Just when I thought it couldn't get worse, here comes the 150ms+ pings

Gamer's King - 24/7 gaming priority my arse!

Unfortunately not.

During peak, Business clients that pay for a low contention ratio receive priority.

It is the business clients that subsidize the network so that home consumers can download after hours at full speed. It is the only humanly way possible to afford an uncapped account below R1000 per month.

Business clients log off at around 17:00 to 18:00, which them leaves a very large network empty, upon which we share the access.

Once Telkom drops their IPC cost by at least 50%, this dynamic changes, and we can suddenly offer more during weekdays.

I would suggest you load up a queue of downloads before you go and dream. Once you wake up, they will probably be done.

I understand how shaping works and why it must be implemented. What upsets me is that on a Gamers King 2mbs, I don't bother playing during the day, I tried it a few times, got lagged all over the place so I never bothered again. I'm hardly home during the days so the account works fairly well for me after hours, so I let that one slide as after hours I'm happy with the service. I do hope you can assist in answering the following questions Mr Beep:

Why does shaping have to be so excessive?

Why can't Openweb separate the shaping on different accounts and give priority to certain packages, for eg Gamers King during the day? (and live up to its claim that gaming is prioritized 24/7)

Why does Openweb advertise Gamers King as "Gaming is prioritized 24/7" when it clearly isn't? Is that not false advertising?

Openweb's excessive shaping during the day is akin to delivering the service as a "best effort", is it fair to advertise it the way you guys currently do?

Do the floodgates have to open at 5-6 PM? Your response of 60% of the month is unshaped does not sit well with me because majority of working class society have day-time jobs and at some point will have to sleep on a weeknight. Yes some people may queue up huge downloads before they go to bed, but they are a minority. So of that 60%, most people are asleep during 30% of that time. So can't Openwebs resources accommodate lifting the shaping earlier so that clients can get what they are paying for?
The service being unshaped while I'm dreaming is of no use to me.

It's easy to always blame the next person ie Telkom and most people hate Telkom, but some blame has to fall on the ISP. If a friend had to ask me about Openwebs service, I would tell them the truth, don't bother during the day but at night the network is really fast. Why can't Openweb improve their service to attract more customers, make more money and improve their network (and hopefully entice Telkom to drop their prices)?

Lastly, I am content with Openwebs service, content, not happy.

I look forward to your response Mr Beep.

There are no latency issues currently.

Kindly post a tracert result to www.openweb.co.za so that we can examine it.

I'm sick of this!! So now you are calling me a liar? I have sent you my tracert results before and you said everything was fine! Yet now and again I start lagging in game! My ping goes up (~150ms), I get spikes, all in all, an unenjoyable gaming experience!

This is really bull**** from Openweb!

I totally agree.

I am in bed at around 11. So essentially what this means is that I have only 4 hours each day to download (~1.5GB). That is pathetic!

At this rate capped ADSL (Obviously not Openweb's capped products) seems far more feasible and much cheaper!

Are you being serious? Your downloads can run all night. Who only downloads when they awake? Maybe you should slow down and read your feedback before you post.

Lol :D

I specifically try to do all my downloads when I'm asleep so it doesn't affect my usual internet usage.

He did not call you a liar. He asked for information to help solve your problem. And your tracert today might have high latency on a different hop than previously recorded.
How is he suppose to help people when you won't provide the needed information to do so?

20LEgend, you need to stop being an idiot. Forget about downloading 'stuff' during daytime.

You can't possibly expect to download during the day as well. If you want to, then pay for a better account. Unless you are on gold?

If I am downloading a good few GBs, I'd be more than happy to leave the download on overnight. But if I were to download something that's only 500mb, do you suggest that I leave my PC on while I sleep?

I think your logic is flawed, my friend, and maybe you should slow down and think before you post.

Well - I am pretty new to OW.

So far I have found that their technical side revolves around one guy and that phoning in and SMS doesn't work. Its - useless - in a word. I have already had the 'íts Telkom' and 'the router' excuses, so hopefully we are all over that now.

I have noticed the shaping ...... and at the moment, my home account during the day is like a throttled MWEB account, but at least - unlike MWEB - I get some speed overnight.

So, on the balance of probabilities and deciding on a kick in the nuts or nuts in a vice .... OW is still better than MWEB.

Well for what its worth i have been around the ISP block a few times and had more than 6 differant ISP accounts from Business Uncapped to all you can eat to whatever other accounts have been on offer. And frankly speaking i must say that i put my PC off from 8am until 6pm everyday except weekends and i would like to challenge any other ISP to better R397 .....60% unshaped and do around 600 gig a month download on a 4 meg line . Having said that i also think 500 to 600 gig a month by SA standerds @ R390 odd per month is good going.

These days most of the good movies are Blueray anyway and come in at around 8 to 30 gig.So therefore best thing to do is get a Seedbox @ around R120.00 per/mth and then that's when real life starts

As Mr Zoidberg says .do most of your downloading while you sleep. I am just loving it as the saying goes. My vote goes to OPENWEB by a long shot.

My small piece.

regards :):)

I don't mind having my downloads shaped between 8am-6pm but basic sites like Google Maps are painfully slow during the peak period.

I really am worried as to how the network will cope when Windows 8.1 releases.

Running good here like usual.

Streamed a 6.5GB movie over the weekend with it not having to buffer once. This is how internet should be :)

Your comprehension skills leave a lot to be desired. Go back and read my original message and please point out where I said I want OW to allow me to download stuff during the daytime. Same goes to you F1 fan.

Simple, shaping has no effect on browsing, and therefore by mentioning shaping we assumed you were referring to downloading. Learn your terminology before trying to act smart, Throttling would affect browsing, not shaping. If your account is running badly during the day, something must be wrong.

And I'm still waiting for either of you to point out where I said that I want to download stuff during the day. And if you could comprehend my original message, you'd realize that the gist of it was aimed at Gamers King and the fact that it mostly lags all over the place during the day. Research this forum, many have complained about lag, yet it's advertised as "Gaming Prioritized 24/7. I also questioned shaping and possible alternatives to it and Mr Beep addressed my query. At no point did I demand that I wanted super fast internet during the day. But like my mother always told me, there's no cure for dumb. I'll try to accommodate by drawing a picture next time around.

Based on the fact that HTTP browsing is not shaped 24/7 and that you said you are not happy about excessive shaping during daytime (on weekdays), so I assumed you were complaining about poor P2P/HTTP/whatever download speeds during daytime.

Gold uncapped....sorry...should have typed it out in full.

Yes, I know :D Gold uncapped FTW!
