OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread (Pt2)

You know, it really is time we as consumers did something about the 1 calender month cancelation notice that so many ISPs employ. This is 2014, there is really no more excuses to be made for it and it's high time ISPs got rid of it. We can't just keep rolling over and accepting that an ISP is going to shaft us for another month if we're canceling an account. Because that's the only reason ISPs keep this policy around, because they get another month of payment out of a dissatisfied customer.

BS. We can be signed up with an ISP in under an hour and you can upgrade your account to a higher tier in no time at all, but if you want to cancel then suddenly you need to give a month's notice? What? It's not like the ISP is losing money during the month after your account has been cancelled or anything.

I propose we start some kind of initiative to have this shady practice abolished. Maybe get everyone you know to cancel their accounts at the start of every month, then uncancel it at the end of the month if they plan to keep using it. If enough people do this every month it will become such an administrative schlep for ISPs that they will have to do something about it.

Everybody should cancel and stop their debit order for the end of May citing the p1ss poor performance as the reason. I would like to see them try and sue all for the month's payment.

The ensuing arguments and resulting lost time might (will) be more effort than what it is worth, but I agree with you in principle.

AFAIK, it wouldn't affect your credit record in any way, in any case. But don't quote me on it though, I am not 100% sure.

I'll definitely contact the bank to ensure OpenWeb doesn't try collect on 1st July. Good luck trying to get the funds and all the bank charges back!

Already done so, and made sure my lawyer is aware of incoming legal threat from the Doctor.

Well done Koosi! :Thumbs Up:

Everyone seems to back down when they hear the word Legal. Magistrates never got into that position by being stupid. If you can prove poor peformance/service from the ISP, I can guarantee you that no Magistrate will find for the plaintiff (OW). I have taken snapshots of Business hours as well as After hours speed-tests. I have a copy of all my communications with OW. Coupling this with the commentary of this thread, there is no way in hell that OW ( unless they are connected to some of our politically inclined cadres) can win this situation.

Even if it's only a few rand, more people should do what you do. We need to turn this 30-day notice period around so that it becomes such a headache for ISPs that they just get rid of it altogether.

I agree, they should realise that we are the consumers, we pay their salary and that they are not doing us a favour.
I am prepared to pay for quality, but I have noticed sadly that in SA, you are wooed just short of a BJ, but once they have your money, you are dropped like a hot potato!

I can prove the poor performance, have video recordings of the throttling, the GMail problems, and the problems with iTunes/Appstore.
I can also, if they really want to get heavy with me, produce all my correspondence with Telkom when they investigated my line.

I think that if people are going to go forward with cancelling their debit orders, they should let OW know that the other person on the account will foot the bill next month.

I think they always used the star system, all IS resellers (and thats all OW is) are subject to the it.
Mr Beep saying they didn't is a load of BS.

Plugg =IS =Star System
Web Africa =IS Reseller =Star System
BuzyBuy =IS Reseller =Star System
Incredible Connection =Star System

I suspect IS has gotten stricter with their Star System and OW users are feeling its pinch

^^ This!

Who else has had a schizophrenic relationship with their ISP?? :D :p

reading some of these comments...

"hell hath no fury like a geek with slow interwebs" - - i totally relate, slow intermittent internet = unbridled rage

The Other ISP don't require 1 month notice.
Afrihost don't require 1 month notice.

There is already two. They can so can the others, its just there to milk you... Stop signing up with ISPs that require this and they will have to change it. Simple.

I can think of:

Plugg
Incredible Connection
Afrihost
Axxess

All no 30 day!

I thought OpenWeb accounts were not usage monitored and were not subject to throttling. Eat as much as you can?
They phased usage tracking in after people here specifically asked for it. ;)

Yet another contradiction, which now points at a star based system.
I suspect thats why OW is prone to the "here is a new account to fix it"...i.e. they swap them out when the stars become problematic.

OpenWeb.co.za will be offering its affordable Everyday Uncapped ADSL for FREE for the rest of December 2013.

"Everyday Uncapped has been created for home users who wish to gain access to an affordable uncapped package without being worried about being throttled."

"It has become commonplace for greedy ISPs' to throttle their clients after a magic amount of usage on uncapped. OpenWeb strongly disagrees with this practise. It is for this reason that our accounts are completely unthrottled."

So said Keoma Wright in December 2013.

Well, if you say so sir!!

Thank goodness this is my final month with them.

The Everyday part will be be free because it does not work during the day. Everynight will be charged for! :p

Over 900ms latency tonight playing GW2, was going to reply to Keoma's "Our network has not experienced latency or packet loss for a number of years now." email, but will rather send in my cancellation asap.
