spare time on my hands but I'm not going to waste an hour of it shaving. :)
 
So I'm bringing an old discussion back to life here, sorry. I have been shaving with either a DE razor or a shavette for the last year and love both. Best blades I could find locally is the Gillette Minora blades. Supermax is way to blunt for my taste, and I only use Lion blades if I have nothing else. My local p&p decided to stop stocking the Minora blades for some reason, so after panicking for about 5 minutes :P I googled at found them at Makro, R300 for the entire carton. (thats 100 blades, so R3 a blade). after that consider: I have used a single blade in my DE razor for 4 shaves already and it still feels sharp. Will probably change it out after 5 shaves, regardless if it starts tugging or not.
