Open View PVR

So update on the "32Gb" that was actually 64Gb PVR memory sticks...
I think that these sticks must be USB 1.1 and not USB 2.0 as there is definitely a speed issue with them.
When pausing live TV it says recording but when resuming playback there are hiccups (so like 5 or 10 second gaps) which results in this feature being unusable.
When playing back a recording (so something scheduled) some of the files play fine, others have random hiccups in them.
I have swopped the sticks between my two decoders, formatted them numerous times with the end result being the same.
Trying to explain this issue to someone at Ellies results in raised blood pressure and them saying take it back to the store or format the sticks.
I personally feel if they going to lock this feature up to use only their devices, don't use junk quality sticks...

For anyone having issues with "auto-standby" on the NA9200 decoder, here is the cure:


The auto standby is on, to disable it please follow the below steps:
Press the BLUE, YELLOW, GREEN and the RED decoder button, then press OK to disable the standby function.
 
My 32GB USB PVR stick stopped working on Thursday. I've had it for quite a while (probably close to a year). I read through this thread and just some comments:
The stick is not empty. I did plug it into my PC once and did see a folder of some PVR software.
All in all it is primitive and frustrating.
I found that if you filled it up with recordings and started deleting earlier files that you probably create fragmentation. New recordings then begin to jump, but older ones don't. You'd record the news on eTV and it would jump from 15 minutes in the recording to 28 minutes (and you'd miss the sport and the start of the weather). Reformatting the stick solved this before, but now it is just not identified by the OpenView decoder, so I cannot format it on the decoder. When I now insert it into my PC the PC says it needs to format it to use it - which it previously did not insist on. Anyone have advice?
 
Interesting comment. I don't have enough personal knowledge about this decoder. is there not a "format routine" available on decoder menu somewhere to use instead of doing a PC format, which might "mess around with" the files and possibly a folder created on the memory stick which the decoder is looking for.
This is the same issue and stunt MC pulls with their decoders which on the olde SD PVR was pretty standard and easy to sort out but has become progressively harder with the newer ones. MC provides for a reformat routine on their decoders. I can try and find out for you, but it could take me a while.

You lucky it still worked in the beginning. I bought a 32Gb last year and it skipped and jumped from day one even after reformatting on the decoder. Maybe used it for 5 recordings at most. Not using it any longer.
 
Thank you HeinrichL for your answer above to our pvr stick problem. We bought both the 32gb and 64gb usb sticks and BOTH freeze/jump/hiccup in playback mode on our NA9200 model decoder. Openview refuses to acknowledge this error in their products. The call centre merely tells the public to format the sticks. Waste of time and good money.
 
Can you use normal USB sticks? If not then what is so different from the ones they sell?

Fragmentation makes no difference on logical media and indeed the recommendation is to not do any regular defragmenting as it only reduces the lifespan of the device.

Yes, somewhere in this thread there is a post about how to get a "normal" memory stick to work with the decoder.
It is all about Openview having to guarantee copy protection, and I suspect to prevent sticks from being interchanged between decoders.

BTW, only the NA9200 and the DSD 4165 is PVR capable OpenView decoders. No sign that Openview intends making the older decoder pvr capable.

What file format does OpenView use to store the recorded files? H.264, .Ps, .TS, .Mpg, .TSV .Avi .Vob - ect...

Is it easy to transfer recorded files, from the flash drive to PC for playback or conversion? (No issues asking to format - using Recovery options to access files)

How is the quality?

Can you record a channel while watching another?

Can you bookmark and record a specified program while not at home.

How fast does the EPG populate and is it accurate?

Sorry for all the questions, but these media moguls always try to make everything unnecessarily complicated.
 
Morning, I see this thread is still alive.
I have, I think, the 64Gb stick, which worked. Now the story..
I have 2x NA9200 OVHD decoders.
I enabled the stick in one of the decoders and it worked, with all the normal jumping and glitches.
I then pulled it out, stuck it in my Ubuntu Linux laptop to see how it recorded content. It was playable on my Laptop.
I stuck it back into my Decoder, it still worked fine.
Then, I had a visitor, who was wanting to watch something else, so I plugged the Stick into my 2nd decoder, where it would play back recorded content, no problem.
This is where the issue comes in; I left the Stick in the 2nd Decoder and set up the Recording list, which it accepted.
When it came to playback a week later, there was nothing on the stick.. now the 2 Decoders do not recognise it, neither does my Linux Laptop.
Is there a way to revive it or do I turf it?

I've recently been getting this mail/envelope icon appear towards the right side of the image.
How do I get rid of that thing?
I've gone into the menu and deleted all content in the "B-Mail" section. So there's no other mail to view or delete, and I've rebooted the decoder as well, but that pesky envelope icon just will not go away.

I sent them an email about this and the response was less than satisfactory.
They said the contract expired and therefore they took it off air. They also said they will be adding new channels in future.
The same happened with the Kruiskyk Christian channel.
This is really bad form in my opinion.
Renew the contract, don't take it off air.
My opinion is that they took it offline due to no advertising revenue. Speaking of which. The ads on Openview has increased massively. Almost to the point that anything is unwatchable.

You could try to reset the decoder under system settings in the menu. Choose factory reset.

I did the factory reset earlier. Same thing. That envelope icon is still there.
It goes away when you press the "B-Mail" option, but as soon as you exit that and go back to the channel you're watching, it shows up again right away. Quite annoying.

I know this may sound strange, but are you sure the bmail button on the remote is not stuck?

The remote supplied with this particular decoder does not have such a button. Probably an older model?

No different than Dstv. Will stop in the middle of a video to show ads. Used to be only a minute long but now it's 3 minutes or sometimes even 5 minutes. They have these weird times for shows. Not like overseas where a show is an hour long and then during non prime time it would be 50 minute slots. They would actually have shows like from 19:33 to 20:07 making them clash with other shows.
