Oneplus 6

sand_man. Interesting to know. Well, returns will be a mission no matter where you get from. So you're not giving up much by sourcing from China I suppose.

For sure, I dread the day! I think if a ever cracked a screen it would be easier just to order a replacement and DIY. Really wish there was local support for OP...

I have no clue if things have changed, but based on my experience importing OnePlus Ones this is what you might be in for:

14% import duty on everything but shipping: $623.90/R7803.79 x 14% = R1092.53
15% VAT on new total: (R1092.53+R7803.79=) R8896.32 x 15% = R1334.45
Consignment fee from DHL: R200 (could be more, but being conservative)

Total fees: R2626.98

Added to R8693.11 ($695), your grand total might be around R11 320.09.

Don't think one pays VAT on phones?
I've always only paid import duty. That's through Amazon though.

You pay VAT on pretty much everything. Amazon includes VAT for most countries in their prices, so I guess for SA too.

Sorry, I meant duties. You shouldn't be paying duties on it.

Edit. Below, fees are 15%.

Just looked up the latest schedule:
http://www.sars.gov.za/AllDocs/Lega...im-Tariff-2012-06 - Schedule No 1 Part 2B.pdf
(URL indicates 2012, but document has 2018 in header)

If that's correct, the duty has been reduced from 14% to 9%.

Unless someone along the way has mislabelled the items being imported (technically a crime, and risks confiscation if discovered), there's no avoiding the duty and VAT.

To update the earlier estimate of mine:

Import duty: $623.90/R7798 x 9% = R701.82
VAT on new total: (R7798+R701.82=) R8499.82 x 15% = R1274.97
DHL consignment fee: R200 (or more)
Total: R2176.79

Added to $695/R8686.67 is a grand total of R10 863.46.

I don't see how the amount won't be that at a minimum when not ordering from Amazon.

I've been importing phones and laptops from Amazon for a while. I have not once paid duties on them. I know for a fact laptops are duty free. There are plenty other electronics that are also duty free. And I would assume phones are too, as I haven't paid any duties on them.

We're not talking about Amazon though. It's well known that they try to include certain importing costs in their international prices. Laptops are indeed duty-free. You can check for yourself the document that I linked. Cellphones definitely don't look to be exempted, and when I imported OnePlus Ones several times via mail forwarding services they weren't exempted.

Item is at 'Clearance event,JOHANNESBURG - SOUTH AFRICA'.

I should get the lovely call tomorrow to defile me.

I should have delivered it to my bro in Australia. His wife is coming to SA this next week.
Fun fact. In Australia, customs are only applied for items greater then $1000.

Yea, it's all rather puzzling. I saw now Aramex has tablets and cell phones listed at 7% duties.

Phone should be delivered tomorrow.

...let's not talk about duties, if you know what I'm saying.;-)

Another camera test :)

Well let us know anyway. Will help knowing what the charges are these days.

Just got my oneplus 6 :) This phone is quite the upgrade from my old Nexus 5...

Not sure if I can post this here but here is my referral link to get $20 off accessories from the oneplus website...:
