MrBEEP, i get that the network is busy, but shaping nntp to less than 10KB/s is taking it a bit far. I

I've been experiencing shaping on NNTP over the past week as well and it's pretty severe tonight - barely done 100MB today. Torrents haven't hit above 10 kb/s either. I fully understand that around 7AM-7PM we can expect shaping to impact affect the quality, but it's after 8PM.

Browsing, streaming and gaming is all fine, just the downloading that's hit a snag.

My torrent speeds are pathetic tonight with barely 30 kb/sec on a 2 MB Gold account....

Internet is barely usable tonight...:(

Haven't had a chance to reset the router to default yet...

That right there is a problem between your computer and the exchange. Don't think MrBeep can do much about that.

What do your line stats look like?

Pretty terrible...:(

Downstream Upstream
Line Coding(Trellis): On On
SNR Margin (dB): 101 130
Attenuation (dB): 570 315
Output Power (dBm): 167 122
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 2592 792
Rate (Kbps): 2048 512
D (interleaver depth): 1 1
Delay (msec): 0.13 0.25

HEC Errors: 0 1
OCD Errors: 0 0
LCD Errors: 0 0

Total ES: 0 0

But why is the international test timing out long after the second hop to the exchange? Perhaps I really do need to reset the router to default? Although I only installed this router yesterday, so I'm not sure how that would help...

Not good :(

This is definitely router or Telkom line related. I have even changed your current profile to Platinum to test. It is achieving 38.2Mbps on our 40Mbps test line

You can pretty much ignore everything after the second hop if the second hop is already in the 3 digit territory. Nothing is going to work very well if your router cannot communicate efficiently with the exchange.

Kindly PM me your ADSL username so that we can investigate

There are no network issues tonight.

It seems like Telkom is the cause of most of the issues experienced.

Our 12 x test lines are maxing out on torrents. We are using from Vanilla to Platinum accounts and everything inbetween testing concurrently.

Speedtest is running on full speed 2 mb, torrents running at 10 kb/sec, not sure how that's Telkom, seems more like a shaping issue again.

Thanks MrBeep.

Second router in two days so definitely not a router issue. Works perfectly at other times of the day.

I guess this is just Telkom's congestion at the exchange. Nothing to be done...:(

Ping to the exchange (2nd hop, I presume) averages over 1014ms at the moment...

I first need to get Mike Tyson to pretend to train them. I could always convince him there's an acting job in a schitty movie here. That should be enough...

Hi F1 Fan,

I have had a look at the account, and all seems ok. Browsing is running well on my side. Downloads are a bit slow, as the network is very busy today, but we believe things should quieten down at around 18:00 to 19:00.

Further quote "There are many variables involved in ADSL.

Our portion is only the data. Then you have your hardware, Telkom and their entire network to contend with.

We try and keep lines in all major centres of SA so that we can test from across the country and pickup any issues as they occur"

Im still getting a maximum of 140kb/s on my local news servers. It's moving up and down all the time. Torrents have never worked on my account, I'm never able to get decent speeds.

While I understand both hardware and telkom can play a role, what I cannot understand is why other ISP account work perfectly when connected. I get full speed. That leads me to deduce, hardware is not an issue. Furthermore, I never had problems when I had the 1meg account. Never. Since the upgrade, I've had problems constantly. So again, it's too much of a coincidence that the account suddenly is not working. I get that on your side you are not finding fault, but on my side, I am. I would like nothing more than an account that reflects what I'm actually paying for. Believe it or not I don't enjoy mailing support every week about this problem. And quite honestly, given that I have been with you guys for so long, you should really been doing more to fix my problem, instead of saying "it seems fine on our side". Well, Im not browsing from your side, now am I?

Thanks MrBeep.
