Recently moved to Vox Telecoms on Openserve. I was previously with Vodacom as an ISP and Fibre provider. I was also wondering how I was getting higher than my actual line speed with Vodacom but not getting the same with Vox on Openserve.

On Vodacom I had a 200/100 Line speed and Speedtest showed (As per December 2021):
- Download = 240 ~ 250 Mbps
- Upload = 90 ~ 97 Mbps

Vox Telecoms on Openserve currently running 500/250 Line speed Speedtest showed (As per today)
- Download = 471 ~ 478 Mbps
- Upload = 241 ~ 244 Mbps

All tests done over Ethernet and MTU is set to 1492.

So this proves then that Vox is capping the line speed on the data account. Really lame. It's literally a 50mbs plus difference compared to Afrihost and Cool Ideas. Lets see maybe I can get them to change the data account profiles for 500Mbps. My ticket with them is still open and currently they are creating an openserve test account for me.

I honestly thought it was the capability of my devices that were capping out rather than my line but then I did a speedtest on a friends 1Gbps line and and I was getting 920Mbps or so. About 3 weeks ago when Openserve came out to activate my Fibre line they brought their own router and plugged it into the ONT. To confirm activation they made me run a speedtest via LAN on my laptop and speeds where around 525Mbps if I recall correctly (I thought this was a fluke by my laptop at that time)

If possible could you keep me updated on this endevour as I will also log a ticket with them in this regards. Hoping you’re successful.

You will see, the OpenServe test account will also run at full speed. ~530Mbit :) Been down this road with OpenServe capacity in my area. This is 100% on Vox. Good luck, let us know how the quest goes. Vox is one of the few providers with low US latency but sucks that they cap speeds :(

Correct, I also believe 100% that once they give me a working test account from openserve, it will also be around 530 Mbps.

Happy to give you a test account from our side?

Thanks @PBCool for your willingness to help. For now i just want to see what Vox has to say. I just received a working test account from them supplied by Openserve and as we expected the results are correct. Around 532Mbps down.
I will keep you guys posted on what Vox has to say. I have at least now moved away from a sales agent and am speaking to a level 2 FTTH engineer. He thanked me for the provided tests and said that he will be escalating the fault to their core team. Let's see what happens.

Highly unlikely this is something they are going to bother changing to be honest.

If i recall Vox provide a mikrotik router?

RSAWEB provided us a mikrotik router as well at work and it was configured incorrectly/badly which resulted in us getting rather poor speeds (we on Octotel and 50/50) but we would only get around half our line speed 25/25.

Could be a similar problem here, RSAWEB do not know how to clamp a download speed on our setup correctly with their network so now they took that setting off and we running at 230/50

Not the case from my side. I signed the indemnity to use my own router with Vox. (Linksys WRT ACM3200)

Th speeds I quoted earlier were with my Linksys. You are right though, when initially installing the Mikrotik Router last month I used it for a week to confirm all was well before substituting with my own router. Speeds were between 230 ~ 250 Down and 240 ~ 242 Up. Openserve did a port reset and all those weird and wonderful things. Only to find out the MTU setting was an issue on my Mikrotik. Once Vox remotely corrected that, speeds shot up to 477 Down but never any higher.

I still get the same speeds using my Linksys till now.

477 Down and 242 Up

What was the MTU and what was it changed to as a matter of interest?

On the Mikrotik it was set to 1500. Vox then changed it to 1492 but after substituting my Linksys which is set to ”Auto” on MTU I still get peak speeds. Not sure if it’s perhaps a Mikrotik thing.

Odd, my Mikrotik pppoe has a max MTU of 1480 and sets to that when dialled. Was the default for pppoe
