Any authentication issues in Gauteng? I'm struggling to authenticate my OpenWeb account, support has provided me an alternative account but still no luck. My TelkomInternet account works fine.

No problems here for me, but I haven't tried to switch the router off. Certainly won't try it now...:D

There are no general issues currently.

Kindly drop me a PM so that I can take a look.

Mr Beep

My line at home has been flying for the whole week. Even last week's shaping during the day let me torrent at about 120kB/s which was enough to stream TV shows. And now this weekend I've been at a friend's house where he was having endless issues with axxess, when I logged in on my 4meg gold account here to show him what internet should be like.

He then contacted you and you helped him set up a 6meg gold account which he pays using EFT.

I just want to say thanks MrBeep from both of us. You go far beyond all other ISPs in terms of customer service and interwebs performance. Your name will be sure to ring whenever someone mentions dsl shaping around me.

You guys are awesome. (You could probably re-brand yourselves as Awesomeweb :p)

MrBeep - i'm currently on Gamer's King 4mb - thinking of Gold Leon.

My pet gripes with Gamer's King is 8-5 is largely unusable (likely coz i download like a mofo after hours and on weekends :))

Would Gold give me better http, vpn and gaming performance during the working day?

I have Uncapped Gold and between 8 and 5 it's also very unusable for me. I can't even stream a radio station.

I come here every week to complain. Openweb replaces my account and everything seems better for the first few days. Then suddenly back to ultra-shaping.

This weekend was also very up and down.

I am not sure what the Afrihost, Axxess and Mweb guys are experiencing lately but it seems like they all have the same problem.

I don't think there is a proper ISP left in this country. Telkom has become worse the past few years. Claiming they can up all the 386Kbps users to 1Mbps without hassle. What a big lie that was!

This morning we sent out a notice to clients regarding Telkoms congested exchange network.

Unfortunately, if your exchange is congested, there is not much we can do from our side.

The speed upgrades will make the Telkom situation worse.

Yes MrBeep. I blame Telkom all the way.

Thanks for the quick response.

Hi Mr Beep,

Please drop me a PM. I would be interested in what you had to discuss in your reply to curious.

Thanks
Darryl

A new way forward

I was reading a comparison of the fair use policies on the mybroadband blog/news section here.

It appears Web Africa is going the right route with penalizing heavy downloaders.

If Openweb could provide a service where heavy downloaders were penalized heavily during the day in order for most users to achieve at least 70% line/download speed I think you would be providing a "good enough" if not great service.

At this rate you're going to hemorrhage all your gold uncapped customers and they won't go to platinum because they feel that the Openweb brand is to blame for the slowdown and the Openweb platinum with its no shaping policy is quite a bit more expensive than other providers unshaped policies.

At the moment my line is running at roughly 20%(40 kb/s) of it's speed.

Nice going!

Upload is unshaped.

Hi

Was curious about the difference between Uncapped Gold Leon vs Uncapped Gold Orange vs Uncapped Gold(original)? Is there a significant difference in speeds/shaping, etc between these?

Hi Moebius, i am apparently on 8mbps Gold Uncapped Leon , and currently getting 5% of the 8mbps ... also it seems that OpenWeb doesnt even have a control over the users account, this morning Leon (their tech guy) told me i used up 40GB bandwidth yesterday and therefore they have throttled my account... btw i wasnt even home the whole day and hardly downloaded 2-3 GB in the evening...

My experience is i signed up with them a week ago, and from 1st of Nov , i have enjoyed only 1 day of good internet, the rest my account was "shaped" ...

I hope someone from their side can give us a good breakdown of what product does what and what are the rules, as well as how to manage our account usage etc..

Hello

I have replied to your PM.

The network was completely unshaped over the weekend. Any slow downs would;ve been caused by a Telkom or equipment fault.

Shaping only started again this morning at 8am.

Quick question MrBEEP,

During shaping hours, if I download a file or torrent, will my browsing be immediately unshaped the moment I close/finish the download or is there a waiting period afterwards before the browsing shaping is stopped?

I cannot stand the Webafrica throttled system.

I think Openweb has one of the better shaping systems. I know that I will be shaped during the day, and pretty much unshaped off peak. What a pleasure. Full speed all night and weekend while people on other isps suffer with their clever 24 / 7 shaping.

Think this might help. MrBeep's answer...

"The system runs a script every hour or so to check for changes. If it picks up downloads have stopped it will unshape browsing again. "

And don't forget their star system. :D
