Naturally, during office hours, (especially today) there will be increased shaping as all the corporate and business clients are back online performing updates, downloads and syncs, making the network very busy.

This should clear in the next day or so, which will automatically decrease shaping levels again

I understand that there will be "increased" shaping today, but is that all that is going on?

Right now my connection is mostly unusable and when it does work I'm shaped to 5% of my capacity (maxing out at 10KB/s on a 2MB line) - this has been consistent throughout the day. Shaping should not make my connection unusable, just slower (maybe 25-50% of capacity depending on network load). Even on rolling cap accounts the throttling (once thresholds are reached) is faster than my current "unthrottled" connection.

I'm hoping that this an problem somewhere and not "acceptable" shaping during office hours. Because this just won't do. Have been a loyal customer for a very long time, and it's been years since it was this bad - except of course when there are problems somewhere on the network (or telkom).

I have logged an issue this morning, but have not heard anything back.

Also experiencing VERY slow speeds. I am in Pretoria. Back-up accounts from Afrihost and Webafrica running 100%.

I get that shaping during office hours is a thing, but please do go ahead and explain why then I am paying for a GOLD account and getting shaped to **** as if I wasn't paying for Gold...

This is getting out of control, man. Seacom down or not, fix this bs.

I am from Pretoria and the internet is dead slow still. My prepaid back-up accounts from other ISP runs at full line speeds. Something is wrong.

there is a 50KB/s improvement on my side the last 15 min. Might be all the corporate people updated their stuff after the long weekend ,thus the net being slow.

No improvement here Snail, it's actually going even slower at the moment

Now it is spiking between 50 & 70 KB/s. Guess I'll have to get something else to keep me busy while the net fix itself.

Could not agree with you more wheunis.
This is Bull##t. I am on a 10M GOLD account and I get speeds of between between 30KB/s and 40KB/s!!!!!! when downloading during working hours.
When I query this I get told the following:
"As previously explained, shaping will be enforced during heavy network periods, of which today will be one of them due to everyone returning back to work.
I see you have used over 90GB in 2 days.
I would rather look at your overall throughput, and not monitor every byte during shaping periods, as you are getting SUPERB value for your money.
A 10Mbps Uncapped Unshaped service sells for over R3500 per month. If this is what you require, I would suggest you upgrade to this. You will then get full speed 24 / 7"
I am not asking for full speed 24/7.
I did use 90GB over the last 2 days - so what!!!!! - this was at a period when no shapping was prevalent on the account - do you mean to tell me that I am being shapped because of the amount I have downloaded ????? If so, then the GOLD account is not what it has been sold to me as.
Yes, I understand that during business hours that shapping will happen - now comes the crux of the matter - how much shapping - is it 10%, 20%, 30%????? - nobody seems to want to commit to a worst case scenario (all I get is an answer that it "depends on how busy the network is". It's like buying a Ferrari capable of 300Km/h - drives great for a few days then speed drops down to 30Km/h - when queried you get told that, well, it depends at what time you drive it).

Well, I pay a premium for a premium account and service - so where is it?

What makes my 10M GOLD account any different to an After Hours 10M account? (besides the premium price difference that I pay?) - it cannot be because of my speeds during business hours.
What speeds are the 10M vanilla accounts running at - hell, they must be using carrier pigeons!!!
Why do other people on the same 10M GOLD accounts generally have fair speed, even during shapped times, compared to my supposedly identical 10M GOLD account???
Why is it that you guys change my account login when I complain, the account then runs great during business hours, and then after a few days I am back to square one - the only difference is the amount i have downloaded - it seems as if the systems says "hold on, he has downloaded too much so we will now apply severe shapping to his new account".

Sorry, MrBEEP, but it appears to me that I am being shapped to hell because of the amount that I download. So GOLD is no different to other accounts available in the market; it is not a "premium" account - where other providers work on a basis of if you fall in the top 20% of downloaders, etc, etc OpenWeb uses "shapping" as its wording.

Well, normally my 2MB Gold Uncapped gives me full line speed of between 200 & 204KB/s after 5PM during the week. During office hours it drops to between 150 & 165KB/s.

Why is it at 50KB/s now - due to shaping or throttling?

I can live with the 150-165KB/s during office hours, but not a third of that speed it is now.

And then it dropped to 10KB/s.

I do not even DL anything and get 50 & 70 KB/s on my 2MB line during the day, normally sitting at 150
+. I am a normal browser and gamer and get shaped to hell. But lets see, maybe all the "Corporate Companies" do the updates today and everything is back to normal tomorrow.

2Mb Silver Uncapped but exact same as described above. I'm currently getting 20KB/s from a local site, so its not just international.

my line had been more or less dead the whole day. 2KB/s... thats unacceptable on a gold account. i can't even browse most local sites while international is a lost case.

international officially dead. even speedtest show almost 0KB/s.

please fix this!!!

Update:

There is still currently a network issue, causing slow speeds.

Engineers are attending. We do apologise for the inconvenience

The issue is now affecting more than just the Western Cape, and has spread country wide.

We are waiting for further feedback from Internet Solutions regarding this

4:40pm - 10mb Gamer King account, Durban:

1080p YouTube - 1.1mBps / 8.8mbit (max)
HTTP international download - 450kBps / 3.6mbit
NNTP (Astraweb) - 130kBps / 1mbit

Shaping is the most aggressive on NNTP, otherwise pretty good

Things should improve slightly after around 17:30 as the network becomes alot quieter overall, however, the issue is not yet resolved.
