Openserve 500Mbps speedtest (different ISPs)

This is exactly what I'm working towards. They are now busy creating a new account for me as the test account they provided works fine. If this still does not solve it then it's time to jump ship. The reason I created this thread was to see what other ISPs get and ultimately to inform you guys about this.

If i'm a new user about to get a 500mbps line on openserve then I sure as hell won't go with Vox if the speed is 480Mbps for everyone. But lets see what happens with the new account :) I'll keep everyone posted.

Unfortunately upon signing up they do inform you that even though it is month to month. If you cancel within a 12 month period there will be a clawback of installation costs amount to R 2875.00. Kinda a catch 22.

Over the weekend been getting 430 to 460 down even upgraded the router cause I thought that could be an issue and 220 to 242 up, Fiber is down again they stole some cables lol

Update: Got another test account from Vox after my "new account" which for some weird reason was just the same account still gave me 480Mbps.

The test account from Vox is giving me the full 532Mbps. I told them via email that I should just keep the test account and we forget about this whole thing:ROFL:
 
Final update. Got a call from Vox this morning. They made changes to my account. Many of you said I would not get this fixed. Well i'm back on my own account and it's been working 100% the whole day. So they have definitely made changes.

So my suggestion is. Those of you who also only got 480~ Mbps test again and if you are not getting 530+ Mbps speak to Vox.

We were actually about to test a special 1000/500 Mbps package on Openserve, the issue is the cost of setup + line rental is double until Openserve decides to drop a natural 1000/500 Mbps line.

The cost for 1000/500 on the current system would be like R3000, plus it will only max out at 500mbps for anything single-threaded, but most tasks that require that speed are multi-threaded anyway.

Don't bother with that. You need a proper router and as you said, it will be way too expensive.
I also found that OpenServe does not have the capacity in all areas. I know this first hand because nighttime that 1gbit drops to ~400Mbit, so you might end up doing more support than you want to :p

If going Mikrotik you need something that can handle > 1Gbit without fasttrack, something like a RB750 is not going to cut that :)

Thats exactly it, it's not worth it but we know a few places where it is possible. But our 500mbps Openserve users are pretty happy with the over-provisioning getting around 530 down and 270 up or so.

What we are actually hoping for is Openserve moving over to a more symmetrical speed system, but we do actually like the concept of the 200/100 and 500/250 packages, as most users rarely need the upload speed. Would be nice for the ones that do though (Cloud backups etc).

Remember, OpenServe plan capacity based on demand. They offer 500Mbit so they plan for that. They don't plan for 1 guy suddenly maxing 2x 500Mbit lines. This is what happened in my area and both lines dropped, unless early morning.

It works, but not as well as you would hope. If I redo this test tomorrow morning 7AM I'll have 940Mbit (limited due to me not having a 2.5gbit nic)

Yup it really depends, Openserve is rolling out nice new stuff in Glenwood, hope to test it as more clients go live.
 
Just did speed tests with Vox on openserve line, did a broadband connection direct to the ont, got speeds around 200mb on a 500mb line. Reconnected the router and did the same texts and averaged around 470mb.
Surely the speed thru the ont should be faster than thru the router?

I'm Openserve/Afrihost and get lower speeds directly through the ONT. Around 536 through router and 475 through ONT.

Finally got my Openserve test account today to run the tests for them (after having my ticket closed 3 times without responses). My findings were exactly the same as yours. So guess it time to play “Follow-up with Vox” till it gets fixed.

Good luck man just keep trying mine got fixed. I can now run speed tests at 532Mbs instead of 480Mbps and my OCD is as happy as can be seeing above 500 speeds :D
