OpenWeb ADSL Feedback Thread

Internet is really sluggish here (Cape Town), yet strangely latency appears to be excellent.
It's not related to the Openweb account as all of my accounts are slow, including Vox,
Afrihost (MTN), and @lantic (SAIX).

If I run a Speedtest, it seems to flatline for halp the test and then suddenly bursts to
full speed, resulting in a good test result even though the internet is slow.

I'm having the same fun in Cape Town as well, but my SpeedTest shows things are pretty normal, yet it takes forever to load pages like MYBB etc. Might be an issue that's not related to OpenWeb, it's gotten a bit better now after 17:00, as expected, but it's not running smoothly. If you have that many accounts, and they all show the same thing, let's blame the bunny!

My other accounts are all free accounts offering small quantities of data that I use as a backup. I have a feeling the erratic Speedtest results are as a result of my new Internet Security Suite's firewall, as everything is working well now, but the Speedtest results are still wonky.

I agree here. I would prefer to see ISP's push some money back into the networks.

Unfortunately with competing ISP's dropping pricing by over 50% each time Telkom offers an 8% discount, I do not see this happening anytime soon.

We have to remain competitive, even if it means increasing contention ratios.

I would much rather prefer to halve the contention ratio opposed to doubling it.

I was hoping Telkom would come to the party and actually give the ISP's more capacity free of charge. I am all for improving the network rather than dropping prices. I would much rather have full speed 24/7 on a 2meg line rather than some speed on a 4meg line.

I just used that as an example, I'm having trouble with several sites, some of the servers I connect to in JHB etc. It's better now, after 17:00, Skype is still an issue though. Sounds like there are problems all over though, there's issues at work and they are in a different Telkom area and with a completely different ISP.

So what's you game plan going to be with the inevitable line upgrades? Are things going to stay as they are, or are we all going to get speed upgrades with double the contention? It's a tradeoff either way.

Now I can't open OpenWeb.co.za to check on prices for the next line speed... Haha. I figured, if Telkom's going to bump up my line speed, I would probably have to get the next size data connection from my ISP? The saving on the Telkom DSL rental amount would make the difference I'll be paying a bit less, wouldn't it?

We haven't decided yet.

We first need to do the sums and see how badly it will affect clients if we double the amount of people sharing capacity.

I think we will probably end up offering clients a choice. More will follow soon

And there's always the factor of your subscriber base increasing purely because ADSL can now be considered fast.

I see some complaints on the TI thread about some users achieving only half their line-speed during the past weekend whereas OpenWebber's have had a fully unshaped experience.

Is there an option to "pause" an account for a few weeks? I am going away for over a months later this year and it would be nice not having to pay while not using the service.

Problem is I can't cancel and resubscribe as I am on one of the specials and also it is from the middle of month

So the thunderstorm decides to roll in when the internet's totally unshaped :(

Axxess and Afrihost's shaping policies are crappy. Once you are "managed", you stay that way until they think you can go back, with the shaping happening 24/7. That sucks.

Hi MrBeep,

just a question, what time do you normally hit that magic button for gold clients during the week? Things seems to be a bit on the slow side tonight.

Tonight the network was unshaped at 19:00 for Gold clients :)

Hi Guys

Anyone experience slow speeds in tableview currently? Been this way since last night, speed test starts normal but then drops to half line speed. Latency has also increased.

Just want to know if Telkom is screwing around again?

Any reason you're doing a speedtest to George?

My speed is the worst I've seen it in a long time this morning.
