Hey all.

Calling out any Onrus or Hermanus residents if I can!

I'm moving to Onrus at the beginning of November, and I am looking into internet options.

I'm not quite sure where to begin. I've heard the ADSL situation there is quite poor with constant drops and sluggish speeds. Got off the phone with Telkom a few minutes ago, and they can offer the particular property a 4mbps line but they cannot guarantee quality (ha), they couldn't even tell me where the nearest exchange was, she told me that it wasn't showing up on the map.

Started looking into other options, a friend recommended http://www.bdcwireless.co.za/#!prices/c1739 and their uncapped Wireless offerings, but that's quite a steep price point for what you get.

Anybody have any stories or advice?

Cheers.

Good move, love it out there (for weekends :) )

We find the DSL choppy at best. Sometimes its perfect, other times far from it.

On the Wireless Internet side of things, having only tested one of the providers, I wasn't impressed. Having said that, the test site was in the valley.

The current setup which works for weekends away is a primary DSL connection, with mobile broadband backup using an Afrihost SIM. (3G/LTE is limited if available, so check beforehand with MTN at your address)

Hermanus is where SkyWire started, but not so sure if they still give good service, they have highsite on the mountain. Sonic wireless give good service in Kleinmond and CPT, so I guess in Hermanus as well..

Telkom give good service in town, we have a 20 mbps line

Sonic is in Hermanus as well now. They have a shop in the Gateway Centre.

Suburb & street?

There's an exchange at 28 Main Rd, opposite Rheezicht Crescent.

Hey guys, everybody, thanks so much for the replies!

I'll be staying at - El Dorado, Main Road, Onrus, 7201. It's a small holding. Doesn't actually have a number! Here's it on Google maps http://i.piandcake.com/13pUX

Mobile data isn't a solution for me just because of my work and data consumption. Would bankrupt myself, quickly.

ADSL was my first go to, just something familiar, but the property had ADSL 2-3 years ago, and apparently it constantly dropped. That's why I am hesitant. Maybe they've improved the service over the past few years, just don't want to pay to get a line installed, only to have it bomb.

That's actually super close. Like 1km walk, ha. Where do you stay ponder? What kinda service are you getting?

I have 6 Mbps ADSL in Westcliff (nearby to Onrus) and it's stable...

That is actually pretty close. Maybe it is worth trying ADSL first before paying the large antenna installation fee.

I've been in contact with technicians from B360 Wireless and Sonic Wireless, both seem quite promising actually. About a thousand per month for 4mbps uncapped / unshaped. I'm a bit hesitant for Wireless services because, well, I have absolutely zero experience with it. Gonna get them both to come do a site survey and see what they say.

Making some progress.

Nothing, ha. Moving with my girlfriend. Just stringing up a hammock and working from there. Just need reliable internet to do said work...

You are quite some distance from me actually, so my experience won't be relevant to yours. Your cabling on the small holding will be the big issue.

Yah. That's why they cancelled their line a few years back. Was kinda hoping there had been improvements. I'm hoping that when they do the Wireless site surveys we get some good results.

Or you could replace the Telkom line if you're feeling brave.

You've got trees around there that might be an issue.

About 1400km north east of there. Service here is great thanks :D
I just looked the location of the exchange up on the net. There 'should' be a main cable route running down the main road so you might get lucky there if the cabling on the smallholding is fine.

Yah, the difficultly is that there's no way to know, I just kinda have to dive in and hope for the best. So making a decision between Wireless and DSL is difficult.

Guess the site surveys will help me make the decision.

Hi Story.................I live within a few hundred meters from you and would gladly assist and
give you input regarding internet connectivity in Onrus....

In the recent past I went through the whole exercise of sourcing the best solution.

Send me a message for my my phone number

Also from onrus, best place to live in south africa:)Where u coming from.

Yah, the general consensus seems to be ADSL over Wireless. Do you have first hand experience with any of the Wireless providers? B360 and Sonic seem confident in being able to provide a constant and stable 4mbps connection.

Yeh, they'll be my neighbours! Can see their property if I take a walk through my little forest, ha. Coming from Cape Town. Once upon a time I was a designer, then I was a developer, and now I am somehow a product manager / designer.

Think I need to try Telkom first, and if it fails... move to Wireless. Interested to see how the site surveys go next Saturday.

Yes had bdc worked great, and it wil work where u are,as I live very close to u,its just very expensive. And I'm pretty sure u wil get adsl at that house...

My partner and I are moving from Cape Town. I've just never enjoyed office life or the city, hey. I have wanted to move somewhere quiet for a long time. This came up, told my company I would be working remote from here out, and voila.

Yeh. Gonna do the site surveys next week, then likely go for an ADSL solution, and keep the Wireless option as a backup.
